Steve Buyer's (R-IN) comments during the tobacco reform debate on the House floor today. To recap, Buyer says it's not the tobacco that's killing you, it's the smoke. So smoke your lettuce...and suffer the consequences. Got it?

I was watching C-Span when Representative Buyer made these comments, and couldn’t believe it. Congressman Buyer didn’t cite any research that backed up his claim that smoking lettuce causes lung cancer.

Smoking lettuce may very well cause lung cancer, but the one thing that is missing from lettuce is the nicotine which is highly addictive and is what keeps tobacco smokers from quitting. So maybe if you smoke enough lettuce cigarettes you could very well contract lung cancer, but without the nicotine you wouldn’t be addicted as you are with tobacco. -

Isn't it about time that we put an end to government's acting "in loco parentis" (i.e., in place of one's parents)? Besides, even JESUS CHRIST said, "Call NO MAN on earth your father, for ye have but one Father, which art in heaven". In other words, look to God as your 'parentis'-- not your biological father, biological mother, OR GOVERNMENT!
