F ollowing the Republican Party of late
has been a movingly depressing experience, sort of like watching
Old Yeller die — if Old Yeller were a worm-infested feral
bitch who spent the past eight years biting children at bus stops
and ******** in neighborhood swimming pools. As a useful force in
American politics, the Republicans have been dead for a while now.
But in the seven months since Sarah Palin's nomination, they have
taken on an intriguing new role: providing much-needed comic relief
during dark times, serving as the unofficial rodeo clowns of the
Financial Crisis Era.

Change is not possible for these folks, they stick to their "southern strategy", fear mongering, class wars, and culture wars of the past. Driving backwards is seldom the best way forward even for those who focus on the rear view.

I hope the Republicans just keep it up. They are eating themselves alive from the inside out. All they have left are wrong headed right wing fanatics who don't have an original thought amongst them. They tell lies, use their normal fearmongering tactics, and allow total idiots like Cheney, Palin, and the talk show blowhards to speak for them.

No need to worry about their reemergence so long as they act like they do. It took 8 long years for the American people to finally figure out how they totally screwed up this country and we will not soon forget!

Who is this fat woman and why has she not sung?

Rassmussen has support for Dems and Republicans EVEN in a national survey just this past week. A remarkable turnaround in less than five months. Clearly, the "patient" is recovering
nicely and will soon walk away with it all.

Where? in South Carolina? 67%of Americans have an overall favorable opinion of the President .
No one likes congress...except for their own reps irregardless of party affiliation.
38% of Republicans have an unfavorable view of Republicans. (And bless them for being honest! - there is little to like about the record and absolutely no vision for the future.)
As to who is the leader of the GOP, whose flatulence is passing for policy...

For me, both parties are equally destructive...each in their own narrow-mionded ways.

We need to be rid of them. I think everyone knows that intuitively......but we're stuck with them because they control the apparatus and therefore, set the (election) rules.
What a sad affair for America.

I'm not sure I agree with you.

The Republican Party was once quite a source of reason and rectitude.

But the MODERN Republican Party has been infused with Extreme Ideologues - who sacrifice the best interests of our nation - and Her people - just to promote that Ideology.

And that Ideology is a hare-brained outward looking Ideology that clamors for Aggressive Control of the Levers of Power in the World.

The result is a breakdown of international standing abroad - and a limiting of options at home.

Democrats - once the party of hopelessly Optimistic Idealists - have become, in our generation ... the party of effective Government Management - who simply want Government to work FOR Americans ... .
              .

Well said Goppy. I agree with merlin that plurality would benefit American politics, but so far most of the viable 3rd parties have been single issue affairs, not broad enough to matter. What WOULD drastically improve government is the removal of all lobbies and the paving of K street into a parking lot. Until money can't buy influence there will be bad government.
No one should have more access to government than anyone else. That is the real problem.

"The Republican Party was once quite a source of reason and rectitude."

A truer statement has never been made.

I admired and still admire politicians like Dwight Eisenhower, Mark Hatfield, Howard Baker, Olympia Snowe, John McCain (the original one), George Pataki, John Lindsay, etc., etc. Even Ronald Reagan could be included here for his personality and affability, if not for his policies.

Today's Republicans seem to go out of their way to be nasty, exclusive, obstructionist, needlessly antagonistic, and arrogant. They do not debate so much as demand. They do not discuss so much as make declarations.

There's gwhiddon at his/her finest .... waving the flag for his favorite corporate media conglomerate.

It's nice when people have such brand loyalty.

As one who has experience in the field of marketing ... we depend on the mindlessness of such people.

Just as the foreigner ... Rupert Murdoch ... relied on the mindlessness of certain Americans when he came to our country and invaded her with a divisive promotion campaign.

LOL ... gwhiddon ... has been swept off his/her feet by this foreigner's message ... and allowed this foreigner to take over the minds of millions of Americans.

And this message has been one of turning Americans against their own Government.

