Cat Stevens - Father And Son »

Cat Stevens - album:Tea for the Tillerman, 1970.

Stevens originally wrote "Father and Son" as part of a proposed musical project with actor Nigel Hawthorn called Revolussia, that was set during the Russian Revolution; the song was about a boy who wanted to join the revolution against the wishes of his father. The musical project faded away with the onset of more than a year-long period of recuperation after a sudden bout of tuberculosis and a collapsed lung; the result of too much fast living after first achieving fame. But "Father and Son" remained, now in a broader context that reflected not just the societal conflict of Stevens' time, but also captured the impulses of older and younger generations in general. The man can distill all of human emotion into wonderful, tender and true morsels.

Humans need to replace politicians with people like this.

It's not time to make a change,
      Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
      Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
      Find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Those are some of the best lyrics ever put to paper. It reminds me of my dad, whom I buried last year at the age of 73. It bring tears to my eyes when I hear it.....

      Thanks for the memories, dissent

Supposedly, when he became Shi'ite?, he wanted this and other songs he created, destroyed. Nice to see such a wish not to have been carried out.
