That whole line of thinking expressed in the above piece is symptomatic (and maybe even EMBLEMATIC!) of an apparently very deep-seated deficit in the very contact with reality of a great many people.

The need for energy independence --- and particularly, the most important aspect of that concept, which really is the need to QUIT ADDING to the whole general degree of "bidding pressure" that PUSHES UP the "worth" of oil (thereby DRIVING the price UP, thereby in effect SPONSORING AND BANKROLLING the whole world conflict situation involving the stuff that renders it so "lucrative" as to be worth fighting over) --- is NOT something that should end up being trivialized into some sort of "contest" to be "fought" over between "Democrats" and "Republicans"! Anybody who sees it in SUCH simplistic terms as THAT has ALREADY MISSED THE POINT, and indeed THE BOAT!
