More Americans taking drugs for mental illness »

Many more Americans have been using prescription drugs to treat mental illness since 1996, in part because of expanded insurance coverage and greater familiarity with the drugs among primary care doctors, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.They said 73 percent more adults and 50 percent more children are using drugs to treat mental illness than in 1996.

    Well yes, I believe there are 2 primary causes for this.
    1. Our "society" is built on false premises that promote mental illness. We are isolated and removed from our true nature and most peoples lives are built on the material accumulation of wealth and devoid of fulfillment in terms of human value.
    2. Belief that pharmacology will fix these bankruptcies.

    Depression being highly profitable, it is over identified.
    (Not to demean any legitimate needs of people who truly suffer from clinical depression; but way too many people are on anti depressants who very likely don't have the chemical imbalances, and are merely unhappy because of the meaninglessness of the lives they lead.
    Drugs may help their mood, but don't fix anything for them.
    However people depressed because of chemical imbalances do benefit greatly...these drugs are just over prescribed to the general public.
