White House Czar Calls for End to 'War on Drugs' »

Posted By myfairlady 7 months ago in Political News

The Obama administration's new drug czar says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting "a war on drugs," a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use.

In his first interview since being confirmed to head the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske said Wednesday the bellicose analogy was a barrier to dealing with the nation's drug issues.

"Regardless of how you try to explain to people it's a 'war on drugs' or a 'war on a product,' people see a war as a war on them," he said. "We're not at war with people in this country."

Drugs are legal in Amsterdam and Illegal in New York. Which city would you want to walk down a dark alley in?

Its about freaking time. There are teenagers spending 30 years in jail for selling LSD at Fish concerts, more time than murderers or rapists.

If marijuana was harder to grow, it would be legal, because Cindy McCain and the cons would be selling it for billions, but because cons cant make a profit, its illegal. Not like boos, which right wing zionist Billionaires like Segrams, who also a big chunk of hollywood american media, make their nut. Funny how prohibition didn't work for boos, but its just fine for pot. 60,000 murders last year over Coke and pot. Vietnam numbers each year, but the evangelical cons think its evil, so lets just keep throwing lives and treasure away to support the evangelical superstitions. Praise the baby jesus.

"Mr. Kerlikowske's comments are a signal that the Obama administration is set to follow a more moderate -- and likely more controversial -- stance on the nation's drug problems." Good.

The just say no wasn't working either. All of the classes in the anti drug movement high school just taught the kids how to get it easier.
Maybe if the government made heroin dealers terrorists because that is where the money goes to (fund).
Marijuana could be legalized, help out the budget and aid in fighting terrorists.
Legalize LSD for use in giving terrorist prisoners a new look on life.
Of course this is totally out there but not impossible in the future of 100 years down the road.

So many are focused on drugs being a problem in and of themselves. But this is really only true if they cause other problems. (It's kinda like calling guns a problem - only true when they are used violently.) So, if we get a civil freedoms idea behind it, and realize that any material object is not a problem in and of itself, we can start to properly analyze whether the war on drugs is worthwhile, whether prohibition is merited.

The article mentions Seattle's failure because they had an open-air drug market in the downtown core. This is a failure only because of the assumption that drugs are bad (mmkay?). To really understand what such a market means, you have to look at what effects it had. Did it increase or reduce drug violence? Drug dependancy? Drug-related theft?

It's possibly that it may have increased the 2nd... but an open, safe place to conduct drug transactions would bring down their cost (reducing related theft) and also bring down related violence - at least at the point of sale.

opium is actually a useful tool for discussion.

heroin is a horrific drug that destroys lives.
morphine and oxtcotin are useful pharmaceudicals that help doctor's treat patients.

AIDs, Cancer, and Epilepsy patients could all benefit from medical marijuana yet proper studies can't be done in America due to federal law... which is just stupid because it only hurts our people.
