How War Caused the Crash »
Posted By Radiofreeeuropa 7 months, 2 weeks ago in Political NewsMillions are now out of work amid declining prospects. US troops still occupy Iraq, a war of aggression that the US has not begun to pay for. Unfortunately, neither the people or the media have made the connection. In fact, the US has probably yet to pay for any war waged since World War II. It is not coincidental that neither has the US actually won a war since WWII. It's not about winning. It's about getting rich and richer.

The rapid decline of the GOP- with now only 21% of the US electorate in favor of them (there was a time when there were 'liberals' in the GOP- Nelson Rockefeller considered himself a 'liberal' for instance). Reality has caught up with them. The GOP made a Faustian bargain which was, in the short term, a bonanza. In the longer term, as a viable party they are probably done!
Reply
So now what progressive minded folks must do is to identify the failed ideologies which have infected both parties and expose them. Otherwise, millions of 'refugees' from the failing GOP will try to find safe haven inside a Democratic party that has not been able to define itself since Ronald Reagan's so-called 'revolution'.
The danger is that the Democratic party will move rightward to embrace the GOP riff-raff abandoning ship. That will remain a problem as long as the US continues to embrace an 'electoral college', absurd primaries, and many other trappings which have the effect of stamping out dissent, third parties, and meaningful debate.-

You're absolutely right. This was a war of profits for the Bush's and their friends and the people of the US were scammed into it. We all should worry about the future as well as today. This war has done more damage to the US in every way then any single item -

Not to criticize but, regarding your observation: The danger is that the Democratic party will move rightward to embrace the GOP riff-raff abandoning ship.
I am less worried about GOP riff-raff scurrying to the Democratic Party
than where WE can find shelter when BOTH parties have learned to enjoy the
benefits of the corporate influence. I believe if it is not yet completely a "done deal" -
it is at the very least a work in progress.
I have seen too many of "my" Democrats trumpet the cause of the people -
only to find out that they too were filling their coffers with dirty, bloody personal
gain, given as a thank you from the MIC. Whether they have a D or an R following
their names....................if they are dirty, get rid of them!
- Baucus chairing the Healthcare panel? Schumer's special tax status for
hedge fund managers? and, Murtha's strident patriotism hiding sweet defense deals,
come to mind right off the top of my head.
To cry for transparency and "sunshine" - while their best deals are transacted
out of view of public scrutiny is the ULTIMATE betrayal.
This submittal was a truly great find...............many thanks RFE!

Now that he is filling the shoes of our President, you should note that his "war" policies are becoming more aligned with President Bush's.

This is not a coincedence.
Most of the anti-Bush sentiment of the last 6 years was not based on factual understanding of the issues.
I support President Obama's change in our war profile and hope you join with us for the betterment of the United States.

You know you can re-stratigize all you want now that we have been at war
for 7 - 8 years, with MANY changes in commanders and stratagems -
but as for your statement that most of the rejection of Bush's war policies
was not "based on factual understanding of the issues" - I say you can
tell it to our DEAD that we had no reason to send to Iraq in 2003!
There was no threat to the continental United States on September 12th, 2001,
coming from Iraq. Our Defense spending and our troops could have been
better used elsewhere. They did NOT need to GO - SUFFER - or DIE -
the factual understanding of the issues as diseminated to us by the
Bush administration..................was a complete and deliberate FRAUD. -

I rarely agree with you but this is not a false statement. And Barack Obama is a good politician and an even better President (so far!). He said consistently throughout the campaign that policy was subject to the events on the ground. Policies cannot be stagnant and unyielding. My greatest hope was that he was not beholden to the Far Left. So far, so good. The realities of the world say we don't pull out of Iraq without some serious soul searching as to the consequences. That is not to say that we belonged there in the first place but to deal with the reality of our current responsibilities. We can't ignore Afghanistan and Western Pakistan either. The consequences of failure there are not minor to our future or the future of the people of those nations either. You've got hundreds of thousands of minds being polluted every day in the madrassas of that region. They aren't going away. Nor is their disdain for the West.
And we re-assess Guantanamo, if we have to...although I think we could find room at a Supermax facility if needed. In the majority these are f-cking dangerous people. It is extremist to believe otherwise. This is imprisonment, not rehabilitation. But their individual cases should be reviewed.
This doesn't mean Dick Cheney is right. What he advocates still is an unyielding use of American power. He never got to implement the neocon idea of "total war" (Iraq was too much of a disaster) but I would hate to see the state of the world if he had. He definitely had (has) imperial intentions. Funny I saw an entire discussion of that administration's policy yesterday and there was hardly a mention of GW regarding policy making. I will always believe he was (for all intents and purposes) absent. Cheney is simply too dominant a personality. G.W. was not an idealogue and his attempts to insist he was were embarassing. A shame it took him so long to find Gates, someone who would stand up to Cheney, whose policies in Iraq had been such abyssmal failures. Even wiser for Obama to retain him.

