Comments for Schwarzenegger says freeing immigrant inmates would save $180 million »
Posted By Eagle_Eye 6 months, 1 week ago in NewsSACRAMENTO, Calif. - With California slipping into a financial sinkhole, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to save more than $180 million by cutting short the sentences of thousands of immigrants in the state's prisons and turning them over to federal authorities for deportation.
The idea faces certain hurdles — for one thing, commuting some sentences will require court approval — and immigration authorities warn that a mass release of inmates from California and other states could swamp the federal system, which is already at capacity.
But Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Lisa Page said: "Every dollar not spent to house an undocumented immigrant inmate is a dollar that can be spent on health care services and education and other important programs to Californians. These inmates are the federal government's responsibility and California taxpayers shouldn't be paying the bill."

Yeah what an Idea! Let's put the fear of letting criminals out on the street instead of cutting all the bloated programs. That should teach you for voting against an even more bloated state government.

Frinkin politicians have no shame. They would rather set criminals loose on the population than cut the amount of money they have.-

Considering that keeping people locked up is one of the most bloated programs in the US, this would cut a bloated program. The US has the highest per capita prison population in the world! I don't know whether sending illegal immigrant prisoners home is the best way of cutting costs, but reducing the prison population overall definitely deserves a second look. If other countries, including China and Russia, can survive with smaller prison populations, perhaps the US could too. I thought you were a fiscal conservative.-

I don't know about Canada but in the US prisons are there to house criminals. Sure we should do away with the drug wars and stop putting non violent people in jail for 'possession' but turning criminals loose is stupid and dangerous. Now if CA wants to send them back home that is one thing. But since the Feds can't handle them most likely they will open the doors and letting them into the streets.

Sure I did Beast I know how the politics of Immigrants works. Arnie couldn't say "DEPORT" because that would be racist,,,, if he says 'DEPORT' and then doesn't he'll be in trouble. Once Arnie finds out the Feds doen't want anything to do with it he will set them free. Hide and watch.

LOL well how about that, I know you know I don't think it's racists to deport illegals because they are illegal and should be deported and allowed back in IF they go through the proper system. And I know you know I was talking about what the lids would scream if they were deported (which they have done for decades now.

Why doesn't this Governor have Immigration come in and do a sweep of his state, cut all the free programs to the illegals and send all the inmates back. I bet a lot of money would be available once the welfare to illegals is cut off.

Yes, that would save some money, but have you considered why those illegal immigrants are there in the first place, and why nobody seems to be determined to really crack down on them? Because they are cheap labor and without them the fruit an vegetables in California wouldn't be harvested. All the state would need to do to get rid of them is to crack down on the employers who use them. No work --> no illegal immigrant (well perhaps a few).-

Back in the 50,60,70,80, etc., there was this thing called "Migrant Workers" that only came up to do the work seasonally, rotating around the US as crops matured. During the 80's this all changed when they didn't go back to Mexico and started hauling their families across the border and staying. This is where it started going down hill.-

You are right, allowing in migrant workers would solve the problem. We have them in Canada. They come for the summer legally, and then they go home.

What I've seen in the US lately is that the right-wing whips up such a frenzy against illegal immigrants that if any politician even breathes a word about legalizing them in any way, everybody starts to scream "amnesty," and they silence the politician. If I remember correctly it almost finished John McCain's primary campaign when they started to accuse him of supporting amnesty. I suspect that the very same people who do not want to develop a legalized system of dealing with both the illegal immigrants and the need for their labor are the ones who hire them.-

"need for their labor are the ones who hire them.", now that is a very true statement! I know there are people out there desperate for work, any work now and they are keeping it from Americans that need the work. A lot because the illegals can be paid under the table, no benefits, now workers comp, etc....

Gwinnett County, GA, already did this to save money. Pity that the radical left is hell-bent on bringing this nation to its knees. They'll never let California save money by freeing illegals. They won't even let California save 80,000 farming jobs by freeing up water in the San Joaquin valley. Species disappear every year around the world. But here in America, America has to be destroyed before we'll let another worthless guppie species die out.

It's curious that the same state and federal judges who now join state legislatures in supporting aggressive tax measures for their own self-interest cannot see how saving jobs is likewise in their best interests. -

as long as they send their azzes back to mexico,i agree.theres a big gang problem out there and if these lowlifes hit the streets ,the money they save will be nothing compared to the trouble these wetbacks cause.one of californias biggest problems is supporting the illegal population.
