“I disagree with Dick Cheney,” Ridge said on CNN’s “State of The Union” today. “Waterboarding is a matter of debate but it’s no longer an issue. Debate around memos and waterboarding don’t make us less safe.”

Re going more moderate, well, the GOP has no choice, really, if it wishes to survive.

That is, it needs to attract younger conservs who, polls show, are reluctant to rally around the usual social issues--gay rights, freedom of choice, etc.--that the party has for so long used to inflame, divide and conquer.

Or...a darker solution is to somehow recruit more people into the religious right. I think that's the route many of them are taking instead of moving to the center. Most of the Republican statements I've seen are advocating more religious intolerance, not less--circling the wagons, so-to-speak. And the vast majority of TV religious leaders are Christian fundamentalists, so people still don't see they have choices and continue to be exposed to endless intimidation.

Still, I'm hopeful. I think the original focus of the Republican party was more realistic than what we see from either major party today.

By realistic I hope you are meaning less government , fiscally responsible and less interference with each of us on a personal level. I don't know what the original ideas were of the two parties down there were but up here they were not that much different except the liberals seemed to always want to create a beaurocracy to handle every situation that came up, which eventually led to way to much government. it seems that both parties up here now do the same thing and from what I see is that things are sort of similiar down there.

They both want to enlarge government in different ways and interfere with both different and some of the same rights, it seems. The problem seems to be the ignorance or indoctrination of many of the people. There are limited resources and everyone keeps spending more than we have.

Powell said Limbaugh holds too much sway over Republican officials, citing recent incidents in which Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was forced to “lay prostrate on the floor and apologize” for criticizing the radio personality.

There is the liberal ignorance showing through. Do you let Soros lead you around by the nose? If not then why do claim that Limbaugh has that much sway. Saying that Steele did what you describe is going way overboard. Steele got angry and then opened his mouth. Then apologized for it. You people then make a big deal over it twisting it into something that it is not.

The problem with Powell is that if he is a moderate he endorsed the absolute most liberal Senator in the election. Obama is the antithesis of anything moderate or conservative. That is why people have suggested that he only endorsed Obama because of the color of his skin. He is looking bad either way. If it was the color of Obama's skin that makes him a racist. If he did it because of Obama's beliefs then he is not a Republican but a super liberal. Which is he? A racist or not a Republican?

I think "Entire World" is an exaggeration. Many, if not most, countries in the world are not led by moderates.

were on the same page, but I was talking more about the actual people of the world and not the leadership of each country, as you pointed out, who tend to be clearly on one side or the other.

I do really believe most people out there are moderate and just want to be left alone to live life, make business, have babies, etc. and sure, many have extreme points of view, but even most of those people don't want to see other people blown up or tortured who disagree with their own point of view.

Some of the recent polls are showing a slide for both major parties. People are more willing to call themselves Independent then either repub or dem right now.

Think the dems have till the next election to reign in their extreme edge as well. People are expecting real results on the job and economy front, regardless of who is in charge, they need to deliver or its good by to them and hello somebody else.

So time to listen to the people and get things done, not push an ideological agenda due to make-up of congress. They represent every voter and citizen in their districts not just the one party they belong to.

Powell is virtually the only "old guard" Republican who impresses me at all.
After what he was made to do for the Bush regime in the lead up to the Iraq war - and then made to look so foolish for shilling for them - its a wonder that he does still belong to the Republican party.
I also saw his endorsement of Obama as the clincher of the latter's election and stated so on these boards.

We were bashing him for not standing up to the Bush administration. He knew from the start that going into Iraq was a mistake. He should have stood up a little stronger. We can disagree with him and still respect him. He would be a much better leader to the party than the current leadership, real or imagined.

So Powell lies to the American people and gets us into a war in Iraq, But because he now is against Limbaugh, you stand up for him? I think you need to rethink your logic here. Powell did what he did and now soldiers are dying. I honestly would not have agreed with the war if it wasn't for Powell showing us mobile WMD units.

