Is there a political pattern to the stimulus tour?
Since Congress passed President Barack Obama’s $787 billion economic stimulus bill in February, administration officials have traveled to at least 66 events across the country to tout the massive spending program or hand out stimulus cash to grateful local officials.
But a POLITICO examination of the travel reveals a distinctly political trend line: Top officials have hosted events predominantly in states that Obama won in 2008

"What’s more, the examination revealed that Obama officials all but avoided Southern states that Obama lost.
It is not unusual for a presidential administration to find ways to reward its supporters through federal largesse, particularly in this case, when the goal of the stimulus program is push money out the door to states and localities that can spend it quickly to jump-start the economy. The Bush administration was criticized in 2004 for sending Cabinet officials on trips that critics said doubled as campaigning for the president’s reelection bid.
But the numbers tell the tale: 52 of the 66 events were in states that backed Obama. And taken together, the itineraries amount to a veritable map of Obama’s election-night victories — big-money states like California and New York, swing states like Ohio and Colorado that Obama turned blue and other solidly Democratic states Obama kept in his column."
The events were weighted to big cities that provided Obama some of his biggest election-night margins: Cleveland, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia.
Of the other 14 events, Vice President Joe Biden and Cabinet officials often touched down in places where Obama lost narrowly and that Democrats hope to pull into their column by 2012, such as Missouri, Arizona, Montana and North Dakota.
Only two Southern states were visited by Cabinet officials for stimulus-related trips: Georgia and Kentucky, according to information provided by the White House and an examination of news releases from all 21 Cabinet-level agencies.-

Schlafly Perpetuates Republican Car Dealership Closing Myth
Reply
In a June 2, 2009 Townhall blogpost, Phyllis Schlafly perpetuated a myth that is gaining traction in the conservative noise machine: that the Obama administration took a direct hand in GM and Chrysler car dealership closings and deliberately targeted dealerships that contributed to Republican candidates. This accusation is baseless. The Obama administration had no hand in deciding what dealerships would close, as GM and Chrysler CEOs have made clear. In addition, statistical analysis shows that car dealerships are overwhelmingly owned by Republicans, and more car dealerships that remained open are owned by Republicans than Democrats.
GM And Chrysler CEOs Confirmed The Obama Administration Played "No Role In Picking The Auto Dealerships That Are Being Closed." According to The Detroit News: "Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Thursday the Obama administration had no role in picking the auto dealerships that are being closed by General Motors Corp. or Chrysler LLC. During a 40-minute meeting Tuesday at the White House with the CEOs of major automakers, LaHood said he asked the top executives at GM and Chrysler if they were forced to close dealerships. Chrysler wants to close 789 of its nearly 3,200 dealers by June 9, while GM has sent termination notices to 1,100 of its 6,200 dealerships in an effort to close them by October 2010. 'I asked (GM CEO Fritz Henderson) and (Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli) if any of these folks were pressured to close X number of dealerships or do it at a certain time,' LaHood said during an appearance at the National Press Club. Both CEOs said no pressure was put on them, LaHood said." [The Detroit News, 5/21/09; emphasis added]

Fox Nation headline claims "Stimulus Not Working," but link says "funds are not enough"
Reply
May 12, 2009
On May 12, FoxNation.com featured the headline "States Say Stimulus Not Working." But contrary to the headline's suggestion that states are claiming that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is not providing effective economic stimulus, the May 12 Washington Post article to which the headline linked reported: "Eleven weeks after Congress settled on a stimulus package that provided $135 billion to limit layoffs in state governments, many states are finding that the funds are not enough and are moving to lay off thousands of public employees" [emphasis added].
The Post further reported that "[a]s the stimulus plan was being drawn up, there was agreement among the White House, congressional Democrats and many economists that a key goal was to keep states from making big layoffs at a time when 700,000 Americans were losing their jobs every month," and that the House-passed version of the bill included "$79 billion in 'stabilization' money to plug gaps in states' budgets," while "in the Senate, the stabilization funding was cut by $40 billion to secure the support of the three Republicans who were needed for a filibuster-proof 60 votes."

"And the White House sharply denied that there was any political motivation to the travel. “Politics plays no role in implementation of the Recovery Act or highlighting its successes. Period,” said Liz Oxhorn, press secretary for the Recovery Act.

Still, the stimulus bill has the potential to be a publicity bonanza for the Obama administration for years to come — through the 2010 midterm elections and beyond.
As of mid-May, the administration had spent only 6 percent of the money Congress allotted for the program, and the White House says officials will continue to travel the country until all of the money is spent.
The events generally come in the form of roundtable discussions, upbeat speeches and sweeping announcements of billions of dollars for local communities.
Some have all the hallmarks of campaign events, featuring banks of television cameras, flag-bedecked stages and local politicians working the crowds.
Many generate the kind of admiring local media coverage that politicians crave — and largely escape the attention of national outlets."

