Senate Considers Federal Tax On Soda »
Posted By TimALoftis 6 months, 1 week ago in Health & FitnessThe Senate Finance Committee today is hearing proposals on how to pay for President Obama's proposed universal health care plan, which is expected to cost more than $1 trillion. Among the proposals, as Consumer Affairs reports: A three-cent tax on sodas as well as other sugary drinks, including energy and sports drinks like Gatorade. Diet sodas would be exempt.
"While many factors promote weight gain, soft drinks are the only food or beverage that has been shown to increase the risk of overweight and obesity, which, in turn, increase the risk of diabetes, stroke, and many other health problems," Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is pushing the idea, said in his testimony. "Soft drinks are nutritionally worthless…[and] are directly related to weight gain, partly because beverages are more conducive to weight gain than solid foods."

You are kidding right!! Look out ,taxing the air you breath will be next. Thank you all of you Obama supporters!!! Gatorade isn't soda, this could include chocolate milk, fruit juices, it will include sports bars, diet bars and h*ll spaghetti sauce has a little sugar in it. We tried to turn food into fuel, that worked real well, now food with any type of sweetener will go up too. You got exactly what you asked for!! Higher taxes, more govt. control of YOUR life!!

There is the liberal tax and spend idea. It will hit the poorest hardest like the rest of the sin taxes. Why do the liberals hate the poor?
Reply
The 1 cent tax would raise $1.5 billion if the $1 trillion. Is the rest going to be a deficit? This is nonsense. -

Actually, borrow and spend is worse than tax and spend. Tax and spend is an attempt to balance the payables with appropriate receivables.
Reply
Of course, that is like comparing two different types of murder to determine which one is best.
What you have now demonstrated is the neither party is capable of running a fiscally responsible government. So, which candidate are you going to vote for in 2012? If it is associated with the colors red or blue, you are part of the problem.-

The problem with tax and spend is that they never tax the amount of the spend but when the deficit blossoms so big the say they have to tax more. Then the problem of the Laffer curve comes into play. Taxes go up and the tax revenue goes down. That is why every time they lower taxes the tax revenue goes up.
Reply
The Republicans about a decade ago sent a question to the CBO asking what they would get if they taxed at a rate of 100%. They were given a huge number that they laughed at. What would yo do if the government took 100% of your pay? What the CBO didn't think about was the fact that if people do not get any money for working they will cease to work for money and go to a barter system.

So comrade we have seen that your gps shows that you didn't put in your mandatory 26 miles of running last week, we will fine you 1,500 dollars, if you continue to fail to eat from 'voluntary' mandated substantiate list and complete your mandated exercise goals, we will have no choice but to remove you from the health benefits program. After all, it's for the good of the nation that you don't become a health burden.
On a second note comrade, this is also a reminder that the Logan's Run Health Care Cost Reduction Bill was passed in 2012, your 62 birthday will be next May 12th. Do not fail to arrive to the nearest carousel center by 9am on that date to perform your ultimate patriotic duty, before you become a burden of the state.
Thank you for your service of your youth and helping making this country a one that glorifies personal freedom.-

I appreciate the slippery slope argument. I expect you to use it in all arguments where the government can potentially determine choices made by the citizenry.
Reply
Ironically, I am not subject to any of these taxes, so a citizen can chose to not be taxed.

What the foot??? Are you kidding me? Who decides what get taxed and what does not? Chances are, the folks drinking Gatorade are in much better shape than the 400lb chick in line at the Golden Corral buffet eating six plates of grease and chugging diet coke. This is what you get America.

"They couldn't care less about the health risks."
Reply
Seems to me they're the only people concerned about actual health issues. As opposed to the GOP who thinks everyone can afford health insurance on their own dime. Because everyone makes over 250k a year, right? Everyone that supports them, anyhow. Well. We can count those with an IQ under 90, too I suppose.

Soft drinks are probably as bad for you as cigarettes, so if they tax sodas, they will be doing some people a huge favor. My sister will not drink water until she is completely dehydrated, in the hospital and near death.. She drinks soft drinks constantly. Maybe she would drink some water if this were to happen.

