It's no secret that whoever Obama nominated, would become a point of contention for the GOP to use as an opportunity to politicize and promote their failing agenda and party. No surprise here.
Reply
Even Orin Hatch, touted to be one of the most fair-minded Republicans, now claims that despite his previous support of Judge Sotomayor's confirmation for the Federal Appeals Court, he may have to review that decision in light of some absurd offhanded comment about how the courts legislate.
One has to be a moron to think that all Supreme Court Judges are not aware of their role and that a consequence of their decisions may sometimes affect legislation. Of course, that doesn't mean that any Justice including Stotomayor would approach their job as an opportunity to legislate. So the GOP is already trying to paint a new picture of the moderate Sotomayor, simply because she has been nominated by President Obama and not by former President Bush.
Again, these kinds of tactics will backfire and bite the GOP in the ass.
If the GOP would like to politicize this nomination and to tie it up without due cause, I think Obama should announce an alternative nomination - a candidate who is much more liberal. Let the wing nuts take the blame for confirming a more liberal justice - that would do more to shut up a opposition party that has little to do with OUR time other than throw stones. -

Who was it that changed that Republican idea. Oh that is right. The Democrats. They are proud of "Borking" people. Kennedy after ranting at a prospect for being a judge calling him all kinds of names later told the person that it was not personal. How does challenging someones morals not become personal?

Maybe I am just used to Bush selecting jusges based on extreme judicial views and how long they can stay in office... I love the idea of a more diverse court. I just hope she is not so moderate that the republican like her...

On the other hand if the republican object too much to a moderate they could further cement their name as the party of NO... -

I think shes a good choice. Now the chore is to see if the Republicans really believe the President should get his judicial appts. We've had Bush appt politico's to the court its refreshing to get someone nominated that believes in the Constitution,

It will be interesting indeed - seems like they are tipping their hand already and calling her a judicial activist and claiming that SCOTUS is a liberal court... Makes me wonder what alternate reality they are living in... Do they know the Courts current make up? Do they know this nominee's judicial record? The answer to both seems to be a lound and proud we don't need to know reality to complain about fiction...

She'll sail through. The only reason you Obamatons like her is because no one told you her background includes ADA work (ie, tough on crime...er...Democrats) and that she was elevated to the federal level by Bush 41. Sotomayor also upheld Bush 43's Mexico City Policy limiting use of certain foreign aid funds abroad for abortion. (Note to illiterate liberals: Hispanics as a demographic are overwhelmingly opposed to your infanticide policies and hatred for the unborn under the "choice" lie.)

I think Hispanics (heavily Catholic) showed us in the last election that the abortion issue is not necessarily the determining factor in deciding elections as Obama carried 69% of the Hispanic vote.
The key is to not necessarily make abortion illegal but do what ever is in our power to make them rare. -

I guess that's the real difference here. I see Sotomayor as a person, not a 'demographic'.
Your fear tactic that she will automatically be pro-life because of her ethnicity speaks volumes. -

1. If you have a problem with Ms. Sotomayor's ascension thru the judicial ranks, blame GWH Bush.
2. Her voting against limiting abortion funds shows she is independent minded.
3. That ruling should be a positive point for the conservative side. So what are you bitching about?

That statement doesn't fly no matter what angle you view it from. The Left are Kool-Aid drinkers? Huh? If you haven't learned anything from the first few months of Obama is that the Left hardly thinks in lockstep. And just amazing that conservatives b-tch while Obama seizes the middle. You only drive yourself further away from the center.
Was it not entirely predictable that you would bitch no matter who he picked? Were we happy with Roberts? H-ll no! Did we just have to sit there and watch him be approved? Absolutely! You will end up doing the same. Enjoy the process. But this was a good choice. This is going to put the GOP squarely against Hispanics (forget her views on choice) if they dare say anything. It will further show the inability to cope with what the future holds. They will refuse to accept someone of a different race and culture because they hold differing views. And if history is needed, trying to gauge a Justice's views once they arrive at the high court is a very tricky business. Obama would hardly be the first to misjudge. But let the circus begin! Let the declarations of the end of the Republic start! The very fabric of this nation will be torn asunder! Oh, the horror!
I am a white male but I cannot be so ignorant as to say that if I lived another 50 years I would be a minority in this country. That is an almost certain inevitability. To refuse to cope with that FACT is simply pathetic. This is simple evolution of the melting pot. But you probably don't believe in evolution either! -

