A fiercely debated, long-delayed investigation into Ireland\'s Roman Catholic-run institutions says priests and nuns terrorized thousands of boys and girls in workhouse-style schools for decades — and government inspectors failed to stop the chronic beatings, rapes and humiliation.

I will never understand how people can continue to trust and remain loyal to an institution that continually proves itself unworthy of neither trust nor loyalty from any of its followers. How many children have to suffer the terrors of abuse before people wake up and demand accountability from those committing such horrific acts? Even this report, while shedding light on abuses, falls short of holding anyone actually accountable. No names are given. Only the victims are known, not the perpetrators. How is that justice? And how can people who align themselves with this organization continue to when this is the repeated stance of their church....that the protection of pedophile predators is ALWAYS more important than the safety and wellness of its parishioners who pay the bills through their tithes, etc. I am not criticizing anyone's religion here, but I do question the sanity of such a choice when the prevailing theme appears to be pedophilia and abuse of the youngest and more vulnerable in the group.

    FTA:

...when questioned, the Christian Brothers indicated they would continue to protect the identities of rank-and-file brothers accused of abuse — men who were never reported to police, and instead were allowed to change jobs and keep harming children.

Unbelievable. This truly sickens me. These people are suppose to be men and women of GOD. I'm a Christian and they will have their day of judgement. I hope they're ready to face the GOD of creation. They will most likely have their place in the lake of fire where they will be tormented day and night. You guys I'm sorry about the lake of fire thing. But these people sicken me. These names need to be released. If this happened to ME and they wouldn't name my abuser OR abusers I would be outraged. These people will have their day of judgement.

I don't understand the problem with the secrecy orders. All you do is scream the names of the priests loud before they shut you up. After that word will get around to any potential cell mate of the priest and child molesters get "special" treatment in jail.

Ireland doesn't have a very good record on supervision of treatment of children at Catholic residential institutions. The fictionalized 2002 movie "The Magdalene Sisters" details abuse suffered by teenage girls (not even orphans, but sent there by their parents as sinners in need of redemption) sent to "Magdalene Asylums" run by a Catholic order, where they worked as slaves in laundries and suffered systematic emotional and physical abuse at the hands of the nuns running the "asylums." The Magdalene Asylums had were opened in the 1880s; the last one closed in 1996, though not as a result of any investigation.
