Propeller Week In Review: May 15, 2009 »
Posted By JamesMarcus 7 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsNot for the first time, Rush Limbaugh occupied center stage at Propeller over the last week. Quite a few members agreed with PsychoHosebeast's characterization of the radio commentator as a "consummate Ugly American." But he had his defenders as well, such as Hhussk, who suggested that Limbaugh was correct in labeling Obama's tax plans as "socialist policies."
Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi was in hot water for assenting to earlier torture policies, and she got a resounding thumbs down from the Propeller community. Spadecaller branded her an "opportunist," while BB64 stuck to the more partisan "perfect Democrat."
There were also lively stories about the "soda tax" and Crosby, Still, and Nash. Come on down, read the post, and join the post-WIR conversation!

The week began, of course, with extensive coverage of BilboBaggins 111th birthday party; invites sent to all in Propeller.
Reply
The comment "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." got a mix of negs and pos's.
The expected fireworks between Gandalf and SackvillePatriot covered the usual topics of property rights.
In a music thread, Frodo offered his version of the classic, "The Inkeeper's Cat", beginning an amusing interchange cut short when he disapeared.
In tech discusion, Saruman posted for
review "Why the Great Ring will never be found so stop looking for it NOW". Long-time propeller poster Sauron replied: "One Ring to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them, poser" .
The war between dark and light ground on, as did its discussion, with Aragorn suggesting that
a return to monarchy might improve matters. "Over my dead body", replied Denethor .
An increased immigration of Orcs, goblins, nazgul and
walking trees was discussed by treebeard ,
Grishnak and BigWraithe . This comment by the latter: "Shut up or I will not slay thee in thy turn, but bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, where thy flesh shall be stripped away and your mind left naked before the lidless eye." drew criticism for being hostile.
In a lighter note, poster Smeagol
offered this observation about fishing -

At the risk of cross-promotion, of note is this week's capsule of the chattering class on TV and radio:

James, with all due respect, I have to say I'm often thunderstruck by your decision making vis a vis WIR. I understand that you feel obliged to quote from all sides of the political spectrum. I even get that you may want to pay special attention to those perspectives which are right of center (because they are in the minority here). But I fail to see what value there is to quoting some of these *same* people who repeatedly post...there's no nice way to put this...utter HORSECRAP. It seems like you're rewarding people for simply posting. Sure, it's a good idea for us all to know that there are really ignorant people in our midst but why encourage posters who aren't offering any commentary of demonstrable substance by quoting them repeatedly--and quoting some of their most inane and unremarkable comments?
Reply
Before anyone bothers to neg me or accuse me of sour grapes, I've been quoted in WIR and I think the blog is a great idea. But I don't live to see my name up in lights and I don't screech and cry because someone negs me or calls me offensive names (boo hoo...some people here need to calm down about how many "negs" or "pos" you get). I just think seeing the same completely unremarkable comments by the same people repeatedly has started to make this feature unreadable. IOW, I don't care that I'm not quoted but to see comments from troglodytes here routinely...OMG...my acid reflux...I need to go for a bike ride. ;-(-

James has the toughest job on the block and one aspect of it is that the way that you put the issue here pretty much leaves him lacking an opening for response.

Would it ever be possible to keep everyone on propeller happy and feeling that they're being nurtured all the time? Isn't it essential that as many people as possible do feel that they have some kind of relationship to this very extended family - whether we individually like them a lot and think that they have the wisdom of Solomon or whether we grind our teeth in rage and frustration at their every utterance and know that Hell's too good for them 'cos it will keep them warm.
Inclusivity is not a strong point of US culture. :People tend to hang together with their own kind far more than they do in many places in Europe, for example. There are a few people with whom I have quite savage disagreements on propeller that I know that I would actually find very interesting in real-life. I regret not making that more clear sometimes.
Drawing straight lines in the sand is never going to work on an internet forum and while I often am not particularly excited by some mentions I do believe that James does a great job of drawing those lines for us - in the full knowledge that the waves will be washing them away in a few hours from the consciousness of all but the archivists amongst us.
Please note that this is an unsolicited commercial! -

Meanwhile--you're allowed to gripe about my editorial judgment. Fire away. But as I may have explained before, I select the articles for the WIR based on what got the most props or comments during the last week (which is a Thursday-to-Thursday cycle). Since a brace of Limbaugh stories generated tons of both, I featured them. What I think of Limbaugh isn't the point. You're right that I try to give some sense of the back-and-forth, even if that means that every comment is not a rhetorical gem. I think the WIR would be less interesting in general if I simply strung together comments affirming the same point of view.
Gama, your check is in the mail.

good work James Marcus, once again you done me proud. I have fun this week i kinda like to argue a little bit. and since they only a couple of women from the right , (RedRiver, klarissa, cactus Annie) on here that I would consider sexually harassing , which I won't mind you. All I'm left with is a extreme left homosexuals and extreme left ugly women. I just figure I would just argue. LOL And I want to report these people whom I will not name for calling me racist , sexist. I am not racist.