Which is odd for gwhiddon ... since he's depended upon Government for his very livelihood.

Of course, there's never a rational excuse for mindless hatred.

GW, Merlin-Those comments are in fact exactly the "useful" political discussion they are talking about in the article. I have to lol at the people that see this as right v left, republican party v democratic party, conservative v liberal. Blind allegiance to slogans and false ideology may be some comfort zone for some, most of us now see far beyond that. It's a question of keeping ignorant and greed driven imbeciles away from power. Where there is a power created, these types will be there to abuse it. I will say there are some who are neither dim witted, nor driven entirely by personal greed right now in the Democratic party, I can't think of a republican I would say that about. Certainly not any of the ones given national exposure at least. This will change, as inevitably the power is more in the hands of these Democrats, they will be the targets now. And outside of Obama and a few others, I don't see many who are capable of resisting the call of corruption. Republicans have stood for absolutely nothing that benefits the common man. Now they stand for absolutely nothing at all. You may have some warm fuzzy memory of it's long defunct slogans, but the actions have been observed and found wanting.

Freaking coward, how can you take money from the government your whole life, never work a day in the private sector, then swiftboat people that do make their own money? Then again, that's typical con rovian politics, full of lies and propaganda. Acuse and berate others for doing exactly what you are doing.

For the record, GW, if your referring to me, I own a couple small businesses that have done pretty well. I paid 40% of my income to taxes the last couple years (you have an idea about my personal income if you know the tax codes) and have never been on any government dole of any kind...that of course may change now thanks to your hero's policies. The GWB years steadily eroded my client base until now 4 out of every 5 clients have gone bankrupt closing their doors forever. I had to lay off my employees, now it's just me. And if any further closings occur there will be not enough income for me to continue either. (This was a successful educational services and consulting firm in business since 1992. Nothing but growth until 2003 then decline due to private schools enrollments dropping dramatically. Why? Because most people could no longer afford private schools. Republican policy has been a nightmare for most people economically, it may have been a "crash" for Wall St. last year, but it has been a steady decline on Main St. for the entire reign of idiocy during the Bush years. What people such as Henry Ford understood was that if you paid people enough to buy your products, then you sold more products. The economic success of this nation had far less to do with robber barons and bundling "instruments" into hot potatoes than simply employing the middle class and paying them a fair wage. Until that becomes the economic goal, there will be nothing but decline. (How many Chinese laborers making 30 dollars a week will be buying Henry Fords cars?) Republican economic policy benefits a few already obscenely wealthy, deteriorates conditions for the vast majority. Will Obama do better? It's an awful lot to ask, the damage is extensive. We shall see. It will be a long long time before any reasonable middle class voter trusts another republican. ( or any business owner who relies on clients that are in the middle class).
I'm sick to death of GOP rhetoric, slogans and BS. We watched and saw with our own eyes what they did to this country. It's a damned crime and no slogan or BS from a cheerleader like yourself changes what we all observed.
                      You should be ashamed.

Wrong there. I work for a small company of 15 people that has been struggling ever since Obama was inaugurated.

I can't support his ideas of taking more money from my "rich" boss and putting it into his entitlement programs.

I take care of my own medical bills, which aren't much since I ride 75 miles a week to work and back every day.

When you okaying Obama's ideas, you are being generous with MY money. You're awfully generous with other peoples money.

If you want to be generous, give away your money.

