Civil unions will not advance this year in Illinois. The legislative strategy there is just not strong enough yet to get this issue passed. In like manner, it does not seem likely that the cons will get enough votes to ban same-sex marriage. What bothers me most is that this issue should not be open to the voters. What if the existence of the Republican party were put to a vote? Would they be banned based on their minority status?

It is an instance of where the church is too far entwined into our governmental processes. Marriage is a secular civil agreement between two people. If the church doesn't want to recognize or denigrate a marriage between two individuals, for whatever reasons, that is their business, but they have no business in preventing an agreement between two individuals.

It is a slippery slope to other areas that the church can determine in the secular civil world. Who is allowed to have children, whether one can be buried or cremated, etc..........
