Obama says health care a must this year—or never »
Posted By Eagle_Eye 6 months, 1 week ago in Health & FitnessPresident Barack Obama warned Thursday that if Congress doesn\'t deliver health care legislation by the end of the year the opportunity will be lost, a plea to political supporters to pressure lawmakers to act. If we don\'t get it done this year, we\'re not going to get it done, Obama told supporters by phone as he flew home on Air Force One from a West Coast fundraising trip.
Obama's political organization, Organizing for America, invited campaign volunteers to a midday conference call to describe a nationwide June 6 kickoff for its health care campaign. The president's message to his re-election campaign-in-waiting was simple: If volunteers don't pressure lawmakers to support the White House's goal on health care, Washington would drag its feet and nothing would change.
"The election in November, it didn't bring about change. It gave us an opportunity for change," Obama said.
The presidential plea came as lawmakers prepare for an aggressive schedule of work aimed at producing comprehensive health care overhaul bills in the House and Senate by August.
Committee hearings — and soon thereafter votes — will start next week, as soon as lawmakers return to Washington from a weeklong recess. Many members of Congress spent the break holding town hall meetings and other forums with their constituents about health care, even as opponents and supporters of Obama's plans ramped up television and radio ads for and against.
"I think the status quo is unacceptable and that we've got to get it done this year," Obama repeated, ginning up his supporters for a door-to-door and phone-to-phone canvass similar to his presidential campaign.

I certainly hope that this issue will be addressed fairly, but I have no doubt that the profiteers will try to do their best to keep Universal Health Care for All Americans from happening like they did when Hillary Clinton tried to get this for our country.

The lack of a comprehensive solution to the Health Care mess has truly been a 'millstone' around the neck of our economy for dozens of years.
In fact, it's entirely probable that our nation's auto companies could have remained competitive with the Japanese and German auto companies.
Look, GM spends $17 MILLION a year on VIAGRA ... as part of their Company sponsored Health Plan.
More than likely, their line on their profit/loss chart would have been pointing straight up ... if they didn't spend so much keeping their employees and retirees pointing straight up.

You mean that a $1.5 trillion is not too much? That was the number tossed around at a discussion that Obama was involved in. Cheap at the cost right? Move on down and join the people who will have to handle that burden. That is in addition to the $1.8 trillion deficit this year. It will also be in addition to the $1 trillion deficit the following years. No big deal is it. You are sick in the head trying to give us that awful system you have. 5 million people without doctors and 4 months to get to a doctor. And you brag about that. I can see my doctor within days if not sick and if sick the same day. Take your system and shove it.

No, chuck-the-canuck, the reason "...one of the richest countries on earth can't provide (SOCIALIST) health care for its citizens." is something called the United States Constitution, something you are apparently ignorant of, being a "canuck".

Your concept is wrong. Just chip in. At the number of $1.5 trillion that was discussed with Obama it is roughly $5,000 per person. Family of 4 that is over $20,000. That is not just chipping in.

Where did he get that ludicrous number of $2.5 trillion today? That is $8,333 per person and over $33,000 per family of 4. Doesn't anybody run the numbers?

This is the challenge that will make or break this presidency and the prospect of rebuilding a strong middle class in this country.
What concerns me the most are the Senate Democrats and some reps in Congress who have active relations with the insurance lobbyists. Money and promises are already passing under the table and most of us know that.
I think it is imperative for the American electorate to make it crystal clear that if their Senators and representatives make any concessions that sell out their constituents in favor of a profit oriented "compromise", then they will definitely not elect that "public servant" to return to Washington again. Nothing short of that demand must be communicated to each and every Democrat in Washington.
This is one of the most important challenges that middle class and poor Americans are facing. The time for a non profit making health care program that any American can use to access adequate health care is long overdue.
Sitting on my desk beside my computer are pages of notes and contacts that I plan on using as this struggle commences. To prevent Democrats from betraying Obama's health care proposal, it will require the energy and participation of millions of Americans. The internet is going to be the battleground for this push.
It is up to us to let our Senators and representatives know that we will not tolerate any of their attempts to sell us out to appease their insurance lobbyists. It is really up to us.-

So Spade caller you believe that the average family of 4 pays over $33,333 today. That number is low because it does not include many who do not pay into the system.
Reply
You think that the family of 4 should now pay over $20,000 as their share of this boondoggle in extra taxes. Such a nice guy you are. Run the numbers and prove me wrong. I used a population of 300,000,000 to get the number. There are 138,000,000 taxpayers and that means $10,870 per tax payer. 2 tax payers in a family is $21,,740. Cheap at the price right Spadecaller.
You libs only hear the rant and the big numbers and NEVER think about how it is really going to be paid for. This would be a deficit spending forever. 1.5 trillion every year in addition to the $1 trillion that the CBO says will be there forever with the Obama budget. That is a $2.5 trillion deficit forever. That will kill our ability to borrow. The alternative is to crank up the printing presses and then the money will be worthless. Spadecaller thinks this is a great idea. There are not enough rich people in this country to pay for a fraction of this insanity of spending that Obama is embarked on.

One of the major hidden benefits of a system like ours is prevention. Because it costs us nothing for us to visit our doctors, most of us go at least once a year for a check up. Because of that many potentially serious problems are nipped in the bud.

Chuck -- Doncha think prevention is a little oversold? I'm an engineer by profession; so I've lived my whole working life with the idea that it's better to design things so that problems don't happen than it is to repair them when they do happen. So I am simpatico with the theory behind prevention. But the human body is not a piece of process equipment. Yeah, there are certain things we all should be doing-- eating properly (whatever that is), exercising, not smoking, etc. I guess the question I have is whether all these things we "should do" actually prevent anything or are just feel-good things. If it's the latter (my gut feeling is in that direction), then lots of people are fooling themselves.
Reply
I really don't know where this health care reform will or should end up. But if it ends up based on the premise that prevention is a major component, I have a sinking feeling that we'll all end up the worse for it.

