Obama says health care a must this year—or never »

Posted By Eagle_Eye 6 months, 1 week ago in Health & Fitness

President Barack Obama warned Thursday that if Congress doesn\'t deliver health care legislation by the end of the year the opportunity will be lost, a plea to political supporters to pressure lawmakers to act. If we don\'t get it done this year, we\'re not going to get it done, Obama told supporters by phone as he flew home on Air Force One from a West Coast fundraising trip.

Obama's political organization, Organizing for America, invited campaign volunteers to a midday conference call to describe a nationwide June 6 kickoff for its health care campaign. The president's message to his re-election campaign-in-waiting was simple: If volunteers don't pressure lawmakers to support the White House's goal on health care, Washington would drag its feet and nothing would change.

"The election in November, it didn't bring about change. It gave us an opportunity for change," Obama said.
The presidential plea came as lawmakers prepare for an aggressive schedule of work aimed at producing comprehensive health care overhaul bills in the House and Senate by August.
Committee hearings — and soon thereafter votes — will start next week, as soon as lawmakers return to Washington from a weeklong recess. Many members of Congress spent the break holding town hall meetings and other forums with their constituents about health care, even as opponents and supporters of Obama's plans ramped up television and radio ads for and against.

"I think the status quo is unacceptable and that we've got to get it done this year," Obama repeated, ginning up his supporters for a door-to-door and phone-to-phone canvass similar to his presidential campaign.

I certainly hope that this issue will be addressed fairly, but I have no doubt that the profiteers will try to do their best to keep Universal Health Care for All Americans from happening like they did when Hillary Clinton tried to get this for our country.

It is truly a shame that one of the richest countries on earth can’t provide health care for it’s citizens. The main reason is all the lies that have been fed to your gullible electorate.

It is completely amazing that the conservatives in your country have managed to make your citizens vote against their best interests for so many years.

As it stands now anyone regardless of citizenship can get emergency health care at any hospital,so we are halfway there and need to fix the system for everyone, all must chip in pharmaceutical companies, doctors, and insurance carriers,we must also pay attention to all who oppose the issue!

    Thanks EE.

This is the challenge that will make or break this presidency and the prospect of rebuilding a strong middle class in this country.

What concerns me the most are the Senate Democrats and some reps in Congress who have active relations with the insurance lobbyists. Money and promises are already passing under the table and most of us know that.

I think it is imperative for the American electorate to make it crystal clear that if their Senators and representatives make any concessions that sell out their constituents in favor of a profit oriented "compromise", then they will definitely not elect that "public servant" to return to Washington again. Nothing short of that demand must be communicated to each and every Democrat in Washington.

This is one of the most important challenges that middle class and poor Americans are facing. The time for a non profit making health care program that any American can use to access adequate health care is long overdue.

Sitting on my desk beside my computer are pages of notes and contacts that I plan on using as this struggle commences. To prevent Democrats from betraying Obama's health care proposal, it will require the energy and participation of millions of Americans. The internet is going to be the battleground for this push.

It is up to us to let our Senators and representatives know that we will not tolerate any of their attempts to sell us out to appease their insurance lobbyists. It is really up to us.

I concur! Make it never...stop non-citizens from using the hospitals for free. Get rid of Medicaid so people can work to pay. Eat right, get plenty of exercise & drink H2O, take two
aspirin....call me in the AM. Besides I want the same retirement pension & healthcare benefits Congress, Feds, Stateworkers teachers, cops, firepersons, auto workers enjoy...

One of the major hidden benefits of a system like ours is prevention. Because it costs us nothing for us to visit our doctors, most of us go at least once a year for a check up. Because of that many potentially serious problems are nipped in the bud.

Our law makers need someone in the wings making laws regarding them, THEN something would get done for the rest of the people in this country. They don't care about the rest of us, they have a retirement system that's unsurpassed by any other in the nation.. Every one of them that fights this needs to be voted out in their next elections, and not reelected when they run again.

    Eagle_Eye,

Yes, "...the opportunity will be lost..." because people are waking-up to the fact that Obama hasn't the foggiest idea of what the heck he's doing. THUS, the RUSH!

LISTEN --- I can hear "THE ONE" exhorting his horde: "Hurry, my Loyal Lemmings, leap of off the "National Health Care Cliff" before you wake from your collective trance and realize I haven't a CLUE!"

My Fellow Cry Baby Americans: Give me, give me, give me, Mr. Government, give me food stamps, welfare, public assistance, police protection, Health Care. That's the New American People plus Illegal Aliens. Get a Job, Get your own Health Insurance, Get your own Doctor, Get a Competitive Pharmacy, Get up off your Lazy Butts and quit depending on the Federal Government and a Handout President to make life more comfortable. This Country was not founded on Government Give Me Programs, it was founded on hard working foreigners who legally came to this Country for a better way of life and were willing to work hard and earn an American Citizenship without getting it handed to them on a Silver Platter. The foreigners who come to this Country now just want a free ride they enter this Country illegally, live off our system, drain our finances and give nothing back, in tax revenue. Then along with them we have the 60s lay abouts that were part of the free love, free ride generation, (Hippies, Druggies, Deserters,(Canadian Type) and Live off the Parents hard work groups that have been sucking everything they can get out of the Charity Programs. Time to get rid of all Help the Useless Programs and get back to the Hard Working Earn Your Own Way America. The President lives big, talks big, wants to give away big but his only interest is being big in the Spotlight. By the way does anyone have any idea where all the money (Trillions)went and to what programs in order to stimulate the non stimulated economy? I say it is being Stockpiled, Embezzled, Stashed in our Administrations Secret Coffers. One day it will all come to light. Not to late hopefully. We need a Stimulus Investigation. The Real American

There are too many leaks in the system. Way too much of our healthcare dollars ends up in the hands of lawyers and insurance companies. We could easily provide healthcare to everyone and have money left over by removing lawyers and insurance companies, but that will never happen.

