60 Percent of Eighth Graders Fail at Chicago Middle School »
Posted By btatman22 5 months, 1 week ago in Political News(Op-Ed) The fact that graduation rates are abysmal at inner-city schools is nothing new. One Chicago school in particular, Bradwell Elementary, did not graduate 44 of the 67 eight graders at the school. That equates to a 40% graduation rate among eight graders at the school. This is abysmal performance. Who’s to blame? In this instance is it the school’s fault?

Daniel, extending you all due respect for your question... the heck does it matter whether there is one or two parents in the household. The ideal all-american father/mother/dog/2.5 child family does not exist in inner-city, urban, mostly-minority homes. The children are dealing with what is left of their so called family and the parents are living with what is left of a broken marriage ... if there was a marriage at all. What you would like to know has nothing to do with the reality these children and parents live with daily.

k9 - you assume these children are all disruptive, don't wanna learn unless 'ma mamma or papa go to de class wit me'. There are behavioral problems in the classroom because they exist in the home. Where do we intervene to fix these problems?? -

"I would like to know how many of these households are single parent where there is no father figure."

--A better question is why aren't cons as concerned about destroying two-parent families by putting millions of auto industry employees out of work as they are when arguing against gay marriage? Suddenly, it's to hell with the American family (that is, if they are perceived to be Democratic party supporters). Interesting how some on the right cherry pick the times when they are soooo concerned with the well-being of innocent children. ;-(

Schools should concentrate on teaching the three "r's", a little geography and civics and science and leave the social engineering alone.

If a kid can't behave in class, the parent either comes and sits with them (and misses work) or the kid stays home. That's one way to get the parents to pay attention and demand of their child that they stop disrupting classes. -

I have said for years that the Dept of Education needs to be abolished

They have presided over the largest decline in the quality of education this country has ever experienced
If they aren't an example of a failed Federal agency, I don't know what is

Well heck fire, They have to dumb it down fer the illegals minorities and some of majorities.Or none of them would pass. Teachers have to fight like a son a gun to the classroom. Kids ain't got no respect fer their teachers or any other adult. Can't use red pencil causes it hurts the kids feelins. Throw over 30 in a classroom teacher ain't got enough time in the day to give any tutorin fer the needy. Its goverment ran what do ya know. And its a cotton pickin union to beat that.

It was a disastrous year for the eighth grade at the south side Bradwell Elementary school in a tough neighborhood with high poverty. More than half the class, 44 of 77 students, did not graduate.

The Principal of the school and the teachers are to blame.-

So if the school's principal and the teachers lowered the standards and the school boasted an 100% graduation rate that would be great?
Reply
I can't speak to the particulars here, but three decades as an AP US History and AP Government & Politics teacher have taught me that today's educators are increasingly likely to graduate students who did not make the standard. I'll take integrity over expedience any day.

Teachers are often like spoiled children. When they get where they want to be, nothing you say or do can get them to move. In this case, you tell them that they need to work harder, or educate THEMSELVES for the benefit of their students. I had a teacher in High School, all he did was play his guitar and let students read newspapers and talk. I love the class at the time, but i realize what a waste is was. He was a literature teacher. Once a teacher has their 7 year tenure, the Unions Protect them in many states. Another reason why parents should have options for their children besides public schools.

As I've said at least twice on Propeller, the solution is:
Reply
1) Vouchers.
2) Vouchers
3) Vouchers
And it certainly wouldn't hurt to ABOLISH the Federal Department of Education. It "educates" no one and is merely a receptacle for political donors and supporters "owed" an over-paid Federal job; a part of the "spoils system". When in the heck are people going to WAKE-UP?! Show one, just ONE, educational improvement in America's schools since this money-wasting department was established.
Give the students and parents a REAL CHOICE --- GIVE THEM VOUCHERS! -

From the original article: 44 Of 77 Students At Bradwell Elementary Did Not Pass Eighth Grade.

The math in the lead-in to this thread did not support a "40% graduation rate," rather closer to a 34% rate. Probably a typo, but it gives liberals a chance to claim that conservatives are distorting the facts. -