But if you want a liar then you can have him. Just adding more to the pile of liars you already have. Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, Clinton, and Powell.

So b-happy, now that the myth of Iraq's WMDs has long since been discredited, does that mean you're now against the war in Iraq and believe Cheney and Rumsfeld were also lying?

Powell is a militaryman brought up in the traditon of loyalty to his superiors. Bush was Powell's superior, but the true job of a the military is to defend America & I believe in Powell's change of opinion (knowing facts that we the public) did not know he acted in the finest traditon of defending America

Why listen to Powell or moderates when do they ever have anything to contribute? Never, they just dodder around like Colin Powell never making a firm decision or commitment about anything. Moderates are the "know nothings" of American politics.

The reason any Democrat would appeal to moderates is just to be sure that the Dems win again.
                          McCain was a moderate.
                          He lost.
Obama was a left wing Marxist radical.
                          He won.
We need a right wing conservative radical in order to win.
                          No problem.
The reason Powell wants a moderate is just to assure another Democrat win.
                          Sorry. Ain't gonna happen Colin.
The way I see it...Colin is just another word for rectum.

McCain was a moderate before he started running for President this time. During the campaign he spouted the same line as the rest of the party. He was no longer a " Maverick Reformer" but instead a " Reformed Maverick".

auto, if you had left off the last very rude sentence there would be a lot more positive response.

OMG. Some one throws you cons a rope to save y0urself and you tell them you find with just hanging on broken branch.

We need a right wing conservative radical in order to win.
                              No problem.

Except for the tiny little problem they would need the majority of Americans to vote for them. FYI, dont think your going to win the ticket with that much of a seperated minority vote.

I totally agree with lloydm65. If I must set my principles aside to accept liberals or moderates - forget it. The liberals believe what they believe. We conservatives believe what we believe. Let the moderates choose which side they are on, without looking for a hand-out! The only reason McCain did as well as he did was because of Sarah! I am sick of the Republican Party "reaching" across the aisle.....

So now all independants are also looking for a hand out, go ahead and insult everyone who doesn't goosestep with you, it's a great game plan.

im not political by no means so my ? is this the 800b stimulas that was signed into law, y not give each american over 18 or 21 a million $ and let the people do what they do best spend buy houses, homeowners ins.,repair property, purchase vehicles, buy vehicle ins, etc. seems all of these things would work better then giving all that money 2 the same people who messed it up in the first place and it wouldnt take but a few hundred million since theres only 350 million americans this is coming from just ab avg citizen. aig recieved alot of bailout and majority of their bailout money went 2 banks overseas. all i ever wanted was to b shown how to keep the money coming n with good returns, cds, savings acct. not the answer,

I love this type of discussion.

The Dems/libs have talk-athons about the Republican party. It must be a whole lot more interesting than the Democrat party or Obama's actions.

We Republicans don't bother to discuss it - it will all come together. The disagreements and "splits" are healthy and will eventually meld into a win in 2010.

Moderates I know of - and I know plenty - who still consider themselves Republican are fighting a prolonged battle for the soul of their party right now against the idiocy that is currently prevailing. They believe that they can help the party rise from the ashes of 2010, which they acknowledge is sure to come at the hands of Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee....or Rush Limbaugh.... They see Michael Steele as gutless....

We need loyal opposition giving actual alternative solutions. As a progressive, I would like to see even more....ie: I would like to see some Green seats and Libertarian seats in congress. This is healthy for democracy and I believe our founders never intended for just two parties to dominate our political discourse.

Unfortunately, moderates are invisible to the GOP right now. It's much easier to exploit the irrational fears of their neo-con/fundamentalist base voters (I mean, you see the evidence with most of the wingnut posters, here.....c'mon!....). They will have to lose in one or two more cycles before they come to their senses and embrace TRUE conservative principles....if the party is to survive at all....
