Comments for Powerful Baptist Pastor Prays for Obama's Death - Audio »
Posted By metavirus 6 months, 1 week ago in ReligionThe Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest denomination, has been embarrassed by the comments of the Rev. Wiley Drake, a former officer in the convention, who said he is praying for the death of the president.
Drake, a former SBC vice president who ran for president of the organization last year, said in a recent interview on Fox News Radio: "I am asking God to enforce imprecatory prayers that are throughout the Scripture that would cause [Obama's] death."

There would have TO BE A GOD before such an entity could strike at anybody. I have been deep into the 2nd Millenia BC researching the origins of religion In Babylon and Mesopotamia. Nothing has changed in all that time except for the names of the Gods that are worshipped. When is humanity ever going to break these bonds? Why are so many so weak?

I guess it kind of s-cks to know that we are on our own and that fate may intervene at a moments noticev yet it is the stark reality. I have always said it is the hubric nature of man to assign himself such great importance. But once the electrical impulses cease to exist in your brain you will know nothing beyond that. Without them there is no thought, no consciousness, no illusions of heaven. You die. Your existence ends.
It is the fear of this finality that drives many to religion. But what is there truly to fear? We all meet the same fate. And having had a NDE (near death experience) I know that the final moments are relatively peaceful. Your body shuts down, you do your little St. Vitus dance and void yourself. Thankfully I never got to the dancing or voiding part. The doctor (not God) beat the h-ll out of my chest and got my ticker going again. I don't consider it any sort of miracle rather a chance to look over the edge. -

"Why would this nut add fuel to the fire for those that hate his religion? Is he just a moron or what?"

A more interesting question is, just how far afield is this guy from his declared belief system? He's not God's servant, God is his hitman? What gospel does THAT show up in?

yeah, because incitement to assassinate the president is a perfectly fine thing to do. you do realize that the FBI investigates and interrogates people who even JOKE about killing the president, right? much less a preacher actively praying for obama to die.

So what did the preacher do. He said a prayer. In the the prayer he asked for death. Did he plan to kill someone? Anyone?
Reply
"incitement to assassinate" How did he do this? He prayed for death. Was he persuading, encouraging, instigating the death of anyone?
The FBI should investigate. But arrest? For words that he spoke? That's free speech. We use to be able to say what ever we wanted. Times they are a changin'.
Welcome to the Obamantion.-

So much for free speech................................. Sure, you can shout fire in a crowded theater aswell
Reply
So what did the preacher do................. Do you for a fact know that he didn't plan to kill someone. Do you know for a fact that in saying these words publicly, he wasn't hoping to push some unstable individual over the edge, and incite him to do "Gods" work. Does that just maybe qualify as planing.......
Incitement................see above. Does not strike you as somewhat unchristian for a priest to be prying to God to have someone killed. Isn't that against every moral doctrine of our society, relgious and societal?
Free speech.............Be real. Depending to whom and under what circumstances you address, there are a variety of situations that very likely will have before a judge. Free speech is wonderfull when exercised in a moral and responsible way. This is/was neighter moral nor responsible. As far as I'm concerned, this priest should be excomunicaded from his church, but I'm sure that won't happen. Most churches today are more interested in their self serving, than to do and say moral things to their flock. Many of them, and their priest's consider themselfes the guiding light on how politics should be conducted. No wonder they are loosing an ever larger part of their once formidable flock! -

Technically, praying for his death is an attempt to incite GOD to commit the killing. Isn't it?
Reply
He's asking GOD to kill the president.
Now if GOD is real, then he has asked someone real to kill the president. If he just thinks that GOD is real, then he has still attempted to ask someone real to kill the president. The only way this wouldn't be incitement is if he doesn't believe in GOD and GOD isn't real. Which would make him quite the hypocritical, opportunistic, money-worshipping sycophant, wouldn't it? -

Well since he so supposedly fervently believes in the power of his God ,yes, this should be considered a threat. What if he thought was given direction to do this himself? He is afterall talking to thin air. He could hear whatever response he desires. Forget prison he belongs in a rubber room.

