The agreement, announced at the White House after House Democrats met with President Barack Obama, would offer up to $4,500 to consumers if they trade in a gas-guzzling vehicle for one with better mileage. The language follows that of a proposal supported by environment-minded lawmakers who saw the measure primarily as a way to improve fuel efficiency.

Another idea that returns money from the government to citizens while ensuring it circulates into the economy and reduces gas consumption. (As opposed to reducing taxes, which guarantees neither of those benefits.)

    Who could object to this?

This $4500 for clunkers is going to last for 1 year
With the economy the way it is, how many people are going to run out and buy a car?
How many would even qualify for a loan at this point?

Of course the new car parts dealers complained so a provision was placed in the bill that cars traded in would have to be destroyed

As the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association pointed out:
AAIA strongly opposes the use of Cash for Clunkers programs, which threaten jobs in the independent aftermarket industry by removing repair opportunities for vehicles and raising the cost of used cars and parts.

"It seems arrogant to destroy perfectly good vehicles with many more years of useful life just to entice consumers to purchase a car that they might not be able to afford," said Kathleen Schmatz, AAIA president and CEO. "This is hauntingly reminiscent to the home mortgage debacle when consumers purchased homes they could not afford."

Cash for Clunkers would prematurely destroy vehicles and their valuable parts and components, denying more affordable used vehicles and parts to millions of low and middle income families who cannot afford to purchase a new car even with a government voucher.

Something else for me to pay for. First I have to by houses for people who can't afford them. Now I have to buy cars for them. What's next? Do I have to by beer for them?
What about those of us who already bought fuel efficient cars?

        Prius
        $22,000 base price, 45mpg hybrid
        Chevy Aveo
        $12,000 base price, 30mpg gasoline
Common sense says the Aveo is a better buy yet the government gives you a tax credit for buying the Prius. Why is it a better buy? Because at $2 a gallon you could drive 150,000 miles in the Aveo before the prices equals that of the Prius. This doesn't even factor in the cost of maintenance. Three of my friends got scammed on the Prius and two other on a Civic Hybrid. Their annual cost of maintenance is twice that of my F250 Super Duty.

read the admendments to the act, probably somewhere deep in the FINE print there is a 100% tax on the grant to the consumer. maybe after the cap and trade the 4500$ will cover the 1st fill-up????
