Colin Powell/Rush Limbaugh War Rages On »
Posted By Eagle_Eye 6 months, 2 weeks ago in Political NewsIn the circular firing squad known as the Republican party, the two-man skirmish between former Secretary of State Colin Powell and GOP strategist Rush Limbaugh shows no signs of abating any time soon. Their rhetorical battle intensified yesterday, when an incensed Limbaugh told Powell he should just make it official, join "Benedict Arlen" and switch over to the Democratic Party:
"What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party."
Further taunting Powell, Limbaugh reiterated his claim that the only reason Powell voted for Obama over McCain is the president's race:
"He's just mad at me because I'm the one person in the country who had the guts to explain his endorsement of Obama. It was purely and solely based on race."
Really? The only person? Apparently Rush doesn't visit the comment section of right-leaning blogs very much. But how insulting is that remark?
To claim that one of our most decorated war heroes, a shrewd tactical general possessing a stellar intellect and a deep love for his country, is nothing more than a single-issue voter, and that the issue in question has racist implications. . .
What has Rush in such a tizzy? Well, he was reacting to remarks Powell made in a speech on Monday, in which, once again, he diagnosed one of the GOP's most-glaring problems:
"I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without."
In other words, Republicans need a new party leader.
So there's the divide. Powell says: GOP needs to dump Rush. And Rush says: Powell needs to dump the GOP. Happy times in Democrat-ville.

EE it's clear you don't know many in command. Powell was more a political officer in his later years than an actual soldier. He was a fair land commander but was never truly qualified for the later assignments to the JCGS. As for Rush, I can see point. If you break down Powell's excuse speech, it sounded more like a McCain speech then an Obama. Duty, honor loyalty. None of which covers the Presidents actual resume.

Neither man is a traitor and neither supports the downfall of our nation. I do question Powell's actions during the Gulf War. Russia didn't have the money to play the games they do now. Iran wasn't near as dangerous as they are today. It would have been a win for everyone, other than Saddam. Powell played a very powerful roll in ending the war before it began. Had we removed Saddam then, how many of our dead would be alive today. -

That Colin Powell is regarded as the "good" side of the GOP is a sad commentary on the terminal sickness of that party. In fact Powell was always a kiss-ass figurehead who put his personal gain before his integrity or his country. His career is one of the paragons of phony political advertising to cover up truth.

The Truth about Colin Powell
...false narratives about historical events can steer the American people in directions that are harmful to their interests.
But false narratives about individuals can do the same, often getting the public to trust someone who doesn’t deserve it.
There has rarely been a better example of that than the case of retired Gen. Colin Powell. Across the political spectrum, pundits encouraged the American people to trust Colin Powell.
So, no one looked very closely at the troubling reality behind his pleasant façade. Which made him the perfect choice to sell the Iraq War.
This excerpt from the new book, Neck Deep, describes the real Colin Powell, the ambitious military bureaucrat who followed orders and put his career interests first...

Buying Brand Obama
http://www.propeller.com/story/2009/05/05/buying-b...
Barack Obama is a brand. And the Obama brand is designed to make us feel good about our government while corporate overlords loot the Treasury, our elected officials continue to have their palms greased by armies of corporate lobbyists, our corporate media diverts us with gossip and trivia and our imperial wars expand in the Middle East. Brand Obama is about being happy consumers. We are entertained. We feel hopeful. We like our president. We believe he is like us. But like all branded products spun out from the manipulative world of corporate advertising, we are being duped into doing and supporting a lot of things that are not in our interest.
What, for all our faith and hope, has the Obama brand given us? His administration has spent, lent or guaranteed $12.8 trillion in taxpayer dollars to Wall Street and insolvent banks in a doomed effort to reinflate the bubble economy, a tactic that at best forestalls catastrophe and will leave us broke in a time of profound crisis. Brand Obama has allocated nearly $1 trillion in defense-related spending and the continuation of our doomed imperial projects in Iraq, where military planners now estimate that 70,000 troops will remain for the next 15 to 20 years. Brand Obama has expanded the war in Afghanistan, including the use of drones sent on cross-border bombing runs into Pakistan that have doubled the number of civilians killed over the past three months. Brand Obama has refused to ease restrictions so workers can organize and will not consider single-payer, not-for-profit health care for all Americans. And Brand Obama will not prosecute the Bush administration for war crimes, including the use of torture, and has refused to dismantle Bush’s secrecy laws or restore habeas corpus.
Brand Obama offers us an image that appears radically individualistic and new. It inoculates us from seeing that the old engines of corporate power and the vast military-industrial complex continue to plunder the country. Corporations, which control our politics, no longer produce products that are essentially different, but brands that are different. Brand Obama does not threaten the core of the corporate state any more than did Brand George W. Bush. The Bush brand collapsed. We became immune to its studied folksiness. We saw through its artifice. This is a common deflation in the world of advertising. So we have been given a new Obama brand with an exciting and faintly erotic appeal. -

That is why the party continues to sink in the muck along with Gush, Hannity,Coulter... They are sinking to their own level.