""Soft drinks are probably as bad for you as cigarettes""?????
Reply
For some that may well be, BUT not for all.
I don't have any weight problem. I drink soft drinks. Doctors cant find a darn thing wrong with me other than my joints are worn out (very active life) and I am getting old.
It's not solely the number of calories ones takes in which causes obesity. -

Dont you think it a bit different
Reply
Smoking effects anyone which does it in 1 negative way or another.( I still think it should be your choice)
Sodas on the other hand have a negitive effect on those which (mostly by choice) were going to have a problem one way or another due to their lack of activity.
Many already and as science explores the effects further, more are finding that the effects of artificial sweeteners are not as healthy as once thought.
Personally I will stick with sugar, Real butter too.

How do you think this country is going to be pulled out of the abyss W threw us into??? Republicans, do you think you deserve a free ride for the rest of your lives?? That's the way you act! NOW, if you hate your country so badly that you don't want to be taxed and have to pay the price to live here, there's planes and boats leaving the shores of the U.S.A. everyday.. Feel Free!

to Not2needy,I am an independant, and certainly do not get a free ride, but for you to say it is unpatriotic to be upset with excessive taxation is moronic. Who are you to tell someone to leave because they disagree with a proposed tax? On what grounds is it justifiable to tax soft drinks, theyre bad for you? What a bunch of crap, I dont make very much money and like to smoke cigarettes and drink soft drinks and dont think I should be penalized for doing so. Pay the price to live here? What in the hell are you talking about , I already pay far more in taxes than I recieve in public services, and am paying into social security that I wont even have when it comes time to retire.

You better not linger,I'm seventy five, and I believe SS age will be raised to seventy before you can take it,I will also bet that the cut off age for major medical procedures will range between sixty five, and seventy.Remember SS was designed for a small number of citizens. The life expectancy was sixty two at it's inception.

What happened to Obama's promise to only raise taxes on anyone making over $250,000/year?
Reply
Taxing soda, chips etc is extremely regressive
And remember what Pelosi promised:
Pelosi's high-priority commitment to restore “pay-go” rules — the policy that any new spending or tax cuts must be offset by similar cuts in spending. -

My Fellow Americans: A Tax on Soda. Whooooo! I though it was going to be on Beer, Wine, and Hard Liquor. I'm so relieved. Let me tell you about the scam Coke pulled off on the American people in the 80's. Sugar was expensive back then so Coke decided it had to change it's formula to cut cost. They decided to eliminate sugar from their formula but they were faced with the problem of getting the people to go along with it so they came up with this scheme. They decided to advertise that they were changing their formula to compete with Pepsi. So, they cooked up the idea of putting more sugar into a special batch of Coke knowing the people would not like it and would want the old formula back. They called this Batch New Coke. Guess What? The people hated it and Coke got stormed with lots of critical mail. So, the Coke Brain Trust sat back and then after a couple of weeks reported that they would keep the New Coke but would also go back to the Original Formula. Now, the Original Formula actually had an artificial sweetener in it to replace the sugar it once contained. Nobody notice because they were so busy enjoying the original formula that they did not realize the sugar had actually been replaced with the new sweetener. Coke Brain Trust pulled off the greatest Scam in the History of the New World. Now, they are going back to putting sugar in one of their present formulas even stating that they are going back to sugar. I'm pretty sure the American People never realized they had quit putting sugar in their formula at all. Clever People. I thought I'd lighten up on my friends for a change. The Real American

A soda tax? What will those jerks think of next? Every time they think up a sin tax, bad things happen. In fact, the original sin tax was the Whiskey Tax, thought up by Alexander Hamilton. It led to the Whiskey Rebellion. The joke here is kind of broad - the American Revolution was cooked up by the richest third of the colonies, the merchant, land owning aristocratic class, because they didn't want to pay British taxes. So, the Revolution happened - granted, the ideals that they based it on are amongst the most noble of human ideas - but, they came up with this new country, and in order to pay for the war that 2/3 of the nation didn't want anything to do with, they taxed the thing that people used as a trade commodity by people that didn't have large amounts of gold or silver coin - whiskey!

At any rate, the idea of a sugar tax is ridiculous. The government is trying to basically say that all this sugar is bad for us, and we should tax it to give us all an incentive to be healthier. It isn't about it at all, rest assured. A sugar tax is only about one thing, and that is, and always has been for the government to get more money. That's it, that's all it has been. How much is enough to satisfy their greed, Democrat and Republican? Both parties have spent enough, it's about high time we start voting in some people that don't want to spend more, and if you look at the track record up to this point, most government spending is grossly inefficient. For instance, they allocated $3 million to redesign the Homeland Security logo - that should 20 minutes on Photoshop, not several years and millions of dollars. Do we really want these people to have that much more money of ours?