You should remember history as it was Endo and not say others are rewriting history if you do not have the basics right. Some things are arguable - numbers don't lie. The Republicans gained control of both congressional houses in 1995 and retained it until 2007 except for a short time in 2001 when the Democrats controled the senate and the Republicans retained the house. It switched back to rebulican control in the next election. The budgest during the times you refer to were created by the Republican party.

This is a cool spreadsheet: Table 1.1—SUMMARY OF RECEIPTS, OUTLAYS, AND SURPLUSES OR DEFICITS (?): 1789–2013
I get a deficit of $186 billion for the years 1942-1946
The sum of all on-budget surplus's since then is $112 Billion.
These are real, not inflation adjusted numbers.
So I think that the statement is correct.
This is a worthwhile sheet to look at.

Churchill's understanding of what "conservative" meant was quite different than what passes for it in this nation today. Churchill was a principled man if nothing else. And in terms of what actually shaped the world in the last half century, since the 2nd world war...well it wasn't Stalin, and it wasn't Churchill either. (It was Roosevelt. The progress made economically and the stability of the middle class which in turn created a prosperous economy for U.S. was not a conservative.) And we as a nation were moving along forward until dismantling of the Roosevelt era economic safeguards. I like Obama, I think he is genuinely trying to make the game fairer but I also think the deck is stacked against that happening. So we shall see. Irregardless the wanton path of quick unsustainable profits for the few at the expense of the many has simply been observed as the folly it is. If you can state the clear objective and reasonable strategy to achieve it of either of these "wars", I have an open mind. No one has been able to do it yet. Until that time I am generally against any war, particularly those that are not necessary to the defense of this nation. I harken back to Viet Nam for instance the pro-war right claimed it "had" to be done to prevent China from spreading influence...pretty funny really. All that was set aside when corporatists began salivating over the prospects of exploiting China's political prisoners and population problems replace slavery. What a good deal huh?
Better than the good ol' days...don't even have to house, clothe, or be involved in the health of these people! How profitable! Not only that but we can pull the rug from under those uppity middle class b*****rds who cut into our profits by expecting decency. No damned environmental laws either! Dump right into the water supply whenever you have the urge...ah yes it's good to be fuhrer! As I said I don't agree with every point in the article but 2 I do agree with are that these ill conceived wars were for profits of the few at the expense of the many. And that there is a real danger of rats from the sunken ship infesting the floating one. To expand that analogy just a bit, I think it's also clear that the floating ship really did not engage the other or put up a reasonable defense...rather the other ship made many of it's own crew walk the plank, burned them at the stake, etc. then proceeded to fire it's weapons willy nilly until it sunk from irreparable damage it inflicted upon itself. -

I don't agree with every point. But there are valid ones in there. I lament the fact that there were (past tense) good ideas coming from republicans of the past, (pre-Reagan). The idea of smaller government, generally promoting business (not exclusively multinationals), and personal freedom was sort of a mainstay. Long gone. You are one of very few (and welcome)posters here with those views. The slogans come up once in a while during election cycles but the actions? They have not been helpful to anyone but those who buy lobbyists. (Of course that is not partisan, ultimately this blatant corruption has strangled hope of decent representation whichever party is in the hot seat.)
Reply
I lament also the absence of any reasoned debate coming from DC. I generally like Obama, I voted for him, and did so on actual research of his published positions, not the one dimensional candidate presented in the media. But I also firmly believe one party with too much popularity is disastrous. Good intentions or not. There needs to be plurality. But the same tired old social causes will not gain a single voter. Nor will attempting to scare people with boogiemen. Perhaps the next generation?

Why are you all even giving this article serious thought? The author, Len Hart, believes the US is a Nazi regime; he thinks Oswald was killed by the US government; his blog is just inane. He is just some kook with spell check on his computer. This is just a muddled rant without one rational thought, basically about some super conspiracy of the rich. It's mindless, there is nothing cohesive or documented in any of the wild flights of fantasy.

