What Can We Learn From 'Operation Wetback'? »
Posted By btatman22 5 months ago in Political NewsOperation Wetback was a very successful anti-immigration program instituted in 1950’s America. The initiative was begun in 1954 and its objective was to round up all Mexican illegal aliens and deport them back to Mexico, in an effort to provide more jobs for legal U.S. citizens who had returned from World War II and the Korean War.

I'm not sure illegals take jobs away from Americans but they do use and abuse our health care and education systems. We just can't afford to continue providing these things the costs are just too high. Some states, California for instance, are having problems just providing these things for it's citizens. Combine that with security problems and we are in deep dodo. Btw, there are lots of illegal aliens who aren't from Central and South America, too. They are coming from all over the world.

Why do you only highlight the negative. If, as you say, they don't take away jobs from Americans, as you kind of implying, does that mean that the jobs they do take, are such that we are unwilling to take. How about factoring in such things in your thinking. What value of their labour benefits the consumer in general? What about the taxes that they directly or indirectly pay, such as pay stub deductions. If that isn't taken out, then its on the back of the employer, and not the worker. If they are working, and contributing to the country, why can't they use assorted public services. I really don't believe a sic person normally will travel sometimes over a thousand miles, often by foot, to use our medical facilities. If we have a problem in border towns, then it needs to be taken care ofd locally.
The article states that employers draw these workers here. You want to solve the problem, without spending a lot of money? Start going after the employers for breaking the law. Dry up the labour market, and there no longer is incentive for illegals.
To bunch illegal workers with security problems, euphemisn for terrorsit's, its beyond ridiculous. Want to solve the problem? Allow our police force to do their job, without having to justify every single move in documented reports. Do you have any idea how much time is devoted to paper work?
Lastly, whether you agree or not, this country is richer and stronger in its foundation, beacuse of workers from ther nations, legal or not. Its part of the heritage of the nation.

Now more than ever, we need to secure our borders. The drug cartel violence is seeping into the US along our southern borders and it is wide open to terrorists who can slip through without detection.

I have no problem with anyone who wants to come to the US, assimilate, and follow our laws and contribute their fair share. I don't want anyone here who feels they can circumvent the law and take advantage of our generosity. -

'Wetback' is kinda more controversial now than the good
old 50s when you could do all kinds of fun stuff and only
get a ticket for damaging a park tree by hanging heavy stuff to it.
In fact, a lot of hispanic-americans would get kinda
angry that you use it at all.
I know; you are safe; you are just anonymous screen-names.
Pero oiga, mamarachas, la palabra 'mojado' no es exactamente
la manera simpatica para dar la bienvenida a los latinos
a la partida Republicana, entiendes?
No, I suppose you don't.
Which is, of course, just fine.-

I was a kid in the 50s and well remember this. On Saturday nights, when the citrus farmers would truck their laborers into town to do their shopping, the Border Patrolmen would walk up and down the main street, walk up to any Hispanic-looking person and ask "Tienes papeles?" Do you have your papers?
For the most part, the people being questioned were part of the Bracero program, people from Mexico legally brought in to help the farmers. But some of the people being questioned were U.S.-born citizens.
That was the problem. American citizens were insulted to have their citizenship questioned just because they were Hispanic. Many of their families had been here since way before the gringos came. Many of them were doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. and resented being taken for mojados. Talk about racial profiling.
Yeah, I know just how the Arab-Americans feel. Well, OK, it never happened to me because I was light-skinned and looked very much like any American kid. But, like Sotomayor, I have empathy and I could feel their humiliation.
If the Republicans want to introduce a bill to bring this back, they can really kiss their Hispanic members goodbye for good. Gone are the days when Hispanics shrank away from demanding their rights.
What if the illegals were coming in from the Scandinavian countries and the Border Patrol was questioning every blond(e), blue-eyed person right on the street? You'd love that, right? -

The border is an interesting place. After 9/11 they were being complete cheneys and confiscating half the pharmeceuticals I was bringing in? Because I had declared them and none of them were DEA scheduled but they didn't want to admit they were wrong so I could volunteerly surrender half or have all of them confiscated until I went through the system which would have taken more time and money even though I was in the right. The next time I went through I was obviously drunk around 9:00 at the Tiajuana border and they asked me what country I was from so I told them California so they waved me through. 10 feet later I turned around and said don't you need to see my ID? They said no. Its called "white privilage" and it is a real thing. How about the Asians. We have them sneaking into California. How about operation gook? Wont bother me a bit because I am a white male.
