My dad was a gambler, the whole family suffered in poverty for many years. My street tough brother-in-law lost a lung and will spend the rest of his life in a wheel chair, due to smoking. My sister has a Jerry Springer family all three generations due to a serious drinking problem for twenty some years.

it's all relative. if you get drunk and hit someone with your car and kill them, it's the worst. or die of liver disease. if you get lung cancer and die from cigarettes it's the worst. someone i knew gambled away their entire savings so to her it was probably the worst. you can stop gambling, you can't "stop" liver disease or lung cancer.

Truly addictive personalities change ships; from the titanic to the Lusitania. From alcohol to gambling. Being a recovering alcoholic myself since September of 1978 - over thirty years since my last drink, I quit cigarettes and before I was married (thank God) I gave up my addiction to sex. That does not mean that I gave up sex, btw.

The devastation from addiction is a family concern as its affect on them are often equally as devastating.
Addiction is a disease that centers in the mind; alcoholism, drugs, and nicotine addiction have the added component of the physical addiction.
Recovery is an inside job. Some people may stop the drinking and gambling but not recover from the inherent causes, which usually bring about a relapse.
As the old saying goes, you can sober up a horse thief; but you still have a horse thief. -

I think alcohol is the worst out of those 3, I've smoked for 30+ years and quit 13 days ago, it is hard yes, but mostly due to habit, and you can 'ween' yourself off the nicotine addiction part. You can't ween yourself off alcohol that I know of, you don't have the bad physical withdraws with the other 2 that you do with alcohol, I really can't imagine what it takes to get off alcohol if you are really an alcoholic. Gambling addiction?? well I guess it has ruined people's lives financially, and maybe relationships, but what else really? I don't want to down play anyone's true addiction, for myself tho I'd prefer to beat a gambling addiction opposed to alcohol or smoking.

I smoked.. a lot.. almost 3 1/2 packs per day.. for about 30 years.. last puff August 22, 1990 at 2:15 pm.. .. I carried a full carton and the half pack in my truck for weeks.. I didn't quit.. I'm just in between puffs...I also lost my job 5 days later.. talk about stress.. my wife smokes... and still does.. same brand I used to .. and I sometimes STILL want one.. but 1 will lead to many more I fear... I've turned down the chance to smoke some very fine Cuban cigars..
advise.. even though not ask for...
when you feel the urge for a cigarette.. . wait a half hour.. if you still want it .. well.. I never did... .. -

Alcoholism is by far the worst of the addictions. There is no weaning off it that works. Recovery is a threefold process, one must rebuildi trust, recuperate from the physical addiction, and recuperate from the mental condition, which takes years of hard work... a day at a time.
I've been blessed with many years of sobriety and freedom from addiction. I could have never done it alone. My four sons were all born during my sobriety and I am extremely grateful that my wife and children did not have to be scarred from my drinking. That is not to say that I had not hurt my brothers, parents, and others during those years of sickness, for which I have done the best to amend those injured relationships.
Nevertheless, alcoholism is a family disease and it bankrupts lives morally, financially, and spiritually. It usually becomes impossible for those affected to even understand it as a disease and not a moral issue, due to the bitterness and resentments that it spreads throughout families.
The greatest blessing that I know of is the freedom to be myself without any substance - to know what it is to get high on life and to be grateful for the love of family and friends... all those things were once impossible for me. Despite my current illness that has left me nearly crippled except for my hands and arms, I am a happy and fulfilled human being. Freedom for addiction and the thinking that causes it is a wonderful experience; it requires help from others and a hell of a lot of pain to even be willing to quit drinking for most of us.
Most alcoholics never recover and die of the disease or a related condition. Yes, out of all the addictions that I know, it is by far the worst and the best one to recover from, as well.

All three are bad. But an alcohol addiction is by far the worse. More often than not, it leads to domestic violence, child abuse, rape, HIV, STDS, drunk driving, financial problems, job loss, injuries, falls, black-outs, liver problems, fetal alcohol syndrome, and death. It is the most VIOLENT addiction of all.

I have to wonder why there aren't detox centers and rehab units for nicotine addicts? If it's true that the addiction to cigarettes is the same as or worse than heroin, why are these services offered only to Drug Addicts or Alcoholics? Maybe some smokers need more than a patch? Isn't nicotine a drug?
