  Putin made a veiled threat to expropriate the plant? That doesn't sound right. Wasn't it Putin who was warning US against socialism?

    I think what you are forgetting is that the plant was the property of Russia, and privatized under certain conditions. If you don't meet the conditions, you lose the property.
    
    Much like in the US, the government is the actual owner of everything. Ask GM.

      I know that the plant was built during Soviet era and that it belonged to the government. I am on the other hand unaware of the conditions in privatization agreement or contract you are referencing. So can you tell me where your information about the "privatization conditions" is coming from? I can read Russian so a link would be helpful.
      
      As far as I know the factories in Pikalyovo were privatized 16 years ago under the same garage sale "everything must go" mantra as other enterprises. There have been a number of plant closures in Russia since the Yeltsin years, none of them facing a threat of nationalization, at least to best of my knowledge.

    as for putin, i've expressed no opinion either way. i know the russians (the ones that matter most here) mostly hold him in high regard because he is, generally, keeping a fragile country together. what he's done here is only a far more melodramatic, theatrical one-on-one version of what obama and congress are doing today.
    
    russia has taken a few hard knocks these past 20 years, including our broken promises, betrayals and lack of assistance, starting with gorbachev. we've given putin and russia no reason to ever trust anything we say or do. if anything, russia is in a better position for the future then we are. and as for its leadership under putin, it has shown more resilience and vision than anything bush did or has left on the table, to use his hackneyed metaphor. stick that in your arrogant ayn rand pipe and smoke it, fool.
