Is there an analogy with the rich folks that live quite well for many generations by only managing money?

Very few rich people actually produce anything.

      We could start with shutting down the steel mills, the saw mills, the very things that made us a super power. They pollute so move them offshore where we can't see them.

        WRONG and WRONG
        
        The steel mills were shut down due to low labor costs in other countries.
        
        Saw mills are still going strong; the U.S. is a net exporter of lumber, although the amount exported is decreasing. According to the lumber industrey this decrease is a result of increased competition from other countries (notably Russia)

        Actually we do have newer more efficient steel mills that don't pollute nearly as much. I'm sure that we could do better if China would stop subsidizing their steel industry as well as their other industries.

    The economically influential wealth has done a much better job of exporting U.S. industry by using low cost labor in other countries.
