This holiday, observed in many countries on various days throughout the year, originated at the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. Though it is uncertain why China chose June 1 to celebrate the occasion, some speculate that it commemorates the day that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, which also coincided with the conference in Geneva.
