Posted By IsraGeek 5 months, 3 weeks ago in Science & Technology

BrightSource and PG&E have agreed to terms that will make it the largest ever solar energy deal. The deal will provide 1,310 megawatts of electricity, which equals the amount necessary to power 530,000 California homes during peak hours in the summer.

Don't rejoice yet the environmentalists are filing lawsuits as I type. They say all those acres of solar panels in the desert will harm the environment of the desert.

Reinvigorated innovation of alternative energy sources is good news. Hope this continues and becomes the trend.

At last there seems to be some large projects, concerning renewable energy.California,Texas and Israel, have large solar projects underway. In my country, the UK there are plans for the World's largest wind farm.Maybe there's hope yet!!

The tower would be surrounded by a 25,000-acre, transparent circular skirt of greenhouse panels, which would warm the air trapped underneath to about 95 degrees Fahrenheit above the ambient temperature. The cool air at the top of the 400-feet-in-diameter tower would then draw the hot air up from ground level at a speed of roughly 35 miles per hour, which in turn would drive the 32 turbines around the bottom half of the tower. The turbines provide around 200 megawatts of electricity.

I believe I saw a model of this technology in one of this years issues of Scientific American. In that issue other types of solar power facilities were noted.

I liked the Spanish model best. It is proven, in place for a few years, and has a very low cost per KwHr. I believe that in that model the estimation is that 90 of the Spanish facilities could power all the homes in the United States. I'm writing all this from memory, but I am under the impression that the "Wind" caused by differential in thermal gradients is really an experimental model. I know that Spain is gearing up to build some more facilities based on their working concept.
What technology does our scientific community have sequestered back for a profitable day to release them?

By the way who would own the towers? Is the contract to supply electricity or sell the technology in working facilities?

It is amazing to me that Exxon is not the number one proponent (in terms of dollars) of alternative energy.

I agree with some of the major Exxon Share holders (e.g. Rockefellers) that want Exxon to look to the future, not the past.

Since my last comment didn't show up, I'll make this short.

I believe Geo-Thermal and Tidal energy should be more available and low cost than any other source in California.
