Powell to Republicans: Listen to moderates, too »
Posted By Progressive 5 months, 2 weeks ago in Political NewsWASHINGTON (AP) - The conservative vs. moderate split threatening to rupture the Republican Party played out across the airwaves Sunday, with Colin Powell and Tom Ridge denouncing shrill and judgmental voices they say are steering the GOP too far right.

“I disagree with Dick Cheney,” Ridge said on CNN’s “State of The Union” today. “Waterboarding is a matter of debate but it’s no longer an issue. Debate around memos and waterboarding don’t make us less safe.”

Re going more moderate, well, the GOP has no choice, really, if it wishes to survive.

That is, it needs to attract younger conservs who, polls show, are reluctant to rally around the usual social issues--gay rights, freedom of choice, etc.--that the party has for so long used to inflame, divide and conquer.-

Or...a darker solution is to somehow recruit more people into the religious right. I think that's the route many of them are taking instead of moving to the center. Most of the Republican statements I've seen are advocating more religious intolerance, not less--circling the wagons, so-to-speak. And the vast majority of TV religious leaders are Christian fundamentalists, so people still don't see they have choices and continue to be exposed to endless intimidation.

Still, I'm hopeful. I think the original focus of the Republican party was more realistic than what we see from either major party today. -

Powell said Limbaugh holds too much sway over Republican officials, citing recent incidents in which Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was forced to “lay prostrate on the floor and apologize” for criticizing the radio personality.

There is the liberal ignorance showing through. Do you let Soros lead you around by the nose? If not then why do claim that Limbaugh has that much sway. Saying that Steele did what you describe is going way overboard. Steele got angry and then opened his mouth. Then apologized for it. You people then make a big deal over it twisting it into something that it is not.

The problem with Powell is that if he is a moderate he endorsed the absolute most liberal Senator in the election. Obama is the antithesis of anything moderate or conservative. That is why people have suggested that he only endorsed Obama because of the color of his skin. He is looking bad either way. If it was the color of Obama's skin that makes him a racist. If he did it because of Obama's beliefs then he is not a Republican but a super liberal. Which is he? A racist or not a Republican?

Powell is virtually the only "old guard" Republican who impresses me at all.

After what he was made to do for the Bush regime in the lead up to the Iraq war - and then made to look so foolish for shilling for them - its a wonder that he does still belong to the Republican party.
I also saw his endorsement of Obama as the clincher of the latter's election and stated so on these boards. -

Wasnt the left Bashing Powell for supporting the war and Bush ???? What now that he agrees with you you LOVE him ????? WOW you guys really are 1 sided, if i didnt like somebody for something and they took a different stance, then i would still not like them, because to change your stance all of a sudden would be just show and no substance. so which is it?? do you not like him , or do you like him now because he agrees with you ???

We were bashing him for not standing up to the Bush administration. He knew from the start that going into Iraq was a mistake. He should have stood up a little stronger. We can disagree with him and still respect him. He would be a much better leader to the party than the current leadership, real or imagined.

Why listen to Powell or moderates when do they ever have anything to contribute? Never, they just dodder around like Colin Powell never making a firm decision or commitment about anything. Moderates are the "know nothings" of American politics.

The reason any Democrat would appeal to moderates is just to be sure that the Dems win again.

McCain was a moderate.
He lost.
Obama was a left wing Marxist radical.
He won.
We need a right wing conservative radical in order to win.
No problem.
The reason Powell wants a moderate is just to assure another Democrat win.
Sorry. Ain't gonna happen Colin.
The way I see it...Colin is just another word for rectum. -

Except for the tiny little problem they would need the majority of Americans to vote for them. FYI, dont think your going to win the ticket with that much of a seperated minority vote. -

My god said be ye hot,or cold not tepid, lukewarm, and useless.I can just see,and hear a life long republican saying well maybe I can see killing some babies, and I could hate America a couple of days a month, but that's all.I couldn't say I support the troops, while really hating their guts for for the job they do.You'll have to give me something else to make me a moderate.Like teach me how I can look, and listen to Pelosi,Reed,Durban, and Kennedy, with puking.

I totally agree with lloydm65. If I must set my principles aside to accept liberals or moderates - forget it. The liberals believe what they believe. We conservatives believe what we believe. Let the moderates choose which side they are on, without looking for a hand-out! The only reason McCain did as well as he did was because of Sarah! I am sick of the Republican Party "reaching" across the aisle.....

im not political by no means so my ? is this the 800b stimulas that was signed into law, y not give each american over 18 or 21 a million $ and let the people do what they do best spend buy houses, homeowners ins.,repair property, purchase vehicles, buy vehicle ins, etc. seems all of these things would work better then giving all that money 2 the same people who messed it up in the first place and it wouldnt take but a few hundred million since theres only 350 million americans this is coming from just ab avg citizen. aig recieved alot of bailout and majority of their bailout money went 2 banks overseas. all i ever wanted was to b shown how to keep the money coming n with good returns, cds, savings acct. not the answer,

The Dems/libs have talk-athons about the Republican party. It must be a whole lot more interesting than the Democrat party or Obama's actions.
We Republicans don't bother to discuss it - it will all come together. The disagreements and "splits" are healthy and will eventually meld into a win in 2010. -

Moderates I know of - and I know plenty - who still consider themselves Republican are fighting a prolonged battle for the soul of their party right now against the idiocy that is currently prevailing. They believe that they can help the party rise from the ashes of 2010, which they acknowledge is sure to come at the hands of Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee....or Rush Limbaugh.... They see Michael Steele as gutless....

We need loyal opposition giving actual alternative solutions. As a progressive, I would like to see even more....ie: I would like to see some Green seats and Libertarian seats in congress. This is healthy for democracy and I believe our founders never intended for just two parties to dominate our political discourse.
Unfortunately, moderates are invisible to the GOP right now. It's much easier to exploit the irrational fears of their neo-con/fundamentalist base voters (I mean, you see the evidence with most of the wingnut posters, here.....c'mon!....). They will have to lose in one or two more cycles before they come to their senses and embrace TRUE conservative principles....if the party is to survive at all....