I have poked around on the financial pages for most of the big Military contractors and the companies on the DOW.
For the most part they are owned by less than 1% insiders. And the list of major holders across the board are remarkably similar. Then if I check out the major holders they seem to be major holders of each other. Many of these major holders are from very old companies (Barclays predates Adam Smith), and a huge percentage is held by companies outside of this country.
They own the companies that compete against each other. They are banker/investors and even though they pay their management very well, they do not know the nuts and bolts of making stuff.
I think Adam Smith would have liked to have seen more direct competition.-

The Banker’s Manifest:

Capital must protect itself in every way, through combination and through legislation. Debts must be collected and loans and mortgages foreclosed as soon as possible. When through a process of law the common people have lost their homes, they will be more tractable and more easily governed by the strong arm of the law, applied by the central power of wealth, under control of leading financiers. People without homes will not quarrel with their leaders. This is well known among our principal men now engaged in forming an imperialism of capital to govern the world. By dividing the people we can get them to expend their energies in fighting over questions of no importance to us except as teachers of the common herd...

My Fellow Americans: 9/11 caused our present situation. Terrorism is the primary cause. Weapons of Mass Destruction has not been properly explained to the American People. Who says Iraq doesn't have weapons of mass destruction? Because they could not find big drums of the stuff. Well it is like this you Liberal Morons. Where can you hide two thermos bottles? That's right just two little bottles of the right Chemical or Powder can wipe out all the life on the Eastern or Western part of the good old U.S.A. The right day, the right dispensing equipment, the right Chemical and a Mass of Quivering bodies could be lining every State. There over there, somewhere, and as yet we haven't found them or rather someone has and is planning to use them. As far as our Economy goes all we have to do is get rid of the dead wood. Illegal Aliens, Welfare mooches, and Criminals. If we quit supporting these individuals than our country would turn around. We are spending too much money on useless people expenses. Deport the Aliens, put the Welfare Mooches to Work, (Ooooh that scares them), and Execute the Criminals before they execute you. Pay Attention America I'm solving your problems. You don't have to punish the Rich who earned what they have or be jealous of them. They have kept this country in the upper echelon though out our history. Our President is jealous and to stupid to realize it. The Real American

The Iraqi war may or may not have caused the crash. But it certainly was a significant factor in the crash. That the Government would lie to its people shouldn't be such a shock.
Reply
And if they will lie to you, and if you don't know whether they are lying or not, because you are prohibited from seeing real data, from what would you base your belief that your Government is doing what is best for you?
Hyper mentioned My Lai. I strongly urge everyone to read about this atrocity. And read the whole story although I must warn you it gets pretty gory, especially where they were cutting off the ears and scalping the Vietnamese.
You need to read this and look at the strong parallel of the Vietnam War and the Iraqi war.
Both started over lies.
Both filled with atrocities against civilians.
Both using the mantra If you don't support the war you are not supporting the troops.
Both having cover-ups all the way to the White House
And neither doling out any criminal penalties to the war Criminals.
Lt. Calley the leader of the Massacre of My Lai, spent two days in Jail. He was the only person who spent time for that Massacre of Old men, women, and children.

What does this have to do with anything?
"Where is the Presidents brain?"
Ask Jackie O, she picking it up off the truck of the car.
"Why does Jackie leap to the back of the car to retrieve part of her husband skull instead of leaping to the front"
This is all pretty basic stuff, the bullet enters the back of the skull creating a hole. As the bullet enters and passes thorough the brain it creates pressure. The pressure is released by the only avenue available. The hole in the back of the head,
Actually the bullet exiting JFK and then striking the senator in the back then passing through his body and striking his wrist pretty much tells us where the bullet came from.
Really, this very simplistic stuff. You can do better then this. Can't you? -

This runs contrary to logic. The role of war in an economy which is based on overproduction and waste is to eliminate unconsumed surplus production by channeling it into forms which blow up or are blown up, as well as sequestering natural resources to ensure the fodder for more overconsumption.
Reply
In other words, our economy could not function WITHOUT war, which is arguably why we have been involved in wars big and small, overt and covert, since WWII.
A better metaphor for all of this would be to say that endless war is like the "stimulus package." Eventually, it is like giving a laxative to a starving man - you will not get much out of it and your patient will suffer also. -

Reply
Not surprising.
The last survey showed that 54% of the Religious Right supports the Iraqi War. They call themselves Christians and complain about Liberals, and mundane BS but they absolutely do steer clear of speaking about atrocities in Vietnam and Iraq. I think maybe if they don't talk about it , then to them it didn't happen. And all those millions of dead weren't Christians anyway. -
