This speech will be a huge part of the news on this day as the media runs the various clips throughout the day. I have already heard several conservative commentators this morning call this speech nothing more than a continuation of Obama's 'Apology Tour'.

he calls for truth, peace, restraint, and ostricizing of the extremists by Muslims. He also calls for the Palestinians to stop using anti-semetic language and violence while continuing to demand their right to sovereignty. He also calls for the Israelis to stop building settlements and talk rationally with the Palestinians. And he says there is no reason Islam and the west can't get along, but don't expect us to quit on our commitments in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Sounds pretty good to me. I expect it will sound pretty good to moderates around the world. I also expect that no matter what he said it would sound bad to extremists around the world.-

does it? i guess such minor matters as the wholesale destruction of muslim nations should be easy to overlook. just like iraq. the thing is you make it all sound a bit like moses come down from the mountain top.... again (hope that doesn't offend anyone's religious/ethnic sensibilities).
the crux is that we're not laying down our wish list for what we expect of them (bush did that already for 8 years) but that we are seeking to rebuild mutual respect because we've done some things wrong as well, yes?
""I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect."

Your racism is eclipsed only by your ignorance. Your ignorance is eclipsed by your arrogance. You and your pack of filthy swine racists do not represent the republican party, or anybody in this great country, this melting pot.

You and your inbred extremist terrorist right wing cells, are what is wrong with this country.

Obama is an idiot. That speech shows his ignorance of the world of Islam. Very sad.
Reply
We have had our first jihadist incident in the US killing a soldier and the president said he was sad. An abortionist was killed and he is outraged. This also says something about his thinking.-

And now, the evangelical terrorist cell speaks up, there in his basement, reading his racist hate websites, thumping his bible.

A step in the right direction.

Just a step but these things take time!
Interesting that some on the Right would spin it as an 'Apology'.
Apparently, no room for compromise in their twisted, narrow-minded little worldview.
Which is why they will continue to get their collective asses kicked at the polls! -

Brilliant speech, inspiring to anyone not burned up by racism and cynicism and religious brainwashing.
Reply
Its a litmus test. Those who don't like it are inevitably racists, tribalists and hatemongers.
Of course, the right wing terrorist cells of the repug party of cons, the KKK in their wrinkled white skin and hoods, they think its apology, but actually its brilliant diplomacy.
The same people who raped the economy and profited from the murder of 4000 soldiers, raping the enviroment, these swine terrorists are the same folks who call this apology.
They would rather send your children to die in war or suffocate on their pollution than ever do anything for this country. They are the scum of the earth.-

Although I don't know how accurate your figures are ( they seem to reflect the ones I saw concerning Hispanics) , the Christian numbers are on the decline not from Islam but from people losing faith. They have been disappointed and seen the hypocrisy not only in the practice of the professed believers but in the doctrine. Converts make up about 50% of the Muslims in the US.
Reply
I would suspect that amongst converts to another religion in America, Islam is definitely on the top of the list. It serves Christians bad when they try to spread Islamaphobia and then their people research to "learn their enemies", they find out all the information that the hard core Bible flingers say is not true. Especially amongst Caucasian Americans. Yes, you can try to exploit the true actions of Muslims, but they are neutralized by all the church scandals and problems at home simply because of human nature.
Look at all the "girls next door" with veils on on youtube and your old baseball and army buddies sporting beards now.as well on there. Lies only take you so far. Eventually they turn on you.
All my point, Christians decline will not be because of an "Islamic" invasion coming with green card bearers and I have not heard of Pakistan inventing a "conversion" bomb. Christians are their own worst enemy. Non-Jesus like behavior and hypocrisy put a mud of your face that even would turn a mother sow away from her own offspring.

Barack Obama has a talent to reach hands. His sensitive rhetoric is so different from the "shock and awe" of the Bush administration that a new beginning in the relations to the Muslim world really seems possible to me. He has also shown that he isn´t blind for the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and his critique on Israel´s settlement politics was clearer than every President before him had uttered. He clearly voted for a two-state-solution, which I hold for the only possibility to bring peace back into this region. I hope that America will go on taking the chance of having a President with Islamic roots, a fact that could be a massage of its own to the Muslim world!
