Dick Cheney and Barack Obama gave their security speeches today.
The American Enterprise Institute posted Cheney's speech.
This line was good where Dick shamed Obama for releasing top-secret material:
Releasing the interrogation memos was flatly contrary to the national security interest of the United States. The harm done only begins with top secret information now in the hands of the terrorists, who have just received a lengthy insert for their training manual. Across the world, governments that have helped us capture terrorists will fear that sensitive joint operations will be compromised.

hate to tell you Cheney waxed Obama's behind today.............
I will need to wait for a transcript but the line that struck me was something like 'I have no interest in spending all of our time relitigating the policies of the past eight years.' That sort of came with the job, though, didn't it?
MORE: Obama's defense of the release of the OLC memos is utterly phony. He argues that the memos don't give terrorists any useful information about how to resist US interrogation since Obama has already banned the techniques described in the memos. That makes a mockery of the panel he created (as part of the Executive Order establishing the Army Field Manual as the basis for all interrogations, including the CIA) that is studying the possibility of alternative techniques for the CIA; the panel is meant to report back in July.
Come July, the panel will recommend the alowance of certain enhanced techniques other than waterboarding, and the terrorists will be well informed as to what those techniques are.
SPOKEN LIKE A LAW PROFESOR: Obama declares he will run the Executive as a co-equal branch of government with Congress and the Courts. Another unilateral surrender!
CLOSING GITMO: Obama reiterates the pledge to close Gitmo, but I didn't hear any deadline. The Fierce Urgency of Someday.
DUELING CARICATURES: Obama characterizes the national debate as having divided us into two poles - the left believes that almost no national security issue takes precedence over transparency and the right has a view that can be summed as "Anything Goes".
Really? "Anything goes"? Did he actually read the OLC enhanced interrogation memos, which made it clear that lots of things wouldn't go? -

Cheney pounds the table for the release of the memos that marked the successes of the enhanced interrogation program, insisting we have only heard half the story. I see another Obama climbdown coming.
On enhanced interrogation, Cheney delivers the defense of the program and the CIA professionals who implemented it that the CIA would like to hear from Obama, but won't. A flavor:

And to call this a program of torture is to libel the dedicated professionals who have saved American lives, and to cast terrorists and murderers as innocent victims. For all that we’ve lost in this conflict, the United States has never lost its moral bearings. And when the moral reckoning turns to the men known as high-value terrorists, I can assure you they were neither innocent nor victims. As for those who asked them questions and got answers: they did the right thing, they made our country safer, and a lot of Americans are alive today because of them.
Like so many others who serve America, they are not the kind to insist on a thank-you. But I will always be grateful to each one of them, and proud to have served with them for a time in the same cause. They, and so many others, have given honorable service to our country through all the difficulties and all the dangers. I will always admire them and wish them well. And I am confident that this nation will never take their work, their dedication, or their achievements, for granted.

I mean, look at him...chomping at the bit, ranting and raving like the old man that he is, trying to build up his image and that of the former President.
We all know his sad history, and that of Bush...that's why McCain wasn't elected.
Who wants what we had for the eight years before Obama? No one I know, not even the few dissolusioned conservatives who winced when the former administration spent money like it was growing on trees, backed away from their small government stance, and got us into a financial mess that not even the greatest economic minds can easily grapple with.
And Cheney has the nerve to come out now, defend his failed policies, and criticize things, that for the most part, were created by him and Bush...
Well, I'm trying to keep from laughing about him, really...he had his chance to do some good things for this country, and he failed.
Thank God he never ran for, and was elected to, the highest office...we know how bad this country was under him and Bush...try to imagine how much worse things would be now if he had ever been elected President...

(CNN) — Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge told CNN former Vice President Dick Cheney's repeated charge the Obama administration has made the country less safe is wrong.

"Yeah, I disagree with Dick Cheney," the Pennsylvania Republican and former Bush administration official told CNN's John King, adding he "does not" think the country is more vulnerable to an attack under President Obama.
Ridge's comments come after both Obama and Cheney gave dueling speeches on national security, during which the president sharply condemned Bush administration interrogation practices while Cheney vigorously defended them.
In the interview with CNN, set to air in full on State of The Union with John King Sunday, Ridge said he disagrees with "the approach both men are taking."
"It's just the whole notion of a Republican vice president giving a speech after the incumbent Democratic president," he said. "It's gotta go beyond the politics of either party."
The former Pennsylvania governor also took issue with a portion of Obama's speech, during which he said some Bush national security decisions were based on "fear, rather than foresight." May 22, 2009

Actually, there is a middle ground; the point of the torture memos was finding it. That’s the only note that’s a tiny bit off here, though. Read the full transcript at the Standard, as there’s so much to enjoy about this speech that everyone’s bound to have a different favorite moment. For Frum, it was Cheney calling Obama out for covering up information about whether the interrogations worked. For me, it’s the second half of the clip you’re about to see.-

