When Dublin university student Shane Fitzgerald posted a poetic but phony quote on Wikipedia, he said he was testing how our globalized, increasingly Internet-dependent media was upholding accuracy and accountability in an age of instant news.

This is why I never use Wikipedia for anything other than benign information, and anything I do find that I want to rely on as fact I verify it before I ever repeat it to anyone.

Kind of like how the AP blew that whole EPA story the other day.

I think we should differentiate between credible news sources being lazy on getting stories factually correct and 'fishy' news items being purposefully put out by biased sources. A good example is an item posted on LiveLeak today. It purports to be about a Missouri woman calling a radio show 'live' and telling about the county sheriff getting ready to forcefully evict her from a home she had proof of owning free and clear. Halfway through this 'live' interview the conversation turns to a condemnation of 'Obama's government' costing jobs and how he's in league with banks throwing innocent people out of their homes. I thought there had to be more about this so I researched and could find nothing about it in any of the Missouri papers or major news outlets, INCLUDING Fox News. The only two sources that had anything about it were a web site called USMessageBoard.com and GCN. Turns out the web site champions anything right wing and GCN was a hardcore conservative radio station. You would be surprised at the number of comments condemning Obama for letting this happen. They blindly excepted this has completely true without researching it.

Nothing new here. In the 20's a journalist wrote a fake story for an April Fools joke. It has been passed along as real to the present time.
