How is Powell a Patriot when he lied to us about WMD's and got us into the War in Iraq? I'm just curious about that because the only thing I see that he has done for you Libs. is back Obama. So if he lied to us and got us into a war he is Baaadddddd(sheep tone). But if he now backs Obama he is Gooooodddddd.....????
Reply
What if Bush comes out and backs Obama? You going to support him too? What about all the black Democrat's who called Powell an Oreo because he acts like too much of a white person and he was a Republican? All that goes away because now he backs Obama?
Naive to say the least. -

"'Not as right as others would like'
Powell, who was secretary of state under President George W. Bush and held the nation's top military post under President George H.W. Bush, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president last year. Nonetheless, since the election he has described himself as a Republican and a right-of-center conservative, though "not as right as others would like."
Cheney, citing Powell's backing of Obama over Republican nominee John McCain, said, "I assumed that that is some indication of his loyalty and his interests."
Cheney's remarks on CBS' "Face the Nation" were the latest step in his slow-motion estrangement from Powell since the two worked closely together to manage the Persian Gulf war in 1991 — Powell as the Army general who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Cheney as defense secretary for the elder Bush.
Under the younger Bush, Powell initially backed action against Iraq's Saddam Hussein and delivered a famous U.N. speech laying out the U.S. case. But Powell and Cheney increasingly parted ways over the Bush administration's policies on the war and terrorism, with Cheney usually prevailing. Powell left the administration after Bush's first term."
There is no room for anyone except extreme right wing racists in the party now, Cheney has been an idiot coward for years. So of course he would back another racist idiot coward.
Gush Limberger,Cheney,GW Bush all cowards, who let someone else fight the wars so they can turn a profit.
Colin Powell, a man who has fought for his country and espouses patriotism over party politics.
Who is the real Republican ? Powell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who are the real losers everyone who allows the Gush bags to set policy.
Take Cheney and try him for war crimes against humanity, hang the bastard if he is found guilty. Just like they did the German leaders of WWII. -

Colin Powell is no more a patriot or a Republican than Arlen Spector is a Democrat or a Republican. Colin Powell went with whatever was most expedient for his personal benefit, just as Spector did. I believe those who voted for Obama found the bottom. They swished around in the muck of Chicago politicians, and found Obama. Even those of you on the Left have to smirk when Powell professes to be politically right of center, and supports Obama.

If the republican party keeps pushing modertes out it will secure the future of the democrates in office. The party continues to narrow its base when it should be looking for ways to expand it. I wonder if they will become as marginal as the green party?

On one hand, you have Colin Powell, a highly decorated 35-year veteran of three wars, four-star general, and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
On the other hand, you have Dick Cheney--a loony old chickenhawk who created as close to a dictatorship we ever had in this country--and Rush Limbaugh, who avoided the military by claiming to have some sort of painful anal cyst.
And you claim Powell is the one with the "big yellow stripe" on his back.
It's obvious that service to one's country doesn't gain your respect.
You are an excellent example of what the author of this story talks about:

Some of what appears to me to be the GOP's problem is demonstrated by comments from propeller's obtuse. The very idea that someone is a traitor, or disloyal because they disagree with their party is self defeating. I've known Specter ever since his bid for Phila. D.A. and the guy has simply voted his conscience and voted with his constituents in mind. He was a democrat then he was a republican now he's a democrat again, his voting pattern will not change regardless of which party bribes...er I mean finances him. I don't care for all his votes or positions but the man IS independent and he votes for his constituents wishes. (Imagine PA. coal miners going for corporate tax holidays...no they'd have his head for breakfast.)

I think the VP brought up a very valid point when said he didn't think Colostomy Powell was still a member of of the GOP. Powell who claimed to be a Reagan Republican that turned into a left winger, I mean "moderate" didn't back McCain. A left wing moderate. No, he backed the left wing communist or socialist. So why the change in Powell's stand? Was it because of something Obama did? Who knows, his resume is about as think as tissue paper. Was it because of his promises? Hope and Change are bumper stickers, hardly a campaign with any substance. Was it Obama's support of the troops, not at all. He wants to create a second military under the "civilian" control, just like the SS or KGB. So why would Powell support Obama. Race is the only one not mentioned. It's skirted by everyone. But I think his support was based on skin color. It's a good thing race isn't important.....

It gets better ... the Party who CLAIMS to disdain "Big Government" ... actually INCREASED the size of the Government Bureaucracy by as much as 30% during the past 8 years.
I'm not sure that the issue is the Modern Republican Party moving FURTHER to the Right ... I think the problem here is the Modern Republican Party moving into a Plane Incomprehensible Cross Purposes.
... • Their 'Moral Center' has been so besmirched by ideological perverts ... they have people like BB64 ... (a flag waving pro-spending militarist) ... denigrating an actual solider who rose through the ranks to become aGENERAL ... and PRAISING a couple of Draft Dodgers!
NOW do y'all see what I've been trying to explain?

i still don't understand how so many democrats were duped into believing colin powell is a "patriot," for merely endorsing obama (after it was clear he was going to win, anyway.) i mean, is that all it takes to seperate him from the rest of the neocons? somebody explain to me how powell is any less guilty than rumsfeld and the rest of the gang for selling the war? this whole dialogue is painful to read. what is wrong with our attention spans? we are getting played like a fiddle.

