will an election really change things? i realize that there is a public movement for change, but the clergy still run the show and hold ultimate veto over the civil authorities in iran.

i look forward to seeing what will happen and i hope that change will come to iran, in a way that will support a badly needed peace in the region. -

I hope that if a reformer becomes president, the swell of public opinion will change things. It wouldn't happen overnight, but as life becomes more liberal, in time change would become inevitable,it's a question of how radical would this change be?.At the worst, things would be going in a positive direction. At best a genuine democracy could replace the theocracy, that pulls the strings today.

A new leader is not the answer. The people, especially the young must force the issue. The religious leader must be removed from government, only then can the light of liberty, and justice shine. So many smart people in our country believe that liberty is exclusively American, and other nation can't fathom the concept I disagree liberty is God's gift. Those who would take it away are ignoring the powers that be.

Mrs Mousavi said in an interview that she and her husband plan to start working on women's rights immediately. They want to give women the right to choose clothing, jobs, etc. I don't know if the majority of the religious segment is ready for this choice yet.

I talked with a Persian friend last night and he says Mousavi IS gaining in popularity but they just can't tell who will lead. Many have switched alliances from ahmadinejad to Mousavi. Reminds me of our own election last year - republicans becoming democrats at the election. The Persians have also adopted our 'yes we can' chant.
I have the highest of hopes for Iran. They want the same change we want. -

A possible new leader in Iran who seems to be more accepting of the West. A new leader in the White House who is less abrasive and confrontational and who is willing to listen to Muslim concerns.

What is this world coming to? Before you know it we'll have cultural exchanges, sports diplomats, trade agreements, diplomatic negotiations, and treaties.
Gosh. I don't know if my heart can take all this excitement! -

In order to have a better understanding of the nature of the change and election that has been talked about in Iran a good first place to start would be to ask why Mousavi’s supporters have chosen the color of Green to represent their campaign?
Reply
In Iran those whose ancestral roots reache all the way to the family of the prophet Muhammad PBUH are called Seyyed and if these people belong to Azeri ethnic group they usually add the name MIR in front of their first name. Mousavi and even Khamanei, the supreme leader (including me ? ) are Iranian Azeris and that is the reason why his name is Mir Hossein Mousavi and it is customary for Seyyeds or among Azeris for Mirs to wear something green. Green is the color of Seyyeds and this was the reason they chose this color for his campaign. I think the choice of Green color for Mousavi’s campaign gives a new insight to the nature of change that is expected to come.
Mousavi personally is a very honest man, never been a corrupt politician and at this stage will not be corrupted. He is smart and his wife is smarter :)

Mousavi is referred to as a Reformist, not so fast. He is a changed UBER conservative. Some of his views, decisions and governmental decrees and policies when he was the prime minister for 8 years during Iran-Iraq war would shell shock many of the young people who currently are his die hard supporters, and it would make Ahmadinejad look like a bleeding heart liberal. After the ending of Iran-Iraq war he went pretty much into seclusion and was doing painting, art exhibition and he was also doing some teaching in universities. My belief is that he decided to spend a long time to reflect on some of his past decisions , policies, views and political philosophy. He is not considered a REFORMIST nor is he considered a CONSERVATIVE and this gives him a leverage to have friends among both camps, and he has been in touch with both camps and he will link both camps. Not all his supporters are REFORMISTS, many who voted for conservatives in last election are also voting for him now including many among my family members and relatives.
In fact REFORMISTS don’t really consider him one of their own and were upset when he declared his candidacy , and nobody took his campaign serious including Ahmadinejad. In many original polls he was only pulling 10 %. But that is all history..
With all the enthusiasm among the people who are voting for him, polls show that majority are voting for him just to get rid of Ahmadinejad, My own feeling is that at least half of the people who are voting for him are really voting Ahmadinejad out rather than voting Mousavi in.( I saw a poll that put that figure at 70%) After all Mousavi has not yet outlined any plan as how he is going to do things, what is his economic plans, what is his plan for anything. He has been busy pounding Ahmadinejad’d government and his failures .