Why is Powell giving advise to a party that wants nothing to do with him. His changing parties is a joke. Like Spector the Defector, he's out for whatever he can get. He feels the GOP needs to be more left wing like he is. It's not. It's the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower and Reagan. We don't divide the nation or split our values. Slavery is wrong and we fought the Civil War. Segregation is wrong and we sent the federal troops in. Communism and fascism are wrong and our party ended the detente and defeated it once.
Reply
Like his fighting the Gulf War, you can't go only 1/2 way. You either fight to win or don't bother fighting. His advice to our party was never needed nor did we ever ask for it. At best he's a turn coat RINO at worst, his choice was over color alone. That would make him a racist. Just like the President's former minister.-

Reply
Because the advice is needed.
You divided the Republican party
the way you tried to divide the country.
And just as the country wearied of division,
so also do the republicans.
Like McCain, Powel is a soldier and a man of honor.
He was used by chicken-hawks to market a war.
Your easy dismissal of them
leaves you standing with Rush, Bush, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Will, Krystal, Krauthammer,
Feith, Perle, Rove, and Cheney.
Lincoln, Ike and Reagan would have felt more comfortable with the soldiers,
not these tin-flag-lapel-pin draft-dodgers. -

This must be a terrible time to be a right-winger. A vicious paradox has been thrust upon the once-ascendant conservatives. On the one hand they are out of power, and so must necessarily rail against the Obama administration. On the other hand they have to vilify, as dangerous anticapitalist activity, the grass-roots protests against the Geithner bailouts and the excess of companies like AIG. That leaves them with no recourse but to dream up wholesale lunacies along the lines of Glenn Beck’s recent “Fascism With a Happy Face” rants, which link the protesting “populists” and the Obama adminstration somehow and imagine them as one single nefarious, connected, ongoing effort to install a totalitarian regime.
This is not a simple rhetorical accomplishment. It requires serious mental gymnastics to describe the Obama administration — particularly the Obama administration of recent weeks, which has given away billions to Wall Street and bent over backwards to avoid nationalization and pursue a policy that preserves the private for-profit status of the bailed-out banks — as a militaristic dictatorship of anti-wealth, anti-private property forces. You have to somehow explain the Geithner/Paulson decisions to hand over trillions of taxpayer dollars to the rich bankers as the formal policy expression of progressive rage against the rich. Not easy. In order to pull off this argument, in fact, you have to grease the wheels with a lot of apocalyptic language and imagery, invoking as Beck did massive pictures of Stalin and Orwell and Mussolini (side by side with shots of Geithner, Obama and Bernanke), scenes of workers storming the Winter Palace interspersed with anti-AIG protests, etc. — and then maybe you have to add a crazy new twist, like switching from complaints of “socialism” to warnings of “fascism.” Rhetorically, this is the equivalent of trying to paint a picture by hurling huge handfuls of paint at the canvas. It’s desperate, last-ditch-ish behavior. -

Bio of OxycottonLimpballs, the messiah of the Repug party.
Reply
Political commentator, radio host, college drop-out, alleged
closet homosexual, and, as recently revealed, synthetic heroin
drug addict, Rush Hudson Limbaugh III is probably the best
known neocon personality in American radio.
Born in Cape Girardeau, MO, in 1951, Limbaugh spent many of
his formative years pursuing a career in radio.
After using his pilonidal cyst - a congenital birth defect - to
avoid military service in the Vietnam War, Limbaugh briefly
worked for radio stations in Pittsburgh, PA and Kansas City,
MO. Fired from both jobs, he worked as a wiener salesman for
the KC Royals baseball franchise, eventually slithering back into the radio business.
In mid-2004 Rush and his third wife, Marta Limbaugh,
filed for divorce. A British source has recently learned
that Marta agreed to avoid disclosing Rush's closeted
homosexuality, or penchant for child pornography, in
exchange for a hefty divorce settlement.
In 1971 Limbaugh attended Southeastern Missouri University,
where, according to reports, he had a brief but heated affair
with Elliot Sanders. So gay is Limbaugh, guarantees Sanders,
that, "none of his marriages was ever consummated."
Many of Limbaugh's fans staunchly deny the man's alleged
homosexuality, and Limbaugh himself says the rumors are
politically motivated lies. However, one is forced to doubt
Limbaugh, who has a history of denying and balking at rumors
that are later revealed to be true. His pilonidal cyst, his
pseudonymous career in Pittsburgh radio, and his addiction to
Oxycontin are all facts which Limbaugh initially denied or
concealed.-

It has been my experience that the anti-Limbaugh Republicans are either very few and far between or they are intimidated by him. Neither scenario is very healthy for the Republican party. I have frequently asked the conservatives in this forum what if anything they have ever disagreed with Limbaugh on. To date, only one has come up with an answer. Who among the left or liberals would command such total loyalty or respect? There are far more flavors or shades of Democrat than there are of Republicans. Its both a strength and a weakness. Democrats have a harder time defining their agenda and moving forward in a way that satisfies all their constituents. On the other hand, Republicans are depending on a shrinking constituency and have devoted so much time to building their narrative of their party and what it represents, they can't adjust or adapt to the changing times or demographics. They've painted themselves into a corner and anointed Rush as their messiah. Good luck with that!

