i'm pretty much over the issue...it seems that with power, people react similarly.

i'd rather that our leader maintain some level of competence than be some moral ideal...except when they claim that status and sit in jusgement of others. -

Eleven years ago, Ensign voted to impeach President Bill Clinton on two counts related to the cover-up of his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Five years ago, Ensign took to the floor of the Senate and said this:
"Marriage recognizes the ideal of a father and mother living together to raise their children. Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation. Marriage, as a social institution, predates every other institution on which ordered society in America has relied." -

It just boils down to the fact that we're all human, we all make mistakes, and some of us actually make the effort to apologize for our mistakes.

His wife says they've patched things up, and they're a stronger couple for it.
More power to them, and other couples who can say the same thing.

I got this from the Huffington Post. Evidently Ensign has a lot of disdain for infidelity.

"During the height of the scandal surrounding Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, the Nevada Republican denounced the president's conduct as "an embarrassing moment for the country."
'I think we have to feel very sad for the American people and Hillary and Chelsea,' he said.
Weeks later, Ensign would call on Clinton to resign. "I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it's because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through," he was quoted saying at the time. "He has no credibility left," he added."-

I think that means he should follow the recommendations he has given out so freely to others who were caught with their pants down. Since his wife said she found out about it last year and that they had worked it out, did he think he was home free and didn't have to follow the rules he so willingly set for every one else!

I really don't care about politicians and their private lives, as long as they are effective administrators and legislators.
Reply
They should all learn to shut their mouths when in a position to judge others. That is not part of their job description and it unfailingly gets them into trouble.

This story has been around for quite some time ... what's new is that he's finally accepting accountability for his actions.
Reply
I, for one, find this commendable ... and somewhat surprising ... given that ... part of the Modern Republican Ideology is to never ..... NEVER ..... accept accountability for their actions.
.
In fact, their Moral Vacancy is such that ... their followers DEMAND that the REST of society give them all FREE PASSES for their every ethical lapse.

[In a speech "to defend the sanctity of marriage and urge passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment Act," on the Senate floor in 2004, Ensign said "marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded." ]

Yup, it's such a cornerstone that Ensign walked all over it. -

Mesodude, don't be asinine. In order for Ensign to run for any office he would have to switch parties, and drown his mistake. Will republican's ever learn.I personally believe that like chicken at one hundred, eighty degrees he's done. Now step out of line.I had just as well vote for a pervert,as an adult er.

I applaud CBS News and the Political Hotsheet for learning that reporting the party affiliation of politicians in their stories is really important and a journalistic necessity. They mention the words "Republican" or "conservative" at least 5 times in this story.
Reply
Contrast that with their story about John Edwards in March of 2009 where party affiliation is not mentioned even once.

Ensign was hardly a familiar politician. Now, many people know he screwed around on his wife, he's conservative and a Republican, and he's a hypocrite. Isn't notoriety wonderful? And if you didn't know who Edwards is with all the exposure he had during the democratic presidential campaigns of 2004 and 2008, then that says a lot about your awareness of politics.

Lots of politicians are sleazy, and we all have some skeletons in our closets. The problem is when politicians judge others for what they themselves do, IMO. I always thought the Clinton impeachment was a royal waste of taxpayer dollars and national psychic energy.

Time for all of the judgmental sleazebags to get off the moralizing high horse and do their jobs. -