There's always a risk at being duped by politicians.
Reply
Now, I'm not of the frame of mind that believes that all politicians are lying scum.
I personally believe there are FIVE types of politicians.
1) The Lying Scum ... yes, there IS a small percentage - just as there are in ANY business and/or church.
2) The Religion Driven ... as I describe in my Profile, this is a modern invention. A person of narrow interpretation of the Bible that feels a calling to FORCE all others to adhere to THEIR interpretation of the world.
3) The "America as Corporation' type... often drawn to politics from the Corporate sector after having been introduced to the 'quid pro quo' - exchanges common between Corporations and Government. This type also believes that America should be a Military, Warrior Corporation.
4) The "I Hate Government" type. They get pi$$ed off at everything government does. They have this idea that government is ALWAYS inefficient ... and that BIG BUSINESS is ALWAYS the answer.
5) The 'Don Quixote' type. They've seen a great deal of social injustice, inequity, and disregard for every day Americans, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters ... and they enter politics to to make a positive difference in people's lives.
-------------------
. ❝I consider this ranking to be a hierarchy. Those with the LEAST ethics rank a lower number and those with the HIGHEST ethics rank a higher number. This Ethical formula is calculated by a complex algorithm that I cannot divulge here.❞ .
--------------------
I allot my trust based on the cumulative value of the category where I place them.
Having followed Colin Powell's career for quite some time, I have always considered him to be from category 5. Selfless military service, Bravery in Action, Esteemed by his Peers, Leadership, Command, Effectiveness.
I then consider those who supplied Colin Powell with the 'Talking Points' with which to give his speech at the UN.
A few from category 3. A couple from category 2. And, sad to say ... maybe one or two from category 1.
So, I've calculated a preference of belief for Colin Powell.
Have I been duped?
Maybe, but my calculations say otherwise.

Powell's military service was largely very distinguished, I have no criticism, but a few questions about Mei Lai ...other than that he expressed interest in ideas that seemed quite contrary to Cheney and that crowd especially in foreign policy ...(I can't imagine why he went to work for them). No I don't blame him for the policies of the Bush white house, he did the honorable thing, he left, he didn't criticize them at all when he left until their reign was de facto over anyway.
Reply
He's right of center, more militaristic than I like, but far less so than the chickenhawks that dominated the Bush adm. And intellectually as well as in social skills, he outclasses Cheney by a mile, Rush by a light year. Another case where I think, at least speaking for myself, I have a reasonable degree of respect for the man not particularly his politics. Though his politics are more palatable than the majority of the GOP's spokesmen. Trying to think of a contemporary Republican I admired...Chuck Hagel, I liked him very much actually. Tom Kean had some appeal but that's going back a bit...his son sadly is nowhere near as likable, his best political capital is his name. I have no respect for Limbaugh or Cheney, for different reasons, history has proven Cheney's ideas especially about the military and privatization of aspects of it were terrible. Rush has never made me laugh, or engaged me as an entertainer, and his political views are simply deplorable in most cases.

Something goofy about this rating system. If a post has a negative rating, and you rate it positive, it increases the negative. If a post has a positive, and you rate it with a negative, it correctly reduces the positive number. What's up?

My Fellow Americans: Why shouldn't Cheney back Limbaugh after all Powell is the traitor. A White Sheep in Black Clothing. He supported the Damocrats while he was supposed to be a Republican. Powell was showing his true Colors. Pretty obvious to see who was stabbing Bush and Cheney in the back while he was pretending to be on their side. On the Side of the American People. What a low life. How can he live with himself. I hope his family is proud of him. Cheney deserves a medal for telling the truth, which is unusual for a Polititian. The Damocrats should take a lesson from a real Patriot like Cheney and maybe some of the dignity would come back into the political arena. Powell guys like him are your heros and guys like Cheney you put down. You should thank God, if you believe in him, that there are still honest, respectable, and Patriotic individuals around like Cheney. Thank You God! The Real American

One thing I am puzzled why the Republicans have not learned. On the Democratic side, we had our turncoat in Joe Lieberman who endorsed John McCain over Obama. Lieberman even made a speech at the Republican convention.
Reply
Many Democrats, including myself were furious at Lieberman for his betrayal. Yet Obama counselled the party stalwarts to calm down and NOT expel Lieberman from the party and from his committee posts.
The end result - Lieberman is now back in the Democratic fold and a small but necessary part of the 60 vote majority to prevent Republican filibusters. The cooler heads, led by Obama, prevailed and it proved to be the right decision.
The Republicans should have learned from that incident. But they expelled Arlen Specter and now Colin Powell.
They insist on ideological purity with absolutely no leeway for any deviation or free thinking. They eat their young. They shoot themselves in the foot. They proclaim ideological victories and calmly accept political defeat. They drift further and further into the netherworld of radical neoconservatism. They risk condemning themselves into political irrelevancy for the next generation (or 2).
Why?
