Why the medical argument?

It's been a very long time since I've smoked pot, but dang just legalize it already. With all the other 'legal' drugs like tobacco, alcohol and pharmaceuticals that are as bad or 'worse' than pot, why is it demonized like it is and look at as being the same as crack or the like?
It always amazes me that all the drunks in government have such a problem with a drug that is far less dangerous than the one they slam down every night then jump in their cars an put everyone else on the road in mortal danger.
