An important topic that deserves to be expanded upon. It's an important topic for the main reason that (1) father's continued involvement with his children after divorce is a most important predictor of later adjustment and success for children. Dads are important. It's also important, of course, because of (2) Dad's own adjustment and coping with the changes after divorce. The difficulties are that these two main areas intersect in difficult ways. While we all "know" (intellectually) that separating our needs as parents from those of the children is very important, in real life it's a tangled and emotionally difficult web. In the heat of divorce "doing what's best for the children," "doing what's right," "only being fair," etc. are statements that so often mix-up lots of emotions into quite the stew.

It helps to talk things through with others, with other parents and friends, and perhaps with counselors who can give a more dispassionate perspective. This is often harder for men. How can we encourage it?