Well it is telling that Cheney gave this speech at one of the homes of the israel-firsters (AEI) and that his host was none other than ultra-zionist William Kristol. America has lost her soul, and so has her president.
A despairing country elected a president who promised change. Americans arrived from every state to witness in bitter cold Obama’s swearing-in ceremony. The mall was packed in a way that it has never been for any other president.
The people’s good will toward Obama and the expectations they had for him were sufficient for Obama to end the gratuitous wars and enact major reforms. But Obama has deserted the people for the interests. He is relying on his non-threatening demeanor and rhetoric to convince the people that change is underway.
The change that we are witnessing is in Obama, not in policies. Obama is morphing into Dick Cheney.
Obama has not been in office four months and already a book could be written about his broken promises.
Obama said he would close the torture prison, Guantanamo, and abolish the kangaroo courts known as military tribunals. But now he says he is going to reform the tribunals and continue the process, but without confessions obtained with torture. Getting behind Obama’s validation of the Bush/Cheney policy, House Democrats pulled the budget funding that was to be used for closing Guantanamo.
The policy of kidnapping people (usually on the basis of disinformation supplied by their enemies) and whisking them off to Third World prisons to be interrogated is to be continued. Again, Obama has substituted a "reform" for his promise to abolish an illegal policy. Rendition, Obama says, has also been reformed and will no longer involve torture. How would anyone know? Is Obama going to assign a U.S. government agent to watch over the treatment given to disappeared people by Third World thugs? Given the proclivity of American police to brutalize U.S. citizens, nothing can save the victims of rendition from torture.

I only saw a short clip of Cheney's speech, but reading the full transcript just blows me away and makes me grateful that people did what they had to do and that being a true leader is making the hard, unpopular decisions sometimes, instead of the easy, popular ones. It brought back a lot of memories of how it felt on 9/11.-

Barack Obama is the President of the United States. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of his policies thus far, but calling him or comparing him to Osama bin Laden is way out of line... just like most of the rhetoric about Cheney/Bush. Comments like these automatically put the other side on the defensive. When defenses come up, logic and rationale fly out the window. Everyone begins to draw lines and hunker down deep in their own position... that makes discussions useless.

Did anybody tell Dick Cheney that he is NOT VP anymore? For 8 years, Cheney was the acting President while Bush slept. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice ran this nation like a 'secret society' or the 'Mafia'. I believe Obama ought to authorize a special inquiry into the Iraq war, the patriot act and Bush's violation of our civil liberties and the US Constitution.

The rest was the sloppy confusion we've come to expect from him. For example:
1) He wants to close GITMO and release the detainees. How noble and good, but without a plan he ran into criticism. The response, well Bush released 500+ detainees, and that was bad. Which is it?
2) GITMO is a recruiting poster for terrorists. Well, The Africa embassy bombings, the USS Cole, and 9/11 were all pre-GITMO. Since GITMO, there hasn't been an attack at the US of that magnitude.
3) Terrorists are signing up because of GITMO. Yeah, and transfering them to solitary confinement at SuperMax prisons will make the terrorists feel alright and end the jihad. Besides, I thought he said there were no more terrorists and that the "war" was over???
4) Enhanced interrogation didn't yield anything of value. Says who? Release the reports and let us see. That's what would be transparent.
5) He wants to try terrorists in civil courts, but what if they are released on technicalities. "No we'll make sure that doesn't happen." Kind of like an old wester: "Let's have a fair trial and then hang them." How lofty and upholding of rule of law.
6) Its a mess we inherited. This again??? What about the mess you are creating? Address that.
There's more. Just a bunch of kumbaya rhetoric without meaning and if the situation was not so serious I be laughing my ass off.-

Actually I won't comment on your whole post but in your number one point you are either deceived or lying. Obama does not want to just release all of the detainees. It is clear that they will be detained as long as needed to obtain convictions or in cases of National Security may be detained as enemy combatants. These points were all addressed in the Presidents talk. And yes there is a rule of law just for these types of cases. Try and get at least one fact straight before you post please.

As for the rest of your points they all have either misleading statements or just sort of overlap the first point but with different words.
Bu if in fact one released everyone of those people and sent them all to sign up as terrorists it would make little difference. The number is just too small. It is frankly hard for me to believe that this mere handful of men can scare the crap out of a whole nation because they are just men like everyone else not some super human clones. Hell a platoon of Marines or Airborne can make chopped steak out of that many. But I guess that old panic monkey can really ride some people's backside. -

Make all you want of Cheney's little self promotion tour but the fact stands that while the claim is made by Cheney that they, the Bush administration, kept America safe they also were the ones who were in charge when the 9/11 attacks happened. There were people in the administration that tried to warn about a possible attack and they were ignored.

It seems however Mr Fleischer was either ignorant of the Federal Research Division report or the Bush administration failed to act on what seems to have been actionable intelligence.
I wonder why Cheney failed to mention that in his self aggrandizing sixteen page prepared speech? Is reading off of paper different than using a teleprompter there vettenut?
Spin it any way you want PC25, but we got our asses handed to us on Sept 11,2001 because somebody was not doing their job and Bush/Cheney were fully in charge at that time and had been for seven months. The rest is embroidered fiction all made up in the aftermath of a possibly preventable attack. This country was duped by fear and propaganda much of which has proven to be fallacious claims of WMD and connections between al Qaeda and Iraq. Cheney's speech was no more than a continuation of trying to scare us all into believing that all three hundred million people in this country are in mortal danger every second. To me Cheney is no more than a frightened little man trying to cover the mistakes of his past.-

Make all you want of Cheney's little self promotion tour but the fact stands that while the claim is made by Cheney that they, the Bush administration, kept America safe they also were the ones who were in charge when the 9/11 attacks happened.

after 8 years of Clintons budget cuts to the NSA, CIA and FBI and the infamous wall put up by the Dems to keep agencies from sharing information......Clinton decimated the intelligenge communitym constatnly weakened the military with his budget cuts. during the 1990s and did nothing despite repeated terrorist attacks starting with the first WTC attack. His action emboldened Bin Ladin especially pull out the Rangers from Somailia and that's Bin Ladens own words........

OBama gave his point of view as a new president with little or no real experience in dealing with terrorism then Cheney gave his opinion from the view of actual experience in dealing with terrorism.
