That and until this century schooling was mostly segregated. Hence the abuse in Ireland; nuns taught girls and priests/monks taught boys. There was little opportunity for men to abuse girls. In some cases it was probably more associated with convenience than a homosexual preference. Whichever way or reason, it's horrific.