It is quite obvious that your bigotry makes it impossible for you to engage in meaningful discourse. What does language preference have to do with Sotomayor? Your assumptions have definitely made you look like a real ass. -

Ah...nothing warms the heart like an MSNBC article with an incorrect spelling. Remember the good ol' days when liberal bigots would attack a Vice President for the crime of holding up a card written by an illiterate public education teacher that had a word presented wrong?
Turns out the mind-numbed media was actually so fond of Quayle they decided to get dumb enough to actually misuse/misspell their own words without help from teachers.-

You are referring to the typographical error of "that" instead of "than"? That is simply a minor glitch that was not cleaned up by the editor (Spellcheck is useless for this type of typo).
Reply
You are also referring to VP Dan Quayle. He did not simply hold up a card with a misspelled word. He had asked a boy to spell "potatoes," which the child did correctly. Then Quayle attempted to correct him by spelling "potatos." The child, I think, was taken aback and Quayle repeated the wrong spelling. The teacher had nothing to do with the misspelling, but she prudently kept her mouth shut. There was no card she wrote or that Quayle held up.
This is res ipsa loquitor evidence of your selective memory.
You really have denigrated public school teachers as a group when you so flippantly said "illiterate public education teacher." The vast majority are dedicated, hard-working, idealistic people working under stressful conditions, underpaid, and (as evidenced by you) underappreciated. I salute them one and all.

if you want a judge that will legislate rather than uphold the constitution then he has found the right, I mean left, one. If you want supreme court justices not to act like a third branch of the government and do what they are supposed to do which is uphold the US constitution then by her own words Obary's choice is way off here.

Thom, its your repug judges, scalia, thomas, alito & roberts who support the Unitary Executive and already voted to throw out habeas corpus, 800 years of accepted western law.
Reply
It was also one of your repug nominees who ran on a platform of changing the Constitution - Huckabee!
It was another of your presidents who said the Constitution is just a piece of paper and ignored the part that says the law is adhereing to international agreements!
Only two presidents, both repugs, have said they are above the law: Nixon & Dumya!
More revisionist history to try and hide your lack of values, adherance to the law and a lack of a conscience?

GOVERNMENT WORKERS WERE THE LOWET PAYED AND NOW, THEY ARE THE HIGHEST PAID AND HAVE BETTER BENIFITS THAN THE PRIVATE SECTOR. NOW EVERYONE WANTS A JOB WITH THE GOVERNMENT: HIGHEST PAY, BEST HEALTH BENEFITS, GURANTEED RETIREMENT. HOW MORE SOCIALIST CAN THAT BE?

We are one vote away from throwing out habeas corpus and approval of the Unitary executive with Scalia, Thomas, Roberts & Alito... too close to completely changing America for the worse! We can't afford to have someone who agrees with these extreme, right wing ideologues!

Dear Propeller:
President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor is a brilliant one.
Her accolades which precede her and a legacy for the history of this country and her family is imminent.
Although her judicial opinions will most likely be interpreted by many but her vision and direction are unequivocally and judicially refined.
Because our society is in complete revision of itself and reflective of the 1960's many inquisitions will proceed but fail to conquer the U.S. Supreme Court.
You Judge Sotomayor will grace this court with integrity and honor.
Best Wishes,

My Fellow Americans: Well, the President was at it again. Searching around the bottom of the barrel or garbage heap looking for a Justice and who did he find? A Radical who will be making decisions not on the Legality of the Constitution but on whether or not it will help out the Latino Communities. The new radical feelings judge just what America needs. What exactly does that mean? It means that the individuals ancestors that made America, a country supreme, will be losing more of their Constitutional Rights. That seems just fine with the Radicals that call themselves Liberals now inhabiting our neighborhoods. Soto Mayor has now changed her name to the Hollywood version, since she is now on the Hollywood stage to Soto Mai Ore, or whatever. Get use to it America we will now be killing more babies, making illegals legal, making Spanish the new American language, providing more aid to the worthless, and living like our slumdog neighbors. Just what our President, that you Radicals elected, wanted. I hope you Moderates and Liberals without brains that elected the Racist who has the perfect Con Artist Teleprompter Writer are now happy. Instead of improving our Country let's just keep running it into Hell. The Real American

Who are you talking about...."this woman?"....any person who thinks & says the what Sotomayer implies is a joke. She has no intention of enforcing the US Constitution.....60 percent of her cases in Court overturned...Outbased education! Here's her quote:

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life."
She's a liberal racist, so she's the perfect choice for the Left.
