    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder, or dyssomnia. The condition is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times such as work, school or jury duty. A narcoleptic will most probably experience disturbed nocturnal sleep, which is often confused with insomnia, and disordered REM, or rapid eye movement, sleep.ref:http://www.web-us.com/brainwavesfunction...

This too can be induced by the ear during the night...as the ear hears and the brain reacts...in a state where the individual is experiencing beta patterns in the brain synapses or the junction between two neurons (axon-to-dendrite) or between a neuron and a muscle; "nerve impulses cross a synapse through the action of ...

This can be done too, like I pointed out in other comments, by Ewacs (EWACS Early Warning And Control System (Israeli predecessor to AWACS) )Electronic warfare (EW) refers to any action involving the use of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) or directed energy (DE) to control the EMS or to attack the enemy. EW includes three major subdivisions: electronic attack (EA), Electronic Protect (EP), and electronic warfare support (ES). The purpose of EW is to deny the opponent an advantage in the EMS and ensure friendly unimpeded access to the EM spectrum portion of the information environment. EW can be applied from air, sea, land, and space by manned and unmanned systems.[1]

"It may be a compensatory mechanism to keep you alive" I would tend to think this is true, since a person with sleep apnea, tho they always seem to be tired and appear to sleep a lot, are not really sleeping at all, their body is working hard to breathe, to function. They don't receive the same benefits of sleep that normal sleep provides, healing the body etc...so in a sense they are slowly dying.

Many people do not realize they have sleep apnea, usually it is a spouse that complains about snoring or that they stop breathing and gasp etc... then getting that person to see a Dr about it is another struggle usually. I know several people who have significantly benefited from sleep study and then taking measures to help themselves. It's just not a matter of annoying snoring, it can be life threatening.

Last year at this time I was suffering from cognitive impairment that cost me my job. I was confused at first as to why I was layed off but my wife insisted it was because I was always forgetting things. I went to my Dr and he put me in touch with a neurologist who put me in a sleep lab. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I now have a CPAP machine that I use every night and my cognitive impairment has greatly improved, although I never got my job back.
