      They've tried all sorts of ways; none successful, which is why they had to move the town. I sometimes wonder what has kept the fire from spreading down the hill to Ashland. The whole area is literally honeycombed with mines, many nominally owned by long extinct companies.

      Centralia is only about 20 miles from my home town. I've been "through" it often, the last time about a year ago. I remember it from the early 1960's, a little coal town; and the washboard SR61 coming down to it. Now the road has been relocated around the deserted part of town, which is almost all of it.