There will never be a better time than the PRESENT.
Modern Republican Politicians are so opposed to Health Care ... they will do litterally ANTYHING to stop it.
There is considerable agreement that the reason Ronald Reagan began spending vast quantities of money in his second term was to come as close to bankrupting our nation so that we would NEVER be able to afford Health Care for Americans.
In just the same way ... there is considerable agreement that George W. Bush allowed our nation to nearly collapse so that our nation could NEVER afford Health Care for Americans.
As long as this issue remains unresolved ... future Republican administrations will apply similar tactics of economic catastrophe to prevent a Health Care solution. Such is their grip on their Ideology.
President Obama realizes that a solution MUST be made ... not only for the good of millions of Americans ... not only for our economic survival ... but as a preventative measure against future Republican sabotage ... if I can use that word without too many unintended overtones.

Whats makes you think the government can do anything "for less"? Can you name one program, benefit or project that we pay for that actually costs less than projected. Can you name any government function that isn't a bloated political bureaucracy staffed with political appointees where we aren't paying twice the cost for half the value? How long did you wait for your surgery? Did you have a choice of doctor and surgeon? Do you think it will be the same when some bureaucrat bean counter has his/her fingers wrapped around your fate.

I pay the same 16k annually for my medical coverage and the same for my employees, and that's how it should be. Everyone gets the same full coverage, and everyone here uses it and is appreciative of the benefit. I'm paying my share for the people I'm responsible for, and I pay social security and medicare taxes into the system with no say as to where or how its spent, because thats the rules. How much more do expect me to pay so that you can pay less for your care? It has to come from somewhere, and the only target is the private sector, because government is only capable of spending our money, not creating it.
50 million people without health care, (is that the current lib/dem talking point, up from 38m, 40m, 45m during the campaign) is not the same when you take out x million for people that choose not to pay for care, y million people that are subsidized even though they can afford it, and z million for people here illegally ,draining the system and burying the states in unreimbursed medical costs. Look past your snide little remarks and cutsie names and think about what it costs to run a medical business, or any business for that matter. Socialize the whole mess, and thats' exactly what you will have, a bigger mess than you are complaining about now. repugs indeed....Grow up and be honest with yourself. This administration will spend every dollar they can confiscate from us, and they want to do it as quickly as possible before we catch on the sleight-of-hand they brain washed you with.

"States as Laboratories
Sanders has introduced legislation authorizing grants for states to create universal health care pilot programs. "The quickest route toward a national health care program will be when individual states go forward and demonstrate that universal and non-profit health care works, and that it is the cost-effective and moral thing to do," said Sanders. Under his legislation, five states selected for the pilot program would win grants to carry out five-year demonstration projects."
Some one has finally realized the importance of making health care "Non-Profit". This should also be done with the drug industry...no one should profit off of peoples health or disease, it is a matter of life or death not profit or loss. -

Medicare takes $1,156.80 out of EACH of our Social security checks each year,
and $276 out of EACH of checks for drugs.
On top of that we pay a total of almost $5,000 in insurance a year to cover what medicare does NOT cover.
There is NO family plan.
We are FORCED to take medicare or the supplemental insurance will not cover anything.
So, how much do you think "government" insurance would cost a family of 4??
And, most likely those who do not have insurance have larger families.
How much will it cost them?????

No Healthcare in America. Bullsh*t. Ask any poor white person or Hispanic, or black and they'll tell ya how to get free Health care. In My business I'm in the Emergency room of every hospital in the Carolinas. What do I see, I see Escalades,$40,000 pickup truck, Beamers, tricked out street racers, you name it. They pull up to the ER and their ladies get out, load the baby in a $300.00 stroller use there Prada shoes to carry them in for free treatment of their childs earache. These same people then go to the store touse there foodstamps This is a little extreme but situations similar to this happen several times a day.every day. the first thing they seem to learn is the"Hospital bill of rights" It states they will not deny medical services to anyone in need> ER's don't have Polish, or italian or german interpreters, but they sure as dickens have Spanish. Health and social services and foods stamp offices are loaded with people who have a real need for their services but also loaded with Scam artist. If we could eliminate the Fraud and take care of the ones in real need we wouldn't have a healthcare crisis.

I hear a familiar refrain from Mr. Obama, who says we need to
social medicine now. Hell, we already have it. Go to the Doctors and you won't see a Physician, you'll see a PA (Physicians assistant)which pays about 60 grand a year with
less just a couple of yrs special training. You have to be referred to a medical specialist before you actually see a Physican.
How many times have you driven by what we call Mill houses (Small houses or shacks)and see brand new high dollar vehicles
and Satellite dishes in the yard.
The urgency for this new (and not necessarily better)Health care system is another federal scam like the TARP money they needed right away. They borrowed 800 billion dollars to finance the Tarp and havent spent half of it to date. Bet your sweet Ass that the 73 billion in new foreign aide that was just committed is being financed with TARP Money "Charity begins at home" Mr. O. The Federal governemt has taken Trillions of dollars out of the Social Security Trust Fund for future claims and these loans are guaranteed by a Piece of paper in Parkersburg, W. Va. No physical assets were used to guarantee repayment it was secured with Faitn and Trust. The odds are that this will never be repaid due to financial skulldugery. It was our money, for our retirement paid for by us and our employers, and used to finance the federal government. It looks like we got taxed twice, and it was approved by Congress. (Damn, I luv it when I go one a rant)
