Ever pull leeches off yourself after a stream or river crossing.
Ever go to sleep at night with the stench of death all around ya ???

Or a corpse with it's head split open and the brain coming out ???
How about dead children, splayed out in the dust soaked in blood ??
Parents and children wailing over the deaths of their loved ones ???

I have and more. I still see them sometimes in my nightmares !!!
