    This wasn't uncommon during Roman times. They killed their enemies regularly as an example to those who would challenge their power. Romans killed Romans when an emperor would die. PBS Secrets of the Dead did a great show on this. It was another excavation of a Roman mass grave in the UK. The Romans didn't have the same beliefs we do today. Life was very cheap and it was common for them to kill everyone in a village or town. Violence, murder and death were all to common for that time in our history.