The only money I ever took from the government, was that Bush Stimulus check. And I would have sent it back to pay down the dept if I had not gotten hard up. (two kids in college and my wife had to stop working to care for her father).
Yeah I took it: and feel like heal.
My boss suggested go on unemployment....I refused. If I had taken it at the time, I would have received the maximum benefit. If I take it now I probably would not get enough to pay my mortgage (about $1G) and I only have two years left until the house is paid for.
It would have been paid off 6 years ago, but I got in trouble with the IRS and had to refinance in order to pay them off.
Most of the self-employed folks I know have a similar, if not worse story to tell.
I resent becoming an employee for a commercial construction company. I hate having to **** in a cup to prove I do not smoke pot.
And now that I am down from 58 hours a week to 22 and the bottom falls out. If the test f*cks up I will lose any chance of getting what is left of unemployment benefits. And If I got them after paying into the trust fund for the last 10 years, I would have to pay full taxes on them.
There is a huge number of folks that show no adjusted gross income and get a $3000 check from the government in spite of writing off their income as a short-term capitol gains loss, and socking the maximum amount into their IRA.
With respect: I do not think you really understand why I think the way I do.
I do not want any of the fancy stuff for myself, I would just as soon earn it .
I just feel safer not living among desperate people.

Oh yes, nothing to be ashamed of from my home.

I've worked for 40 years now, did my time in the Navy, worked in the space program, didn't like it much as it was a union job. The work was fantastic, but the unions ruined all intitiative.

Father retired after 20 years in the Air Force as a Major in Air Force intelligence. He taught me to be independent, and not trust what ANYBODY says, government included.

And I don't trust you. You are too bigoted.

No creationist here - I work in a technical field, and was brought up studying physics and astronomy. You are showing your bigotry by assuming that anyone who disagrees with big government is ignorant of scientific principles. Be careful who you attack as ignorant. Like I said above, you have no idea who I am or what I believe in.

No evangelical here either, I just believe in independence, with as little government as possible.

                                Well gwhiddon:
I can honestly say that (having paid attention) I consider your outlook idealistically pure. And even rational.
For the sake of explaining my personal viewpoint.....I do not trust government.. But I trust corporate interests less.
The World Bank say's we are #1 in terms of the easiest for business to employ a workforce.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis says that 85% of corporate profits are generated in the US.
Any financial page will show that major publicity traded companies are owned by less 1% insiders. There is a pattern of ownership and it is the same holding companies, which own each other. And for the most part are not US holding companies. They own the companies that compete against each other.
More than 1/2 of the mining and petroleum interests for this country are held by foreigners.
When the dust settles we will work for less. Salaries and wages represent less than 9% of corporate receipts. (I have studied IRS data)
Corporate receipts are somewhere around $28 trillion and income from wages is something like $6 trillion.
Revenue from corporate taxes for May was $-1.4 billion
From personal income tax so far this year : $592 Billion
From Social security payments: $577 Billion
I am not making this up.

Now see ... this is clear evidence to me of your psychotic mindset, gwhiddon.

I have never known RFE to mention working for government ... or collecting money from government.

YOU, on the other hand, have spent a LIFETIME on the receiving end of taxpayer money.

                            AS WAS YOUR FATHER!

Your own bio clearly states that your father was an Air Force officer for 20 years.

While it's true that I respect your father's service to our nation ... you are IGNORING the FACT that this is being on the Government DOLE ... i.e. being the recipient of Government Largesse.

                            Get it?

In addition, your bio goes on to state that YOU YOURSELF have been the recipient of Government Money.

In fact, you owe your very career to the Government. As you state:
" ... 4 years as a Radioman in the Navy from 1966-1970, 5 years working for NASA tracking stations, 4 of it in Fairbanks, Alaska ..."

That's great that you also served your country ... but do you appreciate the fact that RFE's and my tax dollars ... not to mention the GOVERNMENT ... funded your entire LIFE?

                            You should show more appreciation.

                            OR ....

Maybe that's why you are so bitter towards Government .... you feel as though you couldn't have made a life for yourself were it not for Government ...

I understand that ... it's a common malady among embittered people.

Hopefully, you will grow some gonads - and take responsibility for your OWN life choices ... don't you think it's about time?

you seriously did not just make a stab at a person in the military surely you didn't. Without the military you would not be free to say what you want to say. The military is the only actual legitimate purpose of the federal government. The governments entire job is to protect this country and in doing so create an infustructure ie roads which are actually only part of the government for transportation of troups for military protection of this countrys boarders, it definately is not to provide healthcare, retirement or a bunch of pork barrel projects. When did people stop being responsible for themselves?