The GOP's Misguided Attacks On The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act
Reply
AP: "At The White House, Where Saving Jobs Always Was As Much A Priority As Creating Jobs, The Bus Industry Is A Success Story." As reported in the Associated Press, "At the White House, where saving jobs always was as much a priority as creating jobs, the bus industry is a success story. But it also shows how hard it is to account for that success, especially in an industry that keeps shedding jobs despite the stimulus." [Associated Press, 6/7/09]
Business managers can vouch for the success of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:
Patrick Scully, chief commercial officer at Daimler Buses North America Inc.: "The stimulus has been a plus, but it's just, how do you do the math... You could say, without it things would be worse... I would guarantee you, without this stimulus bill, we would have to curtail our operation." [Associated Press, 6/7/09]
Joseph Gibson, senior vice president for sales at North American Bus Industries: "It helps preserve the jobs that we have... We don't have plans for any massive hiring. Right now we're just trying to maintain stability." [Associated Press, 6/7/09]
Mark Land, spokesman for Cummins Inc.: "It will certainly help... To the extent the stimulus is successful helping get the economy in the right direction, to the extent it helps the economy, helps our market, that's where we're going to benefit... If that allows us to bring a few people back, then it will be fair to say then the stimulus was part of the solution." [Associated Press, 6/7/09]
May Saw 175,000 Fewer Jobs Lost Than Expected, The Lowest Job Loss Numbers Since September 2008. The Washington Post reported: "With companies in no mood to hire, the unemployment rate jumped to 9.4 percent in May, the highest in more than 25 years. But the pace of layoffs eased, with employers cutting 345,000 jobs, the fewest since September." [Washington Post, 6/5/09; emphasis added]

“It’s always great to play Santa Claus when the sack is bottomless,” said Jack Pitney, a professor of politics at Claremont McKenna College in California. Pitney says there’s a clear political rationale behind the travel pattern: “It’s better to shore up your base and spend time in swing states than it is to spend time in states that will probably go against you anyway.”
Still, the White House says its stimulus events are not political rallies. Instead, they are intended to let Obama administration officials meet and gather ideas from the local officials and business leaders who are most affected by the stimulus spending. And the White House says the trips also help alert Americans to stimulus money they might not have known was available to them.
But not everyone agrees that the great stimulus road trip is free of political considerations.

Obama's Spending Plans May Pose Political Risks
Concern Mounts in White House as 2010 Elections Loom
After enjoying months of towering poll numbers, legislative victories and well-received foreign policy initiatives, the White House has become increasingly concerned that President Obama's spending plans, which would require $9 trillion in government borrowing over the next decade, could become a political liability that defines the 2010 midterm elections.
The concern was reflected in the aggressive response from administration officials to criticism that money from Obama's stimulus plan is arriving too slowly to help the languishing economy, as well as in the president's public endorsement of "pay as you go" legislation, which would require Congress to make room for new non-discretionary spending with equivalent cuts to other parts of the budget. Yesterday, Obama also outlined billions of dollars in savings that would be used to pay for his health-care reform proposal.
But there is evidence of growing public concern over his fiscal policies. As he traveled Thursday in Green Bay, Wis., Obama was greeted by demonstrators holding signs that said, "No socialism" and "Taxed Enough Yet?"

Republicans Are Laying The Groundwork For Their Post-Recovery Talking Points
Reply
June 08, 2009 3:10 pm ET by Chris Harris
In the coming months, as the economy (hopefully) begins to show signs of improvement, be on the lookout for a new talking point in which Republicans will claim economic recovery was inevitable and was NOT a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"The Party Of No" Put All Their Eggs In The "Economic Failure" Basket
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act received ZERO Republican votes in the House and merely three in the Senate (down to two after Sen. Arlen Specter switched parties).
In the short term, this exercise in party discipline gave the GOP the ability to unanimously criticize Democrats as the economy remains sour before the stimulus money has a chance to make a significant difference.
But by unanimously opposing President Obama's efforts to revive the struggling economy, Republicans have made it impossible for their party to take any credit for the economy's eventual recovery.
By continually criticizing the stimulus package, the GOP has killed two of their own birds with one stone. First, they have made it impossible for any Republican to take credit for helping the economy recover. Second, by lowering the public's expectations of the stimulus bill's effectiveness, Democrats in Washington look even more heroic than they otherwise would have.
After it became known that the number of jobs lost in May was significantly less than expected, Republicans began to ask themselves: What do we do if the stimulus is working?
The GOP's Attempt To Redefine History
The Republican Party's only option will be to redefine history by asserting the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act played no part in boosting our economy.