After 6 presidential debates on Iranian national TV, Mousavi has proven to be a skillful debater. In the debate with Ahmadinejad, Mousavi did not say ONE word about his plans, any plan, not even one word but he was the VICTOR of the debate mainly because Ahmadinejad acted as if he was there to establish himself as a SELFISH LITTLE PRICK and he did a damn good job at doing that. As they say, fools bring their own rope and Ahmadinejad hung himself in the first debate. Ahmadinejad was RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL, CHILDISH, ARROGANT, IGNORANT, LIAR AND LIAR AND LIAR, and showed absolute disregard for any civilized norms or behavior, Ahmadinejad showed no respect to Iranian culture and social etiquettes . Ahmadinejad named some big names as CORRUPT politicians and named their family members and told public that they have been getting rich off Iranians money ,among these were Rafsanjani and Nategh Noori without whose efforts and backdoor lobbying Ahmadinejad would not have been the mayor of Tehran before becoming president . He broke many laws by publicly accusing and slandering individuals who have never been charged for any crime or corruption let alone being convicted. He will be spending lot of time in court rooms in the future. Mousavi addressed these charges briefly and kept pounding. The ugliest moment of the debate was when Ahmadinejad took a page of document with the picture of Mousavi’s wife on it in his hand and with a smirk on his face showed it to Mousavi and in a very disrespectful manner asked him:” do you know this woman?” And he kept repeating that and asked Mousavi :”do you want me to tell you about her” as if she was a criminal . You simply DO NOT talk about a man’s wife like that ,especially in Iran and especially in front of 50 million viewers who want to decide if you are fit for another term of presidency. That debate turned lot of people off, even some among those who had voted for him the last time. Things got worse ever since. Ahmadinejad acted like those blackjack players who get into a losing session and instead of quitting the game and taking a break they just raise the size of their bet and chase their loss and lose more till they are done. Ahmadinejad’s next moves were all about “chase the loss” instead of damage control.

After that debate , Rafsanjani ,the head of Assembly of Experts whose task is to watch supreme leader and it elects and can impeach and unseat the supreme leader wrote a very rude open letter to Supreme leader. His letter had no usual greetings at the beginning or end and told him to step on Ahmadinejad and he also implicitly threatened the Supreme leader of street violence by his supporters if things don’t change.
So will Mousavi win? There is a very GOOD possibility.
If Mousavi wins what do we expect to change?
In nuclear issue:
-Iran will keep running its centrifuges but could and will agree to enrichment of Uranium in Iran under the umbrella of a consortium of countries such as Russia, some European and even US. This case has to be transferred from UN to its legal path IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) , sanctions has to be lifted, in how many steps , will be negotiable, Iran will increase the number of its centrifuges steadily under this agreement till it has 100,000. Currently it is operating 7,000 centrifuges.
-In Middle East peace process, Iran will stay away from holocaust issue but it will announce once more time what it always has said , it will accept two state solution or ANY solution that Palestinians accept and sign. Any deal that Syria signs with Israel will be implicitly or explicitly accepted by Iran( depending) and it won’t damage Iran-Syria alliance
-Iran will more likely step up its economic/financial engagement in Iraq
-Iran will more likely sit down with Uncle Sam for a cup of tea, for , say , some prime time discussions and politics, A range of ISSUES from small to big and bigger …
-In Afghanistan Iran will more likely ask for more and honest power sharing with its friends there , Northern Alliance and also Ismail Khan who was marginalized by Karzai,
And it might allow US or others to haul their logistics needed in Afghanistan on Iranian roads or airways
-it will cooperate and might even coordinate more in fighting drug cartels near its borders
Domestically it will go back to implementing the “20 year outlook” , a plan developed over many years for developing its economy which Ahmadinejad totally ignored it ,
And….
more implementation of constitutional articles , maybe some major changes in constitution, maybe even rolling back some of the changes made in constitution by the UBER conservatives after the death of Imam Khomeini.
and one more thing...
post election could turn ugly, already some people have died (three that I have heard of) ,
post election could be anything from a widespread civil unrest (the worst scenario) to a civilized conduct of ALL parties which has been the case in the Iranian elections of the past 30 years. In the past 30 years and many many elections, Iran has not seen any thing like this. -

Yet another ARAB ruling our beautiful country... the way to go!
Reply
Mr Musavi javing an ancestory of arabic origin is not exactly a plus point to gain him votes is it?
Mr musavi was the president at the early yrs of the revolution, he is no different than the rest of them.
In the current climate where we have NO ECONOMY!! (so bad we might as well deny it), majority of our people living in poverty, and corruptio in the highest government level we need a major change.
It is not an Ellection.... the real representatives of teh Iranian people are either in Jail... or killed! What the foreigners fail to understant is that, there is no real opposition in Iran top this government, as based on the laws of the land if you are against this government you are an infidle and they can torture and kill you!
Its only another game, theatrical act for these thieves to continue thier rein in Iran.