You can ask God for many things through prayer..death of a president isn't on the list to my knowledge.
The way i was taught to deal with people i didn't like through prayer was very simple.
Ask God to give the person(s) that i didn't like what he thought they deserved..not what i thought..If that is good,so be it.If it isn't oh well. -

Actually, I have to admit that there have been times when I felt that we would be better off if Bush was no longer with us. Then I realize that it wouldn't be good for the country or the world in general. Besides, he had the ultimate bullet proof vest, Dick Cheney. -

Clap him in leg-irons, put him in the stocks and stone him to death?
Reply
Or crucify him upside down and play "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" to him at maximum volume through headphones?
Nah.. I don't believe in doing these things but I sure enjoy thinking about them.
Most probably this guy's biggest problem is just having too big a mouth.
Unfortunately, by the law of averages, at least a few members of his flock will indeed take him literally and though they might not be idiotic enough to take action the "buzz" is now out there and can reach into the remains of a brain of some totally pathological nutcase.
Whoever would have imagined the assassinations of the previous Presidents/Candidates/prominent beings..-

The reverend must be an Old Testament preacher. Fire and brimstone and the pits of Hell awaits all sinners but say the magical words, "I believe in Jesus", and you get a fast track to heaven.

If you believe in Jesus, you wouldn't be praying for Obama's death but Jesus' hands guiding him in doing God's work. -

I believe Jesus would allow the pregnancy to terminate naturally, allowing God to choose who he will bring up with him, or who will remain on earth to fulfill his prophecy.

As for contraception, consider the following passage;
"It is also to be feared that the man, growing used to the employment of anti-conceptive practices, may finally lose respect for the woman and, no longer caring for her physical and psychological equilibrium, may come to the point of considering her as a mere instrument of selfish enjoyment, and no longer as his respected and beloved companion"
Indeed, no one can doubt the fulfillment of these prophetic words. They have all been more than fulfilled in this country as a result of the widespread availability of contraceptives, the "free love" movement that started in the 1960s, and the loose sexual morality that it spawned and that continues to pervade Western culture.-

Pope Paul VI obviously had a pretty low opinion of people to suggest that anything other than lovemaking for the sole purpose of making a child would inherently cause a loss of respect.
Reply
Yes, there are 'players' out there, both male and female, who view their sexual partners as objects rather than people. I would argue that such people are sociopathic to begin with and are among the minority. There was a lot of overt irresponsible behavior in the 60s, but to say it all started then is naive. Further, to state that human sexuality in all its many forms is inherently 'bad' is overly simplistic. The sexual revolution of the 60s was important for women as it attempted to place them on equal footing with men. Yet we still have the double standard that a man who has had multiple sex partners is 'seasoned', while a woman who has had multiple sex partners is a 's l u t'.
I see no causative factor in the mere availability of contraceptives. Look to the socio-political environment. Look to the influence of the media and advertisement. -

Remember Pat Robertson saying something about a South American President? Why do these people of the cloth think that they can condemn individuals to death? I thought the purpose of religion is the pursuit of life. I find this quite contradictory.

How about this. I pray for an end to all religions. They all should be banned. The human race has nothing positive to gain from religion. It does nothing but enslave minds and create immoral, bigoted, racist, unthinking sheeple.-

Also, I don't recall any "liberal" of any particular influence wishing anything like death on our former vp. Many wished for him to not have been in the position he had, but actively and publicly wishing for his death I don't recall.
It seems that normally it is, to use your own words, conservative "douchebags" that wish publicly for various forms of demise for people they disagree with, while demanding complete loyalty for their own leaders from everyone else.
It sure is very "Christian" of you, to think in the terms you do.......................not!

"is he any different than all you liberal douche bags who wish Cheney had been the one to get shot, or died from his heart issues."
Reply
Yes.
Some liberals may have "wished" for Cheney to die, but didn't have the sheer gall and shamelessness to announce it in on a public radio program. Chances are also good that the -vast- majority of those wishing harm on Cheney were not leaders of a religion that preaches tolerance, compassion, love, and forgiveness.
If you can't see the difference, you are being obtuse. 8)