WOW ... so I'm not allowed to identify military service without you ASSUMING that I'm stabbing the person?

What kind of freak are you?

Didn't you read the part where I said I respected their service to our country?

The point of my comment was that ... while this person complains about getting money from the Government ... HE was getting money from the Government ... as well as ... his DAD.

                                Do you deny that?

Do you deny that when you are in the military ... you are working for the GOVERNMENT?

What kind of a dolt are you?

And if you think that the military is the ONLY purpose of Government ... you must be living in a foreign country.

Or else ... I'm talking to Terry Nichols.

You America haters really make me sick.

                                Such whiners.

                                Such pathetic, cowardly, little whiners.

Goppy , your a pathetic excuse for an American. Of course the military gets paid by the government, they are the only ones actually doing the job that the government was designed for. The government is suppose to uphold the constitution, NO place in the constitution does it say its suppose to plan your retirement, feed you and your family, take care of you when your sick, supply you with a job or save a poorly managed company from going under in order to save your job. Its not suppose to be spending tax money on pork barrel projects like sculptures of thought bubbles or rat habitats in california. If californians want to save some rat let them build it a habitat and if the people of some state want a sculpture let them pay for it.
Your retirement , your health and your familys health , your food and roof is your responsiblity. Its individuals responsiblity to take care of themselves, not the government. There are plenty of churchs and charities to take care of those who can not take care of themselves in this country plus there is the family responsibility to take care of each other. Its not in the constitution that the government is suppose to feed , clothe and keep a roof over your head or anyone elses.
Everytime people look to government to solve a problem in their lives they are giving up freedom. America is not great because of government, it is great because of individuals who have worked hard to make this country great.
Oh and one last thing, this country is not a democracy, it is a Republic.

All military service personnel do an honorable service to our country and deserve our praise and gratitude. We do not begrudge them their just pay (which I feel is too low). I even do not begrudge them their retirement pay after 20 years of service.

However, all military retirement pay and those of all politicians are unfunded retirement benefits. This means all these moneys come out of the taxes we annually pay to the IRS.

Although I do not begrudge them their retirement pay, they in turn must also be appreciative of the continuing financial support they receive from public largesse. It is a continuing benefit (well deserved) that we grant to them. Continuing retirement fund for politicians is a different story and I will not discuss that here.

By the same token we can not begrudge the granting of certain welfare support to those truly needing public help. This is especially true in the face of problems such as
                                      - tax breaks for the rich (estate taxes, capital gains) that the Republicans are enamored of
                                      - govt subsidies for meat, dairy, tobacco industries
                                      - foreign tax credits, depreciation allowances, investment credits for large corporations such as oil companies
                                      - no bid contracts, gigantic cost overruns, and inflated charges that our government pays to companies

To me, these are all forms of welfare for the rich and the multibillion dollar corporations.

Those that deserve public financial support I mentioned above - no problem

Those that do NOT deserve public financial support - big problem

You must be fed up with yourself ... because you are clearly an idiot of the first order.

You despicable little ... anti-American worm.

You are such a coward the way you mis-represent my words ... and manipulate what service to our nation represents.

How dare you re-define words to suit your Government Hating Ideology.

Being in the Military IS being an employee of Government ... you idiot ... that's why Barack Obama is called COMMANDER IN CHIEF.

                                        How stupid can stupid be?

The answer can be found in 'fedupwithideiots'.

In a way it's sad. These people have some set of images of what these parties stand for that was probably learned from their parents as a child and have not observed anything politically since. Denial is not a river.

fedupwithidiots - I wonder why people like you (including luvmylibs and libsrfunny) come up with internet monikers like yours. You guys seem to go out of your way to insult liberals just with your names.

