On June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War between Israel and
the Arab States, Israeli fighter planes and
torpedo boats attacked the U.S. Navy intelligence ship Liberty for 90 minutes in international waters, following several hours of low-level reconnaissance flights by Israeli aircraft.  In the incident, 34 American servicemen were killed and
171 more wounded.

9th January 2004 affidavit of U.S. Navy Captain Ward Boston:

"The evidence was clear. Both Adm. Kidd and I believed with certainty that this attack ... was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew.... Not only did the Israelis attack the ship with napalm, gunfire, and missiles, Israeli torpedo boats machine-gunned three lifeboats that had been launched in an attempt by the crew to save the most seriously wounded -- a war crime...."

Regarding a 'USS Liberty Part II', 2008 comments from
Admiral Mike Mullen - now Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
      Staff:
American Free Press quoted Adm. Mullen as saying that it is very 'important' at this time that 'history not repeat itself', referring to increasing speculation that Israel might stage another such scenario to push the US into a war with Iran.

Under the circumstances, it's hard to believe it was a "mistake". Coupled with Israel being caught spying on US intelligence more than once, & their continuing to build 'settlements' despite objections, I have to wonder why we baby them. Is it only because of their strategic location in the ME, & their ability to keep the Arabs under control militarily? Rhetorical.

James M. Ennes,Jr. enlisted in the Navy at the age of seventeen
during the Korean War. He was serving on the USS Liberty on
          June 8th 1967.
The website linked below and maintained by Mr.Ennes has a link
to some of the best photos of the USS Liberty. Click on PHOTOS
and MAPS on the right side of the home page.
Any old Navy guy will cringe at the photo of the torpedo
damage. 25 - TWENTY-FIVE - of our sailors lost their lives
in that cramped crushed hollow from Hell!

I'm sure Israel would not deliberately attack a friend. They said it was an accident. Our government accepted it. Leave it alone!!

Well a first time might be accepted as an accident but if there was a 2nd time then U retaliate. Since there has been no 2nd time I'd say leave it alone for now.

I was on duty in the Med during the attack on the Liberty. The attack was a false flag operation by Israel with full knowledge of the White house. Us carriers in the area were aware of the attack and were told not to respond to the Liberty's distress calls. I was later stationed with a man who was on the Liberty when attacked and he knew that distress calls had been sent out and that there was no response from nearby US war ships.

Although Captain McGonagle was awarded the Congressional Medal
of Honor for his heroism in saving the ship and bringing it back to safety, senior White House officials decided to keep the occasion as quiet as possible. Because the medal, the nation's highest honor, is only rarely awarded, it is almost always presented by the president in a high-profile White House ceremony.
But McGonagle's award was given by the secretary of the Navy in a low-profile, hastily arranged gathering at the Washington Navy Yard, a scrappy base on the banks of the smelly Anacostia River.
