From the Article: "Ordinary flu kills about 250,000 to 500,000 people each year."

And how many people have died from Swine flu so far? About a hundred? I just don't understand the fearmongering going on. It's one thing to be prepared, but every time I turn around it's "Somebody has a suspected case of swine flu, run for the hills!"

Apparently what you don't understand is that this flu can very easily mutate from the mild strain we now see to a raging killer in very short amount of time.
They are doing a very good job in following all new cases (something they need to do so they can see if it is mutating),and keeping people informed.
So what fear mongering are you talking about ? I don't see it..I think only those on the right that are trying to politicize this are really the only ones that do..
There is a huge difference in fear mongering and keeping people informed about what has the potential to kill you and your loved ones..I prefer they err on the keeping everyone informed side.

It's far too early to know how severe this will be - flu season has really only started in the southern hemisphere

Plus there is no guarantee that by the time our flu season begins again next winter the virus won't have undergone a significant mutation and be more virulent

We only had swine flu in this country in the 1970's and the outbreak was at Ft Dix in NJ
That means that many people in the US have NO acquired immunity since they have never been exposed to the virus

For those who keep insisting this is fear mongering, I'd have to ask why are YOU so afraid of becoming informed?
Being informed about a subject alleviates unfounded fear
Staying ignorant about the subject will cause a panic if a severe outbreak develops