When your posts start out from the top with an insult to the opposition, it almost precludes the possibility of intelligent discourse and debate. It shows immediately that your minds are already in a contrarian mode and that is how you identify yourself.

It is just like an Iranian demonstration that shouts "Death to the Great Satan." You know you are not going to get much attention to the opposite point of view.

Just curious why you guys like to identify yourselves with a negative. You then are perceived simply as a negative person.

I like to think of myself as a positive person.

I have found that many, many, many people are typically uninformed, yet they tend to spew their opinions on specific issues regardless? If one would simply do some legitimate research, one would then find that during the 08" election, Northern states had far more racially-motivated incidents than those in Southern states. I would also simply and truly say that there are racist and bigoted people in every demographic, in every city and county in the U.S. as well in Europe and elsewhere abroad. There are also certainly Republicans and Democrats spread around in these same areas almost equally....I mean the person who wrote the above artical is an obviously biased person based on her statements concerning the Republican Party although Republicans will differ in opinion just any individual would? Listen lady, a little piece of advise for you....have another twinkie and start doing some research before you have another brain-fart like the one you had above, um-K?

                                              Clinton's record -
                                              - average economic growth of 4% for 10 sequential years (the longest sustained growth in the history of the USA)
                                              - created 22.5 million NEW jobs
                                              - median family income rose from $42612 in 1993 to $48950 in 1999.
                                              - overall unemployment rate dropped to 4.0% when he left office.
                                              - average yearly inflation rate of 2.5%
                                              - poverty rate declined from 15.1% to 11.8%
                                              - welfare recipients dropped from 7.5 million to 6.6 million
                                              - created budget surpluses from 1997 to 2001. The 2001 budget was passed in 2000 by Clinton.
                                              - Omnibus Tax Reconciliation Act of 1993 which raised taxes on the top 1.2% of taxpayers and decreased taxes on 15 million low income families and 90% of small businesses, and mandated balanced budgets.
                                              - created the Roth IRA
                                              - increased the child tax credit
                                              - created NAFTA and about 300 other trade agreements with nations around the world. These resulted in cuts in import taxes on foreign goods imported here and import taxes in countries that imported US goods there. This has been called the largest international tax cut in the history of the world. It kept consumer prices and inflation down here in the USA and internationally.

I wonder if you did ANY research before making a stupid, sweeping statement like "Clinton made a mess."?

You can thank Newt Gingrich for all those positive things listed. Clinton had to be dragged kicking and screaming to sign all the bills and budgets offered by Republicans, even though they didn't go far enough.

Is that a 'formal' plea of insanity?

You dont really think the dems are going to say they did anything wrong do you? These 2 parties and there blind followers hate one thing in common. THE TRUTH. The truth that they are both responsible for how things are.

Sad but true. The Republicans have allowed themselves to drift away from the conservative idealism of Ronald Reagan only to embrace the hatemongering of the Extreme Right not just from the hardline Christian Phalangists who condemn abortion & same-sex marriage, but from Right-wing dispensers of virulent, vitriolic hate such as Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Charles Krauthammer. Ann Coulter, etc..

If the GOP is serious in gaining back its lost support base with the American people, they should strive to disassociate themselves from Right-wing Christian groups & embrace the ideals of Ronald Reagan & other such conservative pragmatists.

Just for the record, i happen to be a dyed-in-the-wool LIBERAL!

Too late, lloydm65 ... you already HAVE given up Jesus for a little power ... a little POLITICAL power ... courtesy of Jerry Falwell.

                                                        .

Congratulations on your birthday. That's most impressive. 75! Wow ... And it's interesting how you characterize it as a 'short' ride.

Although ... the years DO seem to be slipping by faster and faster.

                                                        Well done.

this coming from the party that gave us Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Blago, Bubba, and so many more. Nice try but beware the movement to repeal the Obanus mess is growing and coming to a town near you.
