    Unfortunately, smears do produce results. I was surprised to not read any Swift-Boat smears.

        Naming 10 nasty smear campaigns just isn't enough. It's a pretty interesting list none the less. But yes, we may not agree these are the 10 worst...perhaps 10 of the worst... what... 100 or so?

          Probably we never hear about most of them because the targets accept the blackmail of threatened smear campaigns. Dick Cheney using the NSA to spy on Republican Congressmen and threatening them if they resisted voting for "war powers" for the Iraq war comes to mind as a recent example.

          The good news is that polls continue to show that Americans are less and less inclined to be influenced by smear campaigns. In fact, votes tallied in opposition to smear campaigns have gone up in the last two elections.

          Time for Karl Rove to be sent out to pasture.
