Comments for Cat Stevens - Father And Son »
Posted By dissent 6 months, 2 weeks ago in Arts & EntertainmentCat Stevens - album:Tea for the Tillerman, 1970.
Stevens originally wrote "Father and Son" as part of a proposed musical project with actor Nigel Hawthorn called Revolussia, that was set during the Russian Revolution; the song was about a boy who wanted to join the revolution against the wishes of his father. The musical project faded away with the onset of more than a year-long period of recuperation after a sudden bout of tuberculosis and a collapsed lung; the result of too much fast living after first achieving fame. But "Father and Son" remained, now in a broader context that reflected not just the societal conflict of Stevens' time, but also captured the impulses of older and younger generations in general. It's not time to make a change,
Reply
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Those are some of the best lyrics ever put to paper. It reminds me of my dad, whom I buried last year at the age of 73. It bring tears to my eyes when I hear it.....
Thanks for the memories, dissent -

Mutainia, you are fixated on other peoples beliefs. I was reading the wonderful and simple comments and was disappointed to see your name here. You can screw up a wet dream. No one else said anything other than something about the lyrics. Can't you ever just give credit where it is due? You need to find some more happiness in Jesus and leave other people to their lives. Believe me, your attack of innocent people does not go unnoticed by our creator. It seems to become more apparent to me that your happiness or the way you help to resuscitate your own faith is by dogging others whos daily lives have no direct or indirect affect on yours.

Appreciate the lyrics, keep your mouth shut and move on.
And DISSENT, please, what ever this person says about this article or my comment in response, don't let him get a rise out of you, he is just a pessimistic party pooper trying to rain on your parade of an article.-

I didn't know I was focussed on other people's beliefs, alamintalib. I thought I was mostly focussed on Muslim beliefs. By the way, I just did a search and couldn't find where Cat Steven's would later wish for the destruction of his old music. Still, I can't see how my commenting above would cause such a rant on your part. By the way, since you are Muslim AND claim to be African American, can you give me a response to what you think of Quran 4:24?

perhaps his rant was caused by the fact that you cannot let any opportunity go by to not comment on islam, even a completely innocuous thread like this one that had no mention of islam till you brought it up.

sort of like the way hyperbola can't let an opportunity go by to rant about zionists. you are exactly like each other.-

visit mutania's posted article here on propeller about the koran.
Reply
there you will find a link posted by dionys. the link is of a video, shot by mutania himself of himself, and his bare flabby naked upper body lounging around his bedroom replete with the crumpled sheets of his un-made bed while he explains with such earnestness about how his dad went with a preacher to "test" a past-life channeler for demon possession, and then accuses this new ager of being the "village warlock."
watch it and you will see just how dislocated and disconnected from reality and reason mutania really is
the day hyperbola ever posts himself on the internet in such a manner is the day you can lump both mutania and hyperbola in the same basket. until then hyperbola can only be accused of excessive cut & pastes, a rather dry humorless demeanor and over-use of the trigger word, "zionist."
as valid, accurate, applicable and appropriate a word as "zionist" may often be it is perhaps we who should question our own responses to it and why we instinctively, or believe we should instinctively, recoil from it and demonize anyone who chooses to vocalize it in an intelligent dialogue-

when you or hyperbola feel like engaging in intelligent dialogue let me know.
Reply
meanwhile all you do is seize every opportunity you can find to say that zionism is the cause of all the worlds ills, even if there is no logical connection to the conversation at hand, or if facts in evidence completely disprove what is being said.
just like Mutania-

i have had dialogues with hyperbola that i would describe as intelligent. whether you have witnessed them or not is irrelevant. and no, i won't be notifying you when i do. that's a responsibility i think you can handle by yourself
Reply
what i have never had is any dialogue with you truthiness, intelligent or otherwise, (at least not that i can recall), but thank you for making your opinions of me quite clear, even if they be as a character assassination.
i take it you're the latest to step up to the plate of personal attacks because i make no bones about being critical of israel's policies, particularly as regards the palestinians.
personally, i have given you no thought at all as your comments hold little if any interest to me, not even enough for them to make any lasting impression that you should be another pro-israeler
but good for you to have found courage enough to do that, even if it be on a completely inappropriate thread.
btw, some points in my defense....
1. i didn't bring up the word "zionism" or "zionists" on this thread.... you did when you launched into your attack on hyperbola.
2. i never use the word "zionism" unless it is raised by another commenter, such as yourself, and it is relevant to the exchange, as it is now. i know what kind of trigger word it is. it causes minds to shut and guns to be loaded (just like you, now)
3. i never say that "zionism is the cause of all the world's ills," as you say i do. i never say it because i don't believe it
4. i never "seize every opportunity" to do that either, as you say i do. again, you were the one who brought it up, not me
so there you have it.
i've denied all four of your accusations truthiness as complete crapiness.
i defy you to prove any or all of your accusations, right here, right now, on this thread
i know for a fact you can't because it's all untrue, but i also know you have some homework to do to prove that to yourself.
take your time.... i'll be waiting-

Funny how listening to Cat Stevens can make me so mellow
Reply
that I gave Mutania a positive - I thought he/she was saying
it was a good thing that the older Cat Stevens works had
not been destroyed.
I must have misunderstood his meaning - another
case of ignorance being bliss! -

a personal attack would be calling you names or some such.
Reply
this was directed at you, but about what you have to say.
and while it is true that you do not use the word "zionist" in your commentary very often, you do choose to always take the position of enmity to Israel regardless of the situation.
I suppose the first time it really stood out to me was during a post about solar panels in Israel and you're comment was that somehow it demonstrated unfairness in favor of Israel b/c the article wasn't about other solar projects around the world.
you are correct that this whole thread is off topic from the post.. it started off with Mutania, and then kept rolling.. I suppose I should have kept my usual policy of ignoring hate speech online, but I just felt the need to push back, at both directions of it.
perhaps if the commentary weren't always so ridiculously imbalanced to one side or the other, they might be worth debating.. but there is no balance, no in between, no recognition that the other side also has valid points to make and your own side is also mistaken in some areas.-

false accusations are a smear on my character. they are therefore a character assassination. THAT is a personal attack
Reply
here is my comment you're referring to…
"now if israel could do that they will have bought themselves some serious bragging rights. but seriously.... israel puts up some solar panels and we have to stand and cheer? wtf?"
http://www.propeller.com/story/2009/04/29/in-israe...
this comment was made in the context of a so-called "war" in which over 1400+ people died and over 3000+ people were injured. most of them civilians. most of them women and children. a "war" in which 13 soldiers from the aggressor's army died. 4 of them having shot each other. a "war" in which one side has no army, no navy and no air force while the other side is gifted by us with the most powerful and destructive armaments the world has ever known. a "war" in which one side's every move is fully controlled by the other.
these are, as you know, facts.
these facts form the foundation of a discussion in which you request to see more “balance.” i’ll leave it to you and your conscience to figure just how you wish to find “balance” within such a state of blatant imbalance.
maybe 3 cheers for israel’s solar panels should do it. yipee
that way you won't actually have to address israel's crimes. you can then sidestep the moral quandray you find yourself in as regards israel as it and its actions really are, and the idealized israel as you have been indoctrinated to believe it is.
after that you should breathe a heavy sigh knowing you have found "balance" in your own mind through moral abdication. and all things israel go back into the "too hard basket"