I think they need to visit Michigan as I understand they are now using gravel on their roads instead of asphalt because they don't have the money for asphalt. In Flint, Michigan they are saying that abandoned real property in the city is as high as s40% and city leaders are talking about bulldozing this abandoned property. Can you imagine 40% of an American city being bulldozed?

Don't look now Wolfie but bulldozing declining cities across the US may become policy under this administration
Reply
US cities may have to be bulldozed in order to survive
Dozens of US cities may have entire neighbourhoods bulldozed as part of drastic "shrink to survive" proposals being considered by the Obama administration to tackle economic decline.
The government looking at expanding a pioneering scheme in Flint, one of the poorest US cities, which involves razing entire districts and returning the land to nature.
Local politicians believe the city must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.
The radical experiment is the brainchild of Dan Kildee, treasurer of Genesee County, which includes Flint.
Having outlined his strategy to Barack Obama during the election campaign, Mr Kildee has now been approached by the US government and a group of charities who want him to apply what he has learnt to the rest of the country.
Mr Kildee said he will concentrate on 50 cities, identified in a recent study by the Brookings Institution, an influential Washington think-tank, as potentially needing to shrink substantially to cope with their declining fortunes.

I think even some of the MSM are beginning to squirm a little bit over their unconditional support of this administration. There was actually a piece on MSNBC a couple of days ago that was not complimentary of Obama's selection of ambassadorships based on payback rather than qualifications and of Gibbs smart-ass response to a reporters questions about it.-

This is a pretty simple data point but conservative blogs have yet again weaved that fact into a vast and wide conspiracy theory and then feign outrage when people laugh at them.
UPCOMING CONSPIRACY THEORY: Juge Sotomayor is an enemy agent of Mexico! Many of you might remember that they accused current L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of the same thing. Its like the right has something against hispanics or something.

...And Statistical Analysis That Shows The Argument [that the closing of car dealerships has been partisan] Is Fundamentally Flawed
Reply
Car Dealers Contributed Overwhelmingly To Republican Candidates - Among The Dealerships That Chrysler And GM Closed, AND Among The Dealerships That Remained Open. According to statistician Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight.com: "Overall, 88 percent of the contributions from car dealers went to Republican candidates and just 12 percent to Democratic candidates. By comparison, the list of dealers on Doug Ross's list (which I haven't vetted, but I assume is fine) gave 92 percent of their money to Republicans -- not really a significant difference. There's no conspiracy here, folks -- just some bad math. It shouldn't be any surprise, by the way, that car dealers tend to vote -- and donate -- Republican. They are usually male, they are usually older (you don't own an auto dealership in your 20s), and they have obvious reasons to be pro-business, pro-tax cut, anti-green energy and anti-labor. Car dealerships need quite a bit of space and will tend to be located in suburban or rural areas. I can't think of too many other occupations that are more natural fits for the Republican Party. Unfortunately, while we are still a nation of drivers, we are not a nation of dealers." [FiveThirtyEight.com, 5/27/09, emphasis added]

Lynn Sweet, the author of the article, and the poster and any number of the commenters are, as usual, the kind of nitwit internet journalists that shouldn't be writing anything that qualifies as news until after they've taken even the most basic of journalism classes. Do your research people and present the facts of your case, if they exist, objectively. News, as opposed to editorial opinion, is "supposed" to be objectively presented information from which readers are able to draw their own conclusions and make educated decisions. It is NOT supposed to be hateful propaganda. If that is what you want to write, then move to Iran or somewhere where facism is the order of the day. The only state, per se, that President Obama won, as these articles and comments continually speak about, was Connecticut. This election was a historic divide in the country's voting pattern in a way that no one, that I have heard, is talking about. If you look at the election results by state, yes, of course, you will see that it appears President Obama won a great many "states". However, if you click the tab that shows "Election Results by County, or by District" a VERY different looking map appears. President obama won almost all of the nations cities. Even small to medium sized cities in states where he ultimately "lost". Even in traditionally democratic states like New York or NJ, he lost huge swaths of suburban and rural counties, but won New York City, Newark, Trenton, etc., where most of the people live. And as for those Southern states that you say he lost; he mostly won their biggest cities as well, just not by enough of a margin to carry the entire state and overcome the rural votes. This wasn't an election between white and black voters or an election between Dems and GOPers, or an election between the northern and southern states, it was an election between the city people and you dumb assed, trash talking, gun toting, country Neanderthals. Luckily we won. Maybe now we can begin to stop living like the Revolutionary War just ended or like the Civil War is still going on and move forward into a smarter future.
