President Obama on Tuesday affirmed his support for the creation of a government-sponsored health insurance plan, but he acknowledged that such a plan would sharply reduce the chances for Republican support of legislation to overhaul the health care system, Democratic senators said.

"To help control costs, the administration indicated support on Tuesday for a proposal to strengthen a federal panel that recommends how much Medicare should pay doctors, hospitals, nursing homes and other health care providers.

Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, Democrat of West Virginia, recently introduced a bill that would expand the role of the panel, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, and give its recommendations the force of law. Senators said Mr. Obama and his aides had expressed general support for such a change, which would establish the panel as an independent rate-setting body in the executive branch.

Several senators said Mr. Obama had conveyed a sense of urgency and spoken emphatically about the importance of revamping the health care system in a way that would reduce costs.

“The president made clear that history will judge us by whether this bill controls health costs,” said Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon."

Sad that the QUALITY of health care is not a goal.

A national plan that will compete with private plans will kill all private plans and the majority of us have employer sponsored plans. Don't you think that if our private plans are taxed, and you can be sure of this, that we'd opt out of something that was a negotiated right and then pay the national premium? The end result? The government taking over another very large segment of our economy, and the benefit? Higher health care costs! Look at the Medicare disaster in terms of cost. Why don't we make the same effort to make health care affordable to everyone by writing in tax incentives to those who work and pay taxes? And for those who don't work, they already have Medicaid. Improve upon that if you will. Paying higher taxes for a government sponsored program which will have no accountability and putting a "rush on it" is how we're getting nothing for all the stimulus money we've wasted so far. The entity to be saved only ends up filing for bankruptcy.

The only reason to "hurry up" is to pass some mega legislation without reading it and ensuring that we don't find out what is being voted upon. Why the urgency? The Democrats may lose their strangle hold on congress and then their opportunity will be lost.

Forcing this through without due process will be a massive mistake, maybe the most damaging in American history.

A lot like the stimulus bill was forced through with NO ONE reading the bill.

i zeroed in this sentence, too.

          rther than just:

“The president made clear that history will judge us by whether this bill controls health costs,” said Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon."

it should read: "the president made clear that history will judge us by whether this bill controls health care costs OR NOT"

its one thing to sit down and play poker for fun, but its not so much fun when you are dicking with the health care system, just because you can. especially if you have no idea what's going happen next.

this 'Dukes Of Hazzard' idea that you can just speed up and make the jump when we aren't sure how deep the hole is underneath us, seems might destructive.

i really like how gov't is going to determine how much doctors nurses et al are going to get paid. who determines what the market rates will be?

Doctors like the patient care file system they have. If they wanted more they would have it. They maintain control of it, can keep notes they might not want the patient to see.

A central data base could not and will not happen. If it does, it will be hacked and our information will be vulnerable to anyone.

And this is what is supposed to create all the savings that will pay for this fiasco. My reps will vote no ...

Why are we reacting so fast with so many socialist programs? This is very reminiscent of the rise of fascism in Italy or Communists of Russia.

I'm glad I quit smoking cigarettes. Do you think he'll increase the taxes on alcohol?