My Fellow Americans: Well, facts are facts. A lot of people voted for Obama because he was Black. Everyone who voted for him thought his being Black was Historical. Rush is right as usual. American who are now unhappy with President Obama are afraid to state their opinions and the reason is because he is Black. It isn't a racial comment because he is Black. Many times I have said that President Obama was White and got ridiculed by the Liberals for saying that he was White. Who knows, we don't even know if he is an American. Although he stated that he was born in Kenya and is a Kenyan. Yet, instead of saying he is Biracial the Media insist on calling him Black. He should be offended. The fact is, he is not leading the country in the right direction. The situation gets worse more and more everyday. It is like he is in a comma and can not understand what is going on in this Country. So, if you elect someone who does not know what he or she is doing, catastrophy follows. Black or White. First of all, I agree with you on one part. Alot of people did vote for Obama because he was black, though I do not think Powell was one of them (read comments bellow.) More people voted for him because they didnt agree with McCains vision of America's future and were fed up with the direction the the last Presidentcy and the direction that the Gop has taken this country. Rush Limbaugh can not stand to have to face that fact. It is easier for him to convince himself and other that there is no actual logical reason for Powell to vote for Obama except for racial reasons. To Limbaugh and his ilk, Obama and the democracts did not legitamately defeat them. It was the media and it was racial, and it had to do with everything else beside the fact that their party doesnt represent the majority of America anymore.

Good one Rush. In a time when everyone in your party is looking for fresh new ideas to recruit more people for future elections, you want to devide the party even more by excluding those that happen to think that the party should move in a different direction than you. It probally kills you that Powell is probally right about his criticism of the GOP. That is exactly what the GOP needs is real criticism of itself from within itself. But it is easier for you to exclaim that Powell side with Obama for racial reason because to do otherwise would force Rush to see that he is one of the anchors dragging the Republican party down in the dirt.

The Left is the ONLY friend our American Soldiers have ... although I give you credit for repeating Rush's talking points so well.

BTW ... did you know Rush begged to get OUT of service to his nation by claiming he had a cyst on his ANUS? How ironic can you get.
But look - I know you HAVE to preach your hatred against the Left ... but you are conveniently overlooking these FACTS.
1) Modern Republicans have been working to gut the GI Bill for decades - in spite of the fact that it's been proven to be a fantastic program.
2) The Modern Republicans voted AGAINST a one-time bonus promoted by Democrats for soldiers fighting in Iraq - to compensate them for those Extended Tours.
3) The Modern Republicans voted to CUT IN HALF ... funding for Head Trauma Centers for soldiers and veterans - this, at a time when Head Trauma injuries were rising due to IED's.
4) The Modern Republicans did NOTHING as Walter Reed Hospital ... in WASHINGTON DC was collapsing around our wounded soldiers. Now I will allow that I don't think this was due to the STANDARD Disrespect that Republicans give our Soldiers ... I think it's symptomatic of their INCOMPETENCE.
5) Bush offered the LOWEST Cost of Living Increase in nearly 20 years ... this, during a time when he was demanding extended tours of ALL Soldiers serving in Iraq.
6) During the Bush Administration, it was discovered that a large portion of military barracks across the nation were decrepit hell holes - with extensive mold, and electrical problems - some soldiers had been electrocuted.
7) Did I mention that Republicans have been trying to GUT the GI Bill ... including John McCain?
Look, I realize you don't care about these facts . . . I know you only care about saying things that validate your hatred of the Left . . . but I must tell you that your disrespect of Colin Powell defines you CLEARLY . . . as one who simply DOES NOT CARE about our Soldiers.
You're that kind of American who only feels patriotism when we invade another country ... or you watch the Military Channel.
Your kind of patriotism is the weakest link in our national defense.
Basically, I believe you to be the classic Modern Right Wing Whiner - who has nothing positive to say about America ... but only thrives on spewing hatred towards our nation.
.
America would be MUCH better off if YOU left ... and patriotic Americans could then say ... don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out ... to LaLa Loony Land.

Just think ... GW and his partners COULD have built the stadium themselves ... they certainly had the money ... well ... not GW ... he didn't have ANYTHING ... cept his daddy's name.
But these guys said ... "Why should WE invest OUR money ... let's get the city to raise taxes ... let THEM build the stadium FOR us! Cause ... after all ... we are SOCIALISTS. Capitalists would take the risk themselves.
Not only that, my poor Ditto-Head ... George W then got the city of Arlington to STEAL 200 acres from good citizens of Arlington to have a place to build that stadium.
How'd he do it?
LOL ... Like ALL good Socialists ... he got the City of Arlington to declare Eminent Domain! And he stole the land right out from under these tax paying citizens.
Some fought GW ... sure ... like the Curtis Mathes family ... who had a pretty nice home. But hey ... you can't fight the Right Wing Socialists in Texas!
