cnn's handling of the story was equally brutal.

we found porn! profane grafitti!! ... and, omg... a needle! well how about that huh? only depraved homeless people j*rk off. only homeless people swear.... it's not like some kids with spray cans arrived long before they were ever there. that's just a stage kids go through. or that actors are paid millions per hollywood movie to say "f u c k" several times in 90 minutes. that's entertainment and we're happy to good money to see and hear it. oh,and how about that needle? tsk, tsk, tsk..... too bad if someone's diabetic :|
this fake condescending commercial television "morality" disgusts me

Don't worry - the city of LA will soon renovate the cave & yuppies will be flocking in at $4000 a month

Same thing happenned in NY's East Village home of the hippies & squatters in the 60's & 70's - now try to rent a walk-up in a tenement for less than $2-3000 a month
I think the homeless are the true advent-garde-

great line ace, mind if i use it? make me think of jack kerouac and the beat generation, predecessors of the hippies.
the process of hegemony, the dominant ideology, absorbs society's aberrations and incongruities and diffuses them. what once represents rebellion, subversion or in some way a threat to the mainstream, the outsiders and the subcultures, soon becomes next month's cover of vogue, a superficial moment trivialized into little more than fashion.
and yet they always represent a sense of the "real" or connectedness with some kind of truth that the sanitized who live in hegemony's comfort zones yearn to connect with but never dare except vicariously. thus the escalation of real estate prices. such history makes for light conversation at dinner parties, usually with this month's edition of vogue somewhere over on the coffee table

I am also saddened by the video, and wanted to point out something glaring I have not seen anyone comment on....at 1:30 in the video, a Caltrans worker clearly picks up an American Flag, and tosses it into a garbage bag....how does one justify that?

OK, lets talk about that.

A Caltrans worker treats an American flag as garbage, while the entire segment is about American people treated by their government and their fellow Americans as garbage.
I am more offended by the latter than the former.

Now there will be people with no shelter and CNN coverage appears to want us all to applaud. It is truly disgusting,CNN's coverage that is,not the people with nowhere to sleep.

The richest nation on Earth ,shows that wealth and heart are two very different things.Like as already been said in this thread,"there are many lower income families, that are just a couple of pay cheques, away from being homeless".It would be heartening, but surprising to see La's authorities give these people some hind of alternative.-

You have pointed out a little of what is wrong with the US today. When did "society=government" happen. It should be society's problem to tackle, not government's.
Reply
Yet, like the Roman Empire, we have started down the slippery slope of letting government address society's ills. Putting government in charge of correcting these ill's only promotes government's growth and their intrusion into all our lives. Bureaucrat's only purpose in life is to increase their power and scope. Even the most dedicated "public servants" will ultimately succumb to this. Government will find new problems to solve each and every day until we are basically controlled like in the book "1984".
This is the problem I have with the current liberal philosophy. It transfers too much power from society to the government. A real liberal would be pushing for both faith-based and non-faith-based non-governmental groups to be taking care of these kinds of problems and leave the government out it. Pushing for government involvement is just an easy way to abdicate individual responsibility.
Just like the Roman Empire, we are proceeding down the path where a US citizen is too valuable and important to require them to deal with these problems directly. I can't wait until we begin to see government begin to hire mercenaries (think Blackwater) to take care of our military needs. We will have followed the Roman Empire's path to destruction.

Oh my god! Homeless people are so gross. A bunch of crazy, perverted drug addicts, that's what they are. I think the reason they choose to live like that is so they don't have to pay taxes. I almost hit one with my BMW, how dare he try to wipe my windshield with that filthy shirt of his.
PESSIMISM:
Does anyone else think that the American homeless class is about to become better educated, better skilled, and better armed?
OPTIMISM:
Did everyone notice the big DOINK on the reporters forehead at the end? Serves the smug little bastard right. Do unto others... -

You should all be stricken from the face of the Earth the way you talk about Homeless people . I hope you with the BMW wind up in the Ranks They would probably put me in Jail if I put what I thought about you on here Like they say what goes around comes around. the way this economy is going Im willing to bet that there will be about 10,000 more homeless people among the ranks within the next 3 years.

This is the America we live in...so many of us are "untouched" by this issue in our daily lives, we sometimes overlook the state of poverty here. We spend so much time and money in other countries that the suffering here tends to be overlooked or worse yet discounted as in "This is America< get a job." Yeah, good luck with that. A good many of these people are mentally ill, who's there to help them? The penal system is not equipt to handle them and the health care available is squat....pathetic and sad,so very sad....
