There will be no Islamic Republic of Lebanon. Nor will there be a pro-Western Lebanese republic. There will, after yesterday's vote – for the Hizbollah-Christian coalition and for the secular Sunni-Christian alliance – be a government of "national salvation" in Beirut, run by an ex-army general-president with ever-increasing powers.

Washington would have preferred that Saad Hariri, son of the assassinated ex-prime minister, came out with a clear win. But out of the shadows will come the same crippled, un-healable Lebanon; delightful, unworkable, poor old Lebanon, corrupt, beautiful, vanity-prone, intelligent, democratic – yes, definitely, democratic – and absolutely outside our powers to reform.

Do you honestly believe that Lebanon is a Democracy? What they call a democracy was an agreement between the Christians and Muslims whereby the president would be a Maronite Christian and the President a Shia Muslim. Lebanon's democracy was a peace treaty. There isn't a true democracy in the entire Muslim world. Even Iran, which claims to be a democracy is an Oligarchy with the Mullahs having the real power (none are elected). You may slam Israel's democracy, but it's supreme court has overturned government policy and procedure time and time again. Have you ever seen that happen in a Muslim country? Hezbollah bullied it's way into the position that it has now. Remember the infighting just two years ago? How about the Civil War for 20 years. Lebanon has a de facto democracy at best, depending which group has the strongest military power and religious power.
