Posted By STONERS 6 months, 3 weeks ago in Political NewsThe agreement, announced at the White House after House Democrats met with President Barack Obama, would offer up to $4,500 to consumers if they trade in a gas-guzzling vehicle for one with better mileage. The language follows that of a proposal supported by environment-minded lawmakers who saw the measure primarily as a way to improve fuel efficiency.

Not only will every little bit help, but it totally reverses the tax break people used to get for buying HUGE gas hogs for their business... it is about time someone used their head!

I know many will scream protectionism, but they could improve the bill buy giving a $3,500 break for ANY vehicle that beats 25 MPH and throw in an extra $1,000 if it happens to be an American made vehicle.
What REALLY bugs me though is the ability to make a dependable vehicle that could be counted on to routinely give at least 40 MPG was around in the 1980's. Sometimes I would drive my son's '89 Geo Metro to work and I always got at least 45 MPG! I have since bought my own Metro, but unfortunately, since my wife can't drive a stick I got the 4cyl. with auto trans. That gets me at least 30 MPG around town and 35 MPG or better on the highway... which actually seems odd since there is no overdrive gear in the auto trans models. If driving 55 MPH is supposed to save gas, then this car works backwards. I get the BEST mileage when I drive 60 - 70 MPH instead of slower. -

Another idea that returns money from the government to citizens while ensuring it circulates into the economy and reduces gas consumption. (As opposed to reducing taxes, which guarantees neither of those benefits.)

Who could object to this?-

i don't know if qualifies as an 'objection' but it should be noted that, by doing this, its front loading demand for cars so that down the road, demand will ultimately be depressed.

tadair's point is well taken too. if the industry can't make it without accounting and sales gimmicks, it puts the whole survival of the industry up for grabs.
to his credit, Obama is doing SOMETHING. i'm not sure if its anything meaningful... -

Buy an electric car if that's what you want.
Reply
You won't have to buy gas, but then you gotta buy more electricity and that price will jump up if they do the cap and trade sh!t.
You probably will need a new set of batteries after about the same amount of time as your car battery lasts. That'll be fun ... -

There is already a 10% tax credit for anybody who buys a real electric car. It's a provision of the stimulus bill you didn't like.

Now is the time to buy that GEM 100% electric car. Buy a GEM electric car
today – or any day from now in 2009 – and chances are that you’ll qualify for a 10% federal income tax credit for 2009, courtesy of the stimulus bill President Obama signed into law on Tuesday, February 17, 2009.

This $4500 for clunkers is going to last for 1 year
Reply
With the economy the way it is, how many people are going to run out and buy a car?
How many would even qualify for a loan at this point?
Of course the new car parts dealers complained so a provision was placed in the bill that cars traded in would have to be destroyed
As the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association pointed out:
AAIA strongly opposes the use of Cash for Clunkers programs, which threaten jobs in the independent aftermarket industry by removing repair opportunities for vehicles and raising the cost of used cars and parts.
"It seems arrogant to destroy perfectly good vehicles with many more years of useful life just to entice consumers to purchase a car that they might not be able to afford," said Kathleen Schmatz, AAIA president and CEO. "This is hauntingly reminiscent to the home mortgage debacle when consumers purchased homes they could not afford."
Cash for Clunkers would prematurely destroy vehicles and their valuable parts and components, denying more affordable used vehicles and parts to millions of low and middle income families who cannot afford to purchase a new car even with a government voucher.-

Something else for me to pay for. First I have to by houses for people who can't afford them. Now I have to buy cars for them. What's next? Do I have to by beer for them?

What about those of us who already bought fuel efficient cars? -

Prius
Reply
$22,000 base price, 45mpg hybrid
Chevy Aveo
$12,000 base price, 30mpg gasoline
Common sense says the Aveo is a better buy yet the government gives you a tax credit for buying the Prius. Why is it a better buy? Because at $2 a gallon you could drive 150,000 miles in the Aveo before the prices equals that of the Prius. This doesn't even factor in the cost of maintenance. Three of my friends got scammed on the Prius and two other on a Civic Hybrid. Their annual cost of maintenance is twice that of my F250 Super Duty. -