(I am not particularly interested in knowing that ranch's ass is white - or so he says it is. Perhaps if it was chartreuse, it might be considered a conversation piece. Nevertheless, I would not tend to mix well with those who would even care to know the color of his ass.)

Why am I not surprised that this WIR omitted reviewing the article "A Revisionist’s Terms of Use at Propeller.Com" that was posted on Wednesday and tallied over 300 comments from the community?
It is certainly not the recognition that drives me to pose that question. God forbid we should face some serious problems as a community. Well, this will be enough for me and my soap box. It is plain to me; this Jew has overstayed his welcome here.
To set the record straight one last time, no one individual or group of Propeller’s resident Anti-Semites “ran me off” from continuing my participation here - contrary to popular opinion. Rest assured, I will be mixing it up with others -friend and foe, wherever I go.
As long as the harassment, intimidation, and abasement of individuals or groups on the basis of one’s religion, race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or disability, is routinely ignored, I cannot in good faith support this site as I had in the past.
There was a time that conduct of that nature would no be tolerated.
I hope this issue is eventually addressed without all the excuses, contradictions, and empty apologies - because it is important.
I will keep in touch with many of you. So, good luck.-

No, Spade, don't let the B@stard little trolls win! It would be a great loss to the "majority" of the Propeller community, several meaningless trolls should not be allowed to bully people away. You know they are doing it on purpose because they can get you riled up and cause pain, it is their pass time to create KAOS within, don't let it drag you down and out.
Reply
As a whole community we can deal with them by just blocking them, never respond to them and dropping the stories we don't like. But if you leave, then they will have gotten what they want and the majority of the Propeller community loses because we really enjoy the wonderful videos and commentary you post and participate here. -

--That one took me by surprise also, SC. My thinking is that it's not as if there won't be plenty of opportunities to give Limbaugh more publicity (as he is in the business of drawing attention to himself). I was filled with venom in your story thread but there were a lot of thoughtful posts from others (including yours) so I'm scratching my head over that omission.

Spade, he's not talking about his posterior--he's talking about his donkey. But let me address your comment, which I was sad to read. Your post about the Propeller TOU was not included because as of noon on Thursday, when I got the WIR data, it had accumulated 80 comments--considerably less than most of the stories that made the cut. Most likely it will be included next week, given the conversation it has generated since then. If you won't be here, that is a real pity. I hope you'll reconsider and return, but respect your decision in any case.

To bad he doesn't have a white cat, so we can call him something even more suitable.
The "real pity" is that you never responded to my last message nor did you follow up on your revised opinion; apparently that will remain between you and me.
On Wednesday, anyone could tell that the story was generating a lot of interest; and it was your choice not to cover it. Period. I'm assuming that you really want to review what is really happening on this site. Am I mistaken?
And that's certainly your prerogative; but let's stop pretending. (I'm really not that dumb.)
I do not think your defense and dismissal of conduct that you admit violates the TOU sets a very good precedent.
If it is strictly because you are short staffed and that you haven't had a chance to get around to it, I apologize for not being aware of that until recently. I do hope that you will get around to it before more members pack it in also, as I know that I have received a number of complaints regarding personal attacks against others on the basis of their race, nationality and gender. You may have already received those complaints too. Too bad some members leave without mentioning a word about their reasons.
I've been a committed member of Propeller and Netscape for a long time and would like to continue that, should you and Tom choose to uphold the guidelines of conduct as you always had, I could continue knowing that I am not associating with an organization that enables antisemitic conduct and personal attacks that harass and intimidate its targeted members.-

Let's call a spade a spade. You, spadecaller, have inflicted more vicious and personal attacks on other members than anyone in the history of Netscape and propeller. You are the main violator of the Terms of Use, but yet your are always going on about how mean other people are to you. You are the mean one. Your constant narcissistic whining always comes after you attack someone and you are thwarted. It becomes very tiresome.

You have not shown me anything that I have posted that even borders on breaking the TOU.
You may disagree with me, but you have nothing to show other than your bogus accusations. What part of the
Terms of Use did I break? I shared my views without harassment or abasement of anyone based on their religion, nationality, race, gender, or disability.
It is obvious that you despise my views just as I loathe your, but I do not participate in bigoted personal attacks as those that you defend.
There is no comparison to my what you have posted and LBF's "Jewish Hitler" comment. Sad that you would defend such crap. -
