Unless there is a huge reserve somewhere that eighter isn't yet known, or being kept a secret, there isn't any way to drill us out of dependancy from foreign oil, at current usage of fossil fuels. No way. We just do not have those kind of known reserves.
The answer lies in alternative energy away from fossil fuels. Expect these alternative power vehicles in a show room fairly soon. Chevy Volt will be one of them, unless GM ceases to build cars altogether. Tesla in California is allready selling cars, but because of their small size, their impact is at the moment minimal in the market place. There will be alternatives out of both europe and asia soon, as allready mentioned in this thread.
The combustion engine is taking its last bow, and will in a few years start to disapear, amid high gas prices and lack of filing stations.

As I have posted REPEATEDLY, the CURE for this DOES EXIST, and HAS POTENTIALLY LONG EXISTED.

"We" could LONG AGO, by applying VERY OLD technologies --- have eliminated MOST of "our" abject, addictive dependency on other peoples' OIL to brainlessly burn as a mere fuel to power "our" autos!
THAT is the implication of the Electric / I.C.E "Chimera" architecture exemplified by the Chevy VOLT (and also its EUROPEAN counterpart the AMPERE and other entries into the “development derby” soon to come from all the clever folks over in ASIA) which combine cheap and simple ELECTRIC power together with a “fall-back” I.C.E. used in the manner of that in a Diesel-Electric LOCOMOTIVE!
Wise up, people. You have LONG been SWINDLED by "our" past MISguided (or maybe more like MISBEGOTTEN!) MIS"leadership" (of both the “political” and also “corporate” variety!) who FAILED to fulfill their REAL obligations to the membership of this society and others --- which WOULD have been to OPTIMIZE THE CHARACTER AND THE QUALITY OF "OUR" TECHNOLOGY and PRODUCTS rather than to merely MAXIMIZE ”THEIR” MONEY!