One small question.....has universal healthcare worked in any country the size of the United States? I would think we would have a problem with the number of doctors needed and what about the shortage of nurses that is already a problem. I would really be concerned about the quality of care that would be provided.

Frankly after Dubya's spending spree of 5 trillion or so.. I'd like to actually get something for my money.

I'm currently paying 16 k annually on health care for myself and my wife and i'd like to think that Obama can in fact do it for less. The repugs inflated figures don't scare me as they are known for their creative accounting..

I recently had orthroscopic surgery on my knee. I was in by 7 and out by 12 and the bill was $10,000. Something is very wrong with that picture.

Eagle_Eye:Lets have the president, and the legislators ,with a mix of doctors, hospitals, and some of the smarter working people sit down and put something together,Right now all we have is the logo.I haven't heard a single suggestion that will cover all people that won't totally destroy what we have now.John McCain said in the campaign to treat all citizens the same, that everyone would pay for health care insurance with after after tax income, and use that two hundred billion dollars
a year to help the uninsured.Obama almost had a baby when that showed up on his teleprompter, and shot it down called McCain mean spirited. How about the mean old employer's who took these countless billions off their bottom line for tax purposes-es .This money should have been a part of the employees income.Oops wait a minute,Obama says now that was put on my teleprompter ,by either by Sarah Palin,or the former court jester Joe Biden.Shouldn't have been there.

From an email sent to me from Senator Sanders

        "States as Laboratories

Sanders has introduced legislation authorizing grants for states to create universal health care pilot programs. "The quickest route toward a national health care program will be when individual states go forward and demonstrate that universal and non-profit health care works, and that it is the cost-effective and moral thing to do," said Sanders. Under his legislation, five states selected for the pilot program would win grants to carry out five-year demonstration projects."

Some one has finally realized the importance of making health care "Non-Profit". This should also be done with the drug industry...no one should profit off of peoples health or disease, it is a matter of life or death not profit or loss.

          One more time:
My husband and I are on medicare.
Medicare takes $1,156.80 out of EACH of our Social security checks each year,
and $276 out of EACH of checks for drugs.

On top of that we pay a total of almost $5,000 in insurance a year to cover what medicare does NOT cover.

          There is NO family plan.

We are FORCED to take medicare or the supplemental insurance will not cover anything.

So, how much do you think "government" insurance would cost a family of 4??

And, most likely those who do not have insurance have larger families.

How much will it cost them?????

THINK before you jump to conclusions.

No Healthcare in America. Bullsh*t. Ask any poor white person or Hispanic, or black and they'll tell ya how to get free Health care. In My business I'm in the Emergency room of every hospital in the Carolinas. What do I see, I see Escalades,$40,000 pickup truck, Beamers, tricked out street racers, you name it. They pull up to the ER and their ladies get out, load the baby in a $300.00 stroller use there Prada shoes to carry them in for free treatment of their childs earache. These same people then go to the store touse there foodstamps This is a little extreme but situations similar to this happen several times a day.every day. the first thing they seem to learn is the"Hospital bill of rights" It states they will not deny medical services to anyone in need> ER's don't have Polish, or italian or german interpreters, but they sure as dickens have Spanish. Health and social services and foods stamp offices are loaded with people who have a real need for their services but also loaded with Scam artist. If we could eliminate the Fraud and take care of the ones in real need we wouldn't have a healthcare crisis.
I hear a familiar refrain from Mr. Obama, who says we need to
social medicine now. Hell, we already have it. Go to the Doctors and you won't see a Physician, you'll see a PA (Physicians assistant)which pays about 60 grand a year with
less just a couple of yrs special training. You have to be referred to a medical specialist before you actually see a Physican.
How many times have you driven by what we call Mill houses (Small houses or shacks)and see brand new high dollar vehicles
and Satellite dishes in the yard.

The urgency for this new (and not necessarily better)Health care system is another federal scam like the TARP money they needed right away. They borrowed 800 billion dollars to finance the Tarp and havent spent half of it to date. Bet your sweet Ass that the 73 billion in new foreign aide that was just committed is being financed with TARP Money "Charity begins at home" Mr. O. The Federal governemt has taken Trillions of dollars out of the Social Security Trust Fund for future claims and these loans are guaranteed by a Piece of paper in Parkersburg, W. Va. No physical assets were used to guarantee repayment it was secured with Faitn and Trust. The odds are that this will never be repaid due to financial skulldugery. It was our money, for our retirement paid for by us and our employers, and used to finance the federal government. It looks like we got taxed twice, and it was approved by Congress. (Damn, I luv it when I go one a rant)
