Canada's first Olympic gold medal gymnast retires

Shewfelt announced his retirement Thursday on his blog, where he has chronicled the ups and downs of his career. Shewfelt says he will work with Gymnastics Canada as an ambassador.
Shewfelt was the gold medalist on floor exercise at the Athens Olympics, and a bronze medalist on both floor and vault at the 2003 world championships. Expected to contend for medals on both floor and vault at the Beijing Games, he was injured while training at the 2007 world championships. He broke both of his tibias, and also damaged knee ligaments,
He recovered in time to compete in Beijing. The Canadians were ninth in qualifying and missed the team finals.
