Looks to me like she understands the rights of the little guys:

"Before she was elevated to the bench, Sotomayor worked for a variety of causes aiding the less fortunate, including helping found the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, and working with a group called SONYMA, the State of New York Mortgage Agency, which helped structure affordable housing programs for low-income homebuyers."

She gave a speech declaring that the ethnicity and sex of a judge “may and will make a difference in our judging.”
Reply
Huh? Since when is sex and ethnicity a litmus test for a SC judge?
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,”
Huh? A little bit sexist and racist aren't we?
Or, if a white male HAS lived that life, he will, by her definition, come to a better conclusion then she?
Wow!-

Why is it sexist or racist about what she said?
Reply
Unless you are a woman, you probably don't understand her comments.
It may be the 21st century, but still there are too many men that really don't understand what some women go through, especially when it comes to single mothers or being promoted at work or earning the same pay as men in the same positions. -

how can she NOT judge from the standpoint of a hispanic woman?
Reply
like scalia doesn't judge from a perpective of an uptight man?
its called "human nature"
what she said was neither sexist nor racist, and merely pointed out that her life experience may bring her to a different, unique (and yes, sometimes better) conclusion than say, a white male who was raised in privilige.
if the SCOTUS is there to interpret and apply the law, the more unique perspectives, the better.
deal with it.

Like "objective" news reporting, the notion that one's life experiences must have no impact on the process of judicial decision making is naive and unrealistic.

Do conservatives feel that Scalia adjudicates from a Platonic realm of pure justice?
Obama's wish to have an Hispanic woman on the SC is in itself tacit acknowledgment that many factors make a judge what she or he is and believes in. -

Wow.........a Supreme Court nominee with a brain..what a concept. She was editor of Princeton's Law Review, Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated *** Laude ranking #2 in her class. Her record shows her to be of a mind embracing judicial restraint rather than the "go with your gut" mentality that the previous administration loved to embrace. She appears, at least on first examination, to be unbeatable. I realize the far right is already trying to seize on a couple isolated statements she's made throughout her career and trying to blow them out of proportion, but I doubt it will work. Nothing so far has any real merit to it. In fact, I saw on CNN yesterday a GOP spokesperson explain his reasoning for disliking this pick and the only thing he could say was "Because Barack Obama appointed her."
Reply
Yeah....that's a good reason to oppose her.
Thank goodness those voting prefer intellect over politics when it comes to this most powerful appointment. In the end, I am betting she's going to sail through the confirmation hearings without much resistance. It's hard to argue against her credentials. Short of her imploding on herself, she'll likely be confirmed with ease.
